360, PS3: Bayonetta

Anyone else play the demo yet? Game seems pretty cool, but IMO it's maybe a bit too much like Devil May Cry (afaik it's directed by the same guy who directed DMC) Apparently the game has been getting perfect reviews so far in Japan. I'll definitely look into getting it. Anyone else?

Already paid for the pre-order a while back and waiting to pick it up.

I'm usually a PS3 fanboy, but after reading the reviews about the PS3 version of this I opted for the 360 version.

Its a shame that Sega didn't take the time to do a decent port of this game to the PS3.

This should keep me busy until FFXIII due out in march 2010

Yeah I heard the PS3 game has some framerate issues and all.... I'm still getting the PS3 version because I don't have a 360 Also, I read that Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 had issues with the framerate, screen tearing, etc. However I never once came across any of that when I played the game... So I'll have to wait and see.

It's a shame there's all these PS3 ports that apparently have these issues. I mean, graphically they're both on par, right? IMO it's probably just the developers who are just being too lazy to really do it right.

So I just got my copy. It seems like a pretty cool game so far...

....

but I hope this doesn't turn out like MGS4 and be a game you watch more often than you actually play. Quite a lot of movie sequences in the first bit.

^^ Did you play the demo before you actually bought the game? Maybe its just me, but I thought the demo on XBL was very unpolished. It just didn't look good to me on the screen.

It's getting killer reviews everywhere and it looks pretty good, I just wasn't impressed with the demo to buy it.

I actually played the PS3 demo, since I don't have a 360. I think the graphics look damn nice on the PS3, and everyone says all the supposed graphical issues on the PS3 issues (I haven't seen any yet) aren't on the 360 version, so that'd be a plus if you own the 360. IMO the graphics are great. The very beginning scene (you fighting angels while the backstory is being told) was some real eye candy

Well I personally haven't really played Devil May Cry... or any of the sequels. I've only played the demo for DMC4... and yeah, the gameplay seems pretty similar. I doubt it's as identical to the DMC series as everyone else says, but either way I guess it depends on how much you'd want to play a game that shares a lot of the same mechanics. Gamespot says:
Bayonetta isn't so much a sister to other combat-oriented action games as it is an evolution of them.
Either way I'll keep posting as I keep playing

I just started playing this last night.
It's fun and really over the top. If you don't mind the cheesiness or gratuitous crotch shots, the combat is really fun and deep.

It's like a more fast paced version of God of War I would say.

If you like a slower paced, more zelda-like game, but with awesome combat, play Darksiders.

I would say its more Devil May Cry than God of War... but it does have similar elements to GoW.

Its a good game; probably best beat em up action game I've played since Ninja Gaiden came out for Xbox.

As for the crotch shots... its typical Japanese fan service. I mean one of the unlockable costumes is a Japanese PE Uniform... come on..

I'm debating on Darksiders though. Looks good, but I figure I'll probably be busy with Bayonetta and raiding in WoW until FFXIII in March.

Ironically.. I complained of a bad port of Bayonetta to PS3... it seems to be the reverse for Darksiders. Darksiders on 360 seems to suffer from terrible screen tearing.

Glad I own both consoles for this purpose.

How difficult is the game and is it pretty time intensive? I'm major ADD so I can't stand games with huge open environments such as GTA or Hitman. I don't have too much free time so directed games are a must ala Dead Space. Playing NFS Shift this past week and I'm already growing bored with it.

Yeah in your case I'd say maybe stay away from it.

and yeah as far as bad ports, that's almost always the fault of the developer. It's usually just laziness or rushing the game to meet the publisher's deadline. There's really no reason why a game would run smooth on the 360 and not the PS3, and vice versa.

I personally think the game on normal mode is not difficult at all. And for the most part the game doesn't have huge open environments; the Verses (sections of each chapter) are very linear forcing you to go one direction before running into a barrier that will clear once you defeat all enemies.

Also the game auto saves after each Verse, so if you need to take off in the middle of a Verse, the game will autoload at the last Verse checkpoint so that you don't need to start from the beginning of the Chapter.

I finished normal mode in about 10 hours or so; but thats with watching all cutscenes. I was expecting Ninja Gaiden difficulty, but it is no where near as hard (or cheap) as Ninja Gaiden on Normal.

