Does PS3 play PS2 games?
Just as the title states, I am just wondering if the PS3 plays PS2 games. I am not much of a gamer but thought about picking up a PS3 as it is supposed to be a pretty powerful piece of equipment. I've read that the new slim PS3 does not play PS2 games but couldn't find anything about the older, larger PS3.

the original 20 and 60 gigs from late 2006 are backwards compatible. the next gen 60 an 80 gigs are only compatible on some games. if you want to play ps2 games then buy a ps2 instead of a used 3 year old ps3.

I was planning on buying my son a PS3 for Christmas because I was under the assumption that Madden 10 only came out on PS3. I realize now I was wrong about that. Are they done making PS2 games? Should I go ahead and buy the PS3 since the new games will only come out on that console? Are the graphics that much better on PS3 than PS2's? The wireless controllers is almost enough for me to buy it. WHat would you guys do - keep my PS2 and buy Madden 10 for it - or get the PS3 and start the collection with Madden 10 for it? thanks

The difference in graphics is like night and day. Of course, you need an HDTV to make the most of the upgraded graphics, but even if you don't it will look a lot better than PS2. Not to mention the other things you can do on PS3 (Blu-ray, etc.).
However, if you do decide to stay with PS2, Logitech makes great wireless controllers for it. They should be pretty cheap on eBay since they are old. They come in black and in white.

Be careful if you got the older models. The 20GB has no built in WIFI. The 60GB could run loud and might be more susceptible to the YLOD (yellow light of death) since it runs hotter with its older chipset.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there have been internal documents @ sony that have been leaked revealing plans (and ongoing work) to develop a software emulator for the PS2 that will run on PS3 hardware with no need for a PS2 chip (like the original PS3's had). I would expect that this software emulator will be released sometime within the next year, without a doubt. Also, the document leaked information about a DREAMCAST emulator in the works with Sega and that Sony could potentially have exclusive rights to the Dreamcast library!!!!

I think they're going the $$$ route and selling PS2 games via the PSN. Tons of rumors on that as well. That rumor of software only emulation (which is very difficult and not reliable) has been around for years.

+1 for Sony selling PS2 games on PSN
The PS3 has the hardware to play the damn games, Sony has been/is too cheap to properly implement it without emulation to this point.
Oh and don't get me started on lack of modern Flash capabilities in the browser

well heres the problem with PS2 games on PS3.....MONEY.
Sony can charge you 5-8-10 bucks per game, from their PSN store....making tons of cash for very little work...tweaking software on an as-needed basis to run on the PS3. If they flat out release an emulator for PS2 games, sure, thats fantastic for us as consumers but it gives Sony NOTHING so they really have no incentive to be rushing into that or development of it. They will have absolutely no return on investment with a PS2 emulator. No one is going to go "oh ok NOW im going to buy a PS3" Those who really really care about PS2 games on PS3 either already have an older model with it integrated or have a working PS2. There is no increased market sitting out there waiting to buy a PS3 and holding out for PS2 emulation.
Would it be an excellent feature to integrate? HELL yes....but again, thees no incentive for them to rush it out...or do it at all for that matter...time will tell.
