360, PS3: Need for Speed - The Run
If it's like the last 3 installments of Need for Speed, we'll have a winner. ESPECIALLY with Criterion and Dice at the reigns. Finally a Gumball style game..im very curious to see how it turns out.
Following yesterday's teaser reveal of Need for Speed: The Run, EA has today spelled out some details we didn't know and confirmed some that we inferred from the trailer. First and foremost, the game is indeed speeding toward a holiday release date of November 15, 2011 in North America (and Nov. 17 in Europe). EA Black Box is at the wheel (as rumored), with EA DICE's Frostbite 2 engine under the hood.
Additionally, The Run will feature the much-loved Autolog feature (as loved in Hot Pursuit and Shift 2), as well as the "hot cars and crazy-fast chases" we've come to expect from the NFS series. As seen in the trailer, the game will follow racers cross-country (Cannonball Run-style) from San Francisco to New York, with plenty of stops in between. EA's announcement also notes that "entering the race is just the beginning," with races taking place in "dense urban traffic," on "icy mountain passes" and "narrow canyons." Presumably we'll find out more about The Run as E3 approaches, this June.

"Cannonball Run style"...need I say more.

The demo came out today.
This game had SO much potential. They could have made it just like the newest Hot Pursuit...handling and everything...just an acrade/fun racer that looks amazing but with the story line of the Gumball.
Don't even bother. The framerate is, from what I guess, about 25. The graphics are no where near that of Hot Pursuit, the damn camera gets super close to the car in the turns and when you slow down...its just bad.
Sucks.

Hot Pursuit is the perfect arcade racer...and is the most beautiful racing game out there, IMO. Its missing some polish from the FM/GT series, but its environments/rain&snow effects/ambient sounds/details are second to none.
& hate to say it, but Shift is still my #1. Its simply the most entertaining racing game I think I've ever played, and looks good doing it. The amount of small details in the game are ridiculous. I think if more people got past the learning curve and stopped trying to compare it to something its not trying to be, it would be amazing. I've actually been playing it over FM4 lately. Its hard to go to FM4 after playing Shift 2 for 10 minutes.
They really had a prime oppurtunity to expand upon Hot Pursuit, and they genuinely failed. I really wanted this to be good, its something new we havent seen before.

I absolutely loved Hot Pursuit. For me, it was so much more enjoyable than GT5. It was a throwback to the glory days of arcade style NFS. I had high hopes for The Run, looks like I'll be spending more time with MW3.

I was dissappointed in undercover, hot pursuit, and shift 2.
What are the chances the run is going to dissappoint me too?
The classic nfs's were awesome, what happened to this series?
Everything in these new nfs games seem too repetitive and boring...
How does the Azine community like this game? Anyone have it yet?
Should I wait for the bargan bin? I think so... lol

Shift 2 was the same as the first to me with similar maps / different cars. Not worth the $ definitely

Bought it
Finished it 4 hours later.
Several MAJOR gripes.
1) You can only race in career mode with Tier 4 cars, except for the last 5 or so races. That amounts to less than 10 cars FOR THE ENTIRE RACE ACROSS THE COUNTRY). ALL of the other cars are only available in challenge mode or multiplayer. You start with Tier 4, you end with 3 of the Tier 5 cars...2 if you don't have the limited edition. Really, really dumb. Really dumb.
2) The way the cars reset is...well, it will make you cuss. Sometimes drop a wheel off the pavement and you'll reset, other times drive about 100 ft off and it will reset. It seems to reset at the most ridiculous moments. It is entirely inconsistent and gets you at the worst moments.
3) Rubber banding. Oh dear. Fully accelerating Zonda under full boost, being passed like its standing still from a Taurus cruiser.
4) All of the career is somewhat believable until you reach the end. New Jersey has pretty much the identical layout scenery as Denver. You'll see the same factories and turns, etc. In New York, the subways go 200mph +. Minor details, but further decrease the realism.
5) The views. Chase car view is revolting. Its just terrible. All over the place, I never really got used to it.
6) FINISHED IT IN ONE SITTING. My final time, according to the game, actual race time is about 2hrs and 15 minutes. Cut scenes and replays added, maybe 3 and a half.
7) The "mario-kart" style hitting opponents and cops. When you get close to the person you are trying to hit, its almost like a magnet takes over and rams either you or them. Half the time you'll be reset. Pretty lame.
8) No free roam. I knew it wasnt going to be here, but still...a game like this needs it.
The good.
Scenery is excellent in most parts of the US. May not be accurate, but its good to look at. In challenge mode you get different weather and times of day within the different courses which was a bonus. My second home is in around the Million Dollar Highway in Ouray, Colorado...been there several times, and the scenery is somewhat accurate. Liked seeing familiar road signs. One of the reasons I bought the game actually.
Sounds are good. Typical NFS story.
I actually didnt mind the cut scenes. They are few and far between.
Verdict
Rent - Not worth $60.
The challenge mode is the games strong point, not the story mode...which is ridiculous. Black Box should stick to Battlefield. There are so many details missing its laughable. The cars are the worst looking part of the game, and this being a game centered around the cars themselves, that's probably not a good thing. I have a hard time passing up games in which I can drive my own car, and or travel some place that I've been before.

Thanks for the review. I bought it for $29.99 along with Uncharted 3 (same price) at Best Buy on Black Friday. I finished MW3 campaign this past weekend and have completed 9 out of 22 stages on Uncharted 3. I hope I'm not too disappointed with The Run but what can I say after going from Arkham City to Battlefield 3 to MW3 to Uncharted 3. Maybe I'll finish it now before Uncharted 3 so I can max the trade-in value at Gamestop.
Is it worth keeping for the split-screen co-op mode (assuming there is one I didn't check the back of the box)?

I haven't checked out split screen, but the Challenge mode alone, for the 30 minutes I played it was far more redeeming than the actual story mode.
The use of all the cars, plus different times of day and no bizarre story made it seem like I was playing NFS from 1993. Can't really go wrong with point to point racing in beautiful scenery with cool cars.

I still think Hot Pursuit is still the best NFS game to date since Hot Pursuit on the PS2. Ive beaten it long ago, but I still pop it in from time to time just for the sounds & nostalgia.
Best need for speed ever was most wanted, I played a demo on the pc and the game is capped at 30 fps so that makes my moster gaming rig useless basically, I'll just go back to most wanted.
