i think my ps3 is dead, i copied over some xvid movies, with my ps3 attached to my monitor. turned it off and moved it over to the plasma TV in the living room. tried turning it on but it beeps 3 times and then has a flashing red light.
i dunno what to do, this is the launch console and my warranty is expired

This is not possible!
I hate saying it but, is everything connected properly? Try shutting the power off with the switch behind the console. What sort of site did you download these videos from anyhow? hehe

So its working now?
I'd turn it off using the back switch. Let it sit for a minute and turn it back on
I recently got Oblivion for the PS3 and it ended up crashing during a huge battle and doing the same thing.

well this is exactly what i did.
I had my PS3 hooked up to my computer monitor via HDMI cable, and audio via optical output to my logitech Z680's.
what i did was, flip the switch in the back, unhook all that, bring it over to the plasma TV in the living room and hooked it up with the component cables that were already hooked up to that TV.
when i flipped the switch in the back of the PS3, the red light would turn on for a split second give me 3 beeps and then flash the red standby light.
anyways its been 2 hours since i tried powering it on, hopefully it works now

If you change the output or unplug it, it defaults to factory settings for video. You need to hold the power button down when you turn it on until it beeps a few times. I think it's like 5 seconds or something. That will make it output through all of the available ports, and then you can set the output again.

when i flip the main switch in the back, it normally goes to the red standby light. but for me it goes to the red standby light, then a split second later it beeps at me 3 times and then the red standby light just flashes.
all the other videos i have seen on youtube, people have the red standby light come on after flipping the main switch in the back, and then after pressing the power button in the front only then does it give the 3 beeps and then flashing red light. Mine doesnt even do that.

since i wont be living in this address that much longer i am going to hold off.
After some googling. Try taking the hard drive out and blow out the contacts, put it back in making sure its snug and then try to turn it on...
I dont have a PS3 so I do not know how easy it is to do this.
And this
"
If you have Assassin's Creed in (along with autoplay discs on) without an active Internet connection, this may be the reason. I know this isn't with all cases, but it was with a friend of mine. The game kept trying to look for the update.
Three beeps should be something you hear normally when shutting down the PS3. Just make sure the PS3 is in standby mode (red light) before you EVER decide to flip the on/off switch in the back off.
If all else fails, have you ever had the PS3 connected to an HDTV, or changed the settings to HDTV settings, and then switched to SD, or vice-versa? If so, "...you may find you have a blank screen. Simply reset your PLAYSTATION 3 to restore the default SD setting in the following way: turn off the PLAYSTATION 3 system then press and hold the power button for approximately 5 seconds until you hear a beep."
If pressing the PS button doesn't turn the console on, it should if it's connected with a USB cable. The bluetooth may have been wonky at the time that your PS3 was last shut off.

^ If its not even turning on, I think it might be an issue with the hard drive connection. I would start with the hard drive, and making sure its secure. IF thats not it, I'd assume maybe the harddrive is dying.
I've heard horror stories of the hard drives dying out in these things from less than 10 hours played time.
I pray to god mine doesn't go out.

as you see mine goes directly to the flashing red light after flipping the switch on the power supply, every video i have seen goes to a solid red light and then when they press the power button goes green to yellow to flashing red etc etc.

Wow. WTH. Do you have a repair program from the store where you bought it? Maybe it's still worth sending in to Sony to get fixed.
Btw, are there any recalls(if there are any) for PS3 models that this may fall under?

i did buy the extended warranty from walmart, and it is still valid, but it just means they will switch it with a 40gb which i do not want because it does not have backwards compatibility.
and i think a repair from sony would cost 150 bux, so i could get the replacement pS3 from walmart and use that saved money to buy a PS2, but i doubt i would use the PS2 that much, and would rather have a ps3 that could play it should i want to.

the solution of the problem is very hard to find, the error is common with installing other OS, there are a few simple steps.
1st turn main power off at least 15 seconds
2nd press the start button, hold till it beeps twice
3rd it must beep twice
this will rest the system back to the default setting you will have to reload any themes but all other information will be there like saved games etc.
