DS owns PSP big time

http://ds.ign.com/articles/731/731871p1.html

September 8, 2006 - According to the latest reports from Enterbrain/ Famitsu's official data service, the month of July wasn't a very competitive one in regards to Japanese "PSP vs. DS" software sales. Of the top 50 selling games in that region for the month, nine of them were PSP titles against 23 games for the DS.

Six of the top 10 Japanese sellers were released for Nintendo's Dual-Screen handheld system (in fact, four of the top five), while the highest spot that a PSP game could manage was #16 (Tekken: Dark Resurrection). Also, with the exception of Winning Eleven 10 for the PlayStation 2, the only million-selling games in this top 50 were titles made for the Nintendo DS platform: New Super Mario Bros., Brain Age, Big Brain Academy, Animal Crossing, and Mario Kart DS have exceeded more than a million units sold apiece, with several of them selling more than double that.

Even more interesting is in the hardware numbers -- in the Japanese market, the PlayStation Portable is pretty much neck and neck with Nintendo DS system in units sold: 1.3 million systems sold each. But that's the original Nintendo DS system, the one that is no longer being manufactured or sold in Japan. The DS Lite skyrockets that number into the stratosphere: close to 4 million DS Lite systems have been sold since the formats introduction, which, combined with the original unit, kicks the system numbers through the roof at nearly five DS systems for every one PSP sold.

On the side, according to Japanese sales numbers the Game Boy line is clearly on its way out. While DS and PSP systems are selling in the millions, this year hasn't been as kind to the Game Boy Advance SP and Game Boy Micro: Only 200,000 SP units and 130,000 Game Boy Micro portables have been sold in Japan.

With rumblings of a possible PSP redesign in the works, this battle may get more heated in 2007. But for now the Nintendo DS is the clear handheld dominator in Japan
this get's me wondering what all you sony fanboys will use an excuse to have a PSP and not a DS now that you can't say "I like japanese games, and the PSP is the leading system in japan."

and what if the Wii does that well in japan over the PS3? Let me guess... "The Wii is just a kids console, I wan't hi def graphixxxx!!!!"

although i liked the idea of the PSP when i first bought it, it really didnt work out for me. The games i think they're more oriented for single player and take longer gaming sessions, like you play it and then you're done, where as for the DS they're games you can play over and over and online against random people and can be finished in like a few minutes, the PSP doesnt do that (to my knowledge at least)

and the whole idea of a portable media player, the UMD movies were way over priced. and then the whole process of having to convert media files to play on the PSP is kinda a hassle. Also imo watching movies or tv shows or wahtever on the go, not really worth it unless you got the time to watch the entire program.

and browsing the web, meh it isnt that great. and the text entry doesnt work well.

i think for the PSP to do better, they need multiplayer, something like the xbox live or whatever DS uses to play against other people. and then they also need to make more quick fun games that you can just jump into. games like DS' mario kart & tetris.

browsing the web, they shouldve had it include a bigger internal cache or something, cause alot of the pages i tried to goto wouldnt load cause it ran out of internal memory. and they should have an addon keyboard to attach to it.

although i wonder how the DS and PSP are doing in the states, cause the style of gaming in the US is way different than in japan, look at the sales of xbox and xbox 360 in japan, and then look at how xbox is doing in the states.

Why is it ok to be a Nintendo fanboy, but not a sony/xbox fanboy? You are the biggest basher of Sony I have seen on here, but yet Nintendo hasn;t had shit to show but DS sales for past 2 years. Meh

I love the PSP's screen. Other than that i really have no use for it. The only reason i held on was becuase i loved GTA and cant wait for vice city stories. Other than that, there is nothing else. I got bored of emulating and all that, and just didnt want to bother anymore. As for movies, it's such a pain in the ass to convert shit to play and all that. Ever since i purchased my Pocket PC6700 with evdo, i have no use for the psp. With orb, i have access to all my computer movies and also live tv feeds from any channel on my cable. And if for whatever reason i dont have internet connection, i have a 2 gg card with enough family guy and thundercats to keep me sane.

The DS lite is sweet, but I still love my psp. I honestly think that I would have been happier with the gameplay on the DS but having 20 nes and 20 snes games and plenty of movies and at least 2 decent games is enough for me.

DS is indeed a nice device. That being said, I still love the PSP despite the lack of the "killer" app still. Although, I've been VERY happy with the few I have (i.e. Capcom Classics, Lumines, Virtua Tennis, and LocoRoco). When MGS and Gran Turismo arrive, I believe I'll be even more pleased.

What's more, the device has been great on trips for me. The ability to listen to music, watch movies on UMD or memory stick, as well as gaming on a long plane/Greyhound ride is the big plus for me...

What everyone needs to remember is that this is Sony's first attempt in the handheld market, whereas Nintendo has been in the game since the 80's with the first Gameboy. This upcoming year alone, the PSP will be seeing some of the best games that the DS will not even come close to having. Nintendo has not had one single ultra-hyped up game for years, besides the new Zelda, but that has been in the works for years now. There hasn't been any anticipation (before the announcement of the Wii mind you) for a game on either Gamecube or DS that has come close to, lets say, GTA series or MGS series on the PS or Halo on the Xbox.

