I've got both. Rock Band hands down.
More instruments, can use controllers from either game, and by far more varied and better downloadable content (talking about the Xbox 360 version specifically, compared to GH2 and GH3).

Rock Band...it's entertaining (tried it a few times at a buddy's) but I'd never buy it.

I have both. Received a gifts for Xmas. I like the feel of the guitar better on GH but Rock Band just has more content. I saw somewhere on Engadget that GH is coming out with the drums as well.

the GH3 guitar won't work, nor will the GH2 controller work on PS3.
Get Rock band because drums are FUN.

FWIW when GH4 comes out they are planning on introducing their own drum set, it has 3 pads, 2 cymbals and the bass peddle. I think it will probably be the nail in the coffin for the franchises huge success, while it will remain successful I think fewer people will be interested in getting another drum set and undoubtedly it will come with yet another guitar, how many plastic guitars does an individual need? While I am bias(one of my friends is one of the main designers for GH) I prefer GH for guitar, but rock band is more fun for a group of people. The games are cheap enough that if you like the style of game play you should have both because they are both good.

Doesn't Rock Band require you to have friends?

Did you just wrap towels around the pads or did you glue them down?
I also have both GH3 and RB for the PS3, and I would definately say that RB is better since there are more instruments and there are a ton of downloadable songs, vs GH3 has almost none. I think every week RB releases about 3 songs.
I still do play GH3, but not as much as RB.

I'd actually be willing to dish out an extra $100 for Rock Band if they ever came out with "real" drums.

As much as I hate EA as a whole, I'll have to go with Rock Band. Don't get me wrong GH is fun, but I think Rock Band is more fun. Plus Rock Band doesn't have those stupid gay boss battles.

There are many mods for the drums for rock band.
I did one of the early ones which was to buy adhesive felt and stick them to the tops of your drum pads. Works pretty well.
For various mods, including gum rubber, socks (probably similar to the dish towel), you should check out rockband.com/forums. lots of great stuff there.

There was a huge bruhaha when Harmonix posted that GH3 guitars would not work with rock band. I don't ever remember that being 'settled', although I haven't paid much attention as of late. It was a pretty huge deal when you couldn't buy Rock band guitars standalone (you can now), so people had few options for getting/using a second guitar, especially on PS3.

According to Wikipedia, this is a problem in the PS3 and the Wii.

yeah my GHIII guitar works with RB. However GHIII does not even let you start the game if the Rock Band controller is plugged in.
GHII lets you start the game with the RB controller, but it doesn't work at all during a song.

Go to trailers and watch trailer 2...all about the drums and what to expect. Pretty amazing.
As much as I HATE the idea of having two different drum sets...the GH drum set looks VERY intriguing.

Sarlaac and WdnUlik2no,
What system do you guys have? I have a PS3 and my GH3 guitar does not work with RB and vice versa.
In RB, the game sees the GH3 guitar as a regular controller so it is tied to the microphone part, not guitar or bass.

Harmonix (Maker of Rock Band) released drum pads that minimize the loud "clacking" that happens when you hit the drum. I purchased it and I encourage you guys to buy it. When i drum now it has more of a bouncy feeling to it and it's a NIGHT and DAY difference in terms of the sound when hitting the pads. Gamestop, Best Buy, Walmart...they all should have it for 19.99

How is the online support for Rock Band?
I have GH3 and being able to download new songs keeps me busy. Boyfriend downloaded the Muse setlist for me a few weeks ago and Im hooked all over again.
I played Rock Band at Best Buy and the guitar felt....weird.
I may just wait for GH4.

Rock band.com/dlc
You can compete against people online.
There is this 'tour mode' where you go from larger venue to larger venue which doesn't work online, I assume this will be changed in Rock band 2 however.

Basic gameplay still remains the same with Rock band 2. (i.e. songs from Rock band
work unconverted in rock band 2).

One thing that is kind of nice about Rock band is that the rightmost pad is not always
a cymbal, sometimes it is a drum. But with GHWT (Guitar hero world tour aka GH4), the cymbals are always cymbals.
Activision said they plan on making GHWT compatible with rock band's drums. Not sure how they are going to do that, I guess they are going to merge the two cymbals into one, I guess.
