FYI on DirectX 9.0c
FYI on DirectX 9.0c
Maybe you guys know this already, but I sure didn't.
Like a bazillion other people, I've had DirectX 9.0c installed on my computer for a while. About a month ago a got a new racing sim who's installer launched the usual redistributable install for DX 9.0c. I said "no" to that install and everything was fine.
Late last week the developer released a major update to the sim title which I decided to install last night. The update is substantial and pretty much requires you to do a complete uninstall/reinstall of the game. At the end of the installation for the new sim version, the same redistributable installer for DX 9.0c popped up. I again said "no" to this install.
Like many games, the first thing that runs after the installation of this racing sim is the graphics configuration program. This time, however, it would not run. I got a "red X" error dialog that stated the graphics config program had failed to start because d3dx9_30.dll was not found.
After a bit of forum searching, here's the deal. Microsoft released an update to DirectX 9.0c in April. This update included new dll files that were not present in the previous release of DirectX 9.0c. The developer of my sim wrote their latest version against some of these new dll's. I downloaded and ran the latest DirectX and all was fine.
The thing that really PO's me though is that M$ makes almost zero distinction that the DX 9.0c releases after April are any different than the previous releases. WTF Microsoft, just ____ing release a version 9.0d or even a "9.0c with April update!"
As a matter of fact, DXdiag listed my installed versions of Direct X identically both before and after I ran the latest update ( 9.0c 4.09.0000.0904 ). But low and behold that latest iteration of 9.0c added the stuff I didn't have before.