I know the Wii is supposed to be going a different route with its games, but since I am not into the whole Mario/Zelda/Metroid franchises anymore, I dont think the Wii is for me. I'm sure it will be good and fun when it arrives, but I don't see any hype being generated for any single game as there is for the system itself.

I don't think it's ok to be a fanboy of any particular company.

I like xbox and 360 games, I like Gamecube and DS games. The only game I actually enjoyed on PSP was liberty city stories, and that's not even exclusive to PSP anymore. MGS is pretty cool, but I can play that on xbox or gamecube, so again, not a reason to buy a ps2. As for Gran Turismo, I never could stand having to go through 4000 menu's just to get to a race. I prefer forza over Gran Turismo. The only reason I can see for buying a PS2 is the large amount of RPG's on there, and I don't like turn based RPG's anyways.

Oh come on, of course I'll bash sony fanboys. They are so adament about buying any sony gaming device regardles of price. Who the hell prices a console at $600? A $200 handheld that as of yet only has mediocre games and overpriced movies? No thanks. Yet the sony fanboys are all over this drooling all over the place because it's sony.

I'm not a fanboy of any particular company, and until sony offers up some gameplay that I can really look forward to, then I won't give a shit about them.

Sure. It's expensive...I'll take that.

But, at the end of the day, who cares? You have video cards that are $$$$ and no one whines and starts religious wars/jihad/bishslapfights on boards about it...?

You, not a fanboy? You are the first to tout Nintendo and bash everyone else. Its very easy to see where you stand as far as that, which is why I don't understand you and the way you talk about 'other' fanboys.

You say DS 'owned' the PSP in sales, of course it did: Its been out longer, its cheaper, and is more geared towards Japanese-style games, and we all know that the DS is selling like mad in Japan. The PSP is not what alot of people expected, granted, but its in no way a lost cause. 4th quarter '06 and next quarter '07 are looking pretty good to me.

As has been said a bazillion times in here, buy what you want. If Wii was $400 instead of $250, I am 100% sure you would still buy one, because you like Nintendo. Trust me, I am not THAT excited to pay $600 for a PS3, which is why I will wait a while to get one, but I can at least believe that if they bring out anything like what they had for PS2, its gonna do very well in the market, regardless of price.

The reason us 'fanboys' are drooling is because as of yet, 360 has done nada to wow us, or me anyways. I have seen nothing stellar on that system. Hell, PS2 is still churning out hot games, which is why I am in no rush to get a PS3. I do know that the Wii, Xbox whatevercomesafter360 are not on top of my list.

Its going to be a very interesting holiday season in the world of gaming. 2 months to go.

If the Wii in it's current form cost $400 I would say fuck that , and get a 360 instead. If the PS3 really does WOW me and the price goes down I'll buy it.

Sure I bashed the 360 becuase of it's hardware failure issues, but I still commended it for it's graphics. If the Wii has hardware problems I'll bitch about those too. Just becuaseI like the Wii the most so far doens't make me a fanboy. that's just my oppinion.

Just like it's my oppinion that hte PS3 is expensive as all fuck, and it's got all kinds of shit on it that I woudl probably never use. It has good graphics, but still... no force feedback? Tilt funcionality in the controller similar to the Wii? $600? everything about the PS3 makes me laugh except the graphics, but I can get equivalent stuff on the 360.

I don't think Nintendo needs to hype their games to sell well. Look at the numbers, Brain Age sold well and many other ds games. And if you are talking about a hype how about Final Fantasy III. Anyways, I chose the DS over the psp becuase of price and games. I mainly see ports of ps2 games and I hate load times on a portable system. I take my DS everywhere I go becuase I have a flash cart which allows me to watch movies and listening to mp3's and play nes, gba, or ds games. The games on the ds allows you to pick up and play on the go, no fuss. Man this is already starting to become a handheld console war...

Well ghost, I have 4 PSP games so far, and they are all PSP exclusives.

Gradius Portable
Bomberman Portable
Initial D Street Stage
G-Generation Portable

I am not a fanboy of any consoles, if Konami decided to put the Gradius series on DS, Wii or XB360. I will grab'em all in a heartbeat.

I think I may be the only person who doesn't mind converting video for the psp. I have a 2 click converter and I am going to have to convert it anyway since whenever I download tv shows it is like ~600 megs for an hours worth. It is a lot easier to find a good converter for the psp than for the ipod (if anyone has one let me know). I just set 3 to convert and come back in the morning.

I dont think the psp is overpriced either. I carry one little device for a week long trip home and dont carry anything else. I have Syphon Filter, 3 episodes of Top Gear and 10 classic nintendo games all contained within the psp.

what do you use to conver the video? PSP video 9?

Do you know of a quick way to get DVD to psp?

if so, how do you deal with converting the DVD to a widescreen res?