Be warned.. Hard mode is freaking Hard. Where you can get away without using Witch Time in normal mode, in Hard Mode its impossible to get through certain mobs and bosses without Witch Time.

You will need to play through hard mode and the insane mode in order to unlock everything.. or you can grind for Halos (currency) and use unlock codes.

I think experiencing the story and game play once is worth it.

^ For the most part its pretty good.

The voice actor for Bayonetta is extremely good. The others.. can be a bit hammy, like Luka and Baldor etc. Jeanne's voice actor is pretty good for the most part as well.

Edit: Also fwiw... there is no Japanese dialogue at all for this game. Even the JP version had english voices with JP subtitles. Kind of a strange choice by Platinum; JP voice actors tend to do a much better job than English voice actors.

^ Ah, thanks.

Is there a toggle where you can have the dialogue in Japanese with English captioning...?

Thnx. I usually start on Easy so I'm budgeting 15 hours for my campaign. Are the cutscenes super long like MGS4? Some interesting choices out there, this game, Darksiders, Army of Two #2. Sheeit I haven't even played Uncharted 2 or Borderlands yet

Some cutscenes are long like 7-8 minutes... but not MGS4 long. Christ... I remember for some of the MGS4 cutscenes I'd have to grab a soda and some Not like I minded since I'm a huge MGS fan.

Thing about Bayonetta is how seamlessly cutscenes can flow in and out of actual gameplay. If you have a PS3 download the free demo first and try it out. After the boss demo on the broken bridge, I knew I was going to get the game.

I also want to try Darksiders, but debating on if I'll grind out all the extras on Bayonetta or move onto Darksiders.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bayonetta is a contender for GOTY for 2010. I don't expect it to win since there are some great games on the horizon: FFXIII, Mass Effect 2 to name a couple.

I just finished Chapter 4 (? Where you fight Fortitudo in the Coliseum) and the graphics in that whole scene were crazy..... and I didn't notice any slowdown or anything.

I'm sure there are some places in the game with drops in framerate, but you kind of have to watch out for them. They said there were framerate issues in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, but I honestly never saw them.

btw you finished normal mode in 10 hours? I'm getting my ass handed to me on normal! I'm usually pretty good at these games (well, Ninja Gaiden specifically)

^ Yeah. You really have to master the dodge and Witch Time activation.

On normal mode its not that hard because you can hear a slow high pitched sound (a sound effect like knife cutting through air) whenever a mob attacks and right before the sound speeds up at the end hitting dodge should activate Witch Time 95% of the time assuming you're close enough to the mob attacking.

Also, I spent most of my halos on increasing my magic bar so I can stock up a ton of magic and then just spam Torture Attacks.

In Hardmode... the mobs move and attack faster and the window of dodging is a lot shorter... it's really freaking hard and frustrating.

Try using the Duraga Claws or the Katana; I find those are easier for me to rack up combo points.

On my first playthrough, I didn't get any new weaposn other than the Onyx Roses, Duraga Claws and the Katana.

I'm playing a 2nd time through to get the ice skates...

Yeah the thing with dodging is that I dodge right before he attacks the first time, but then when I get back up, he quick swings another attack at you, not giving you enough time to dodge again... I'm mostly getting this when I have to fight those two kinds of Fire & Ice creature things.

Yay, they're releasing a patch!

http://platinumgames.com/2010/01/28/...playstation-3/

SEGA Europe and SEGA America can today announce that an online update will be available on Jan 28th for the PlayStation 3 version of BAYONETTA. This online update allows the game to be installed onto the console’s hard drive which significantly decreases the loading times for the game.
Some people in the comments say it boosts the graphical issues a bit, too (which I still have yet to actually see..)

Been playing this for the last few weeks...love it! Beat it on normal, knocked out most of the remaining trophies, and now I'm playing it on hard. Should just have two or three trophies to get after that to snag a platinum. The hard difficulty's not much harder, either. In fact, a lot of fights are easier because it's just one or two bigger angels versus five or six smaller ones. That said, even on normal, some of the alfheim's are insane.

I also think I should've picked up the third piece of a record on normal as I have yet to get any more record pieces on hard. Only know of one tomb I didn't open, though. I'll check it out this time through (didn't feel like replaying that level to check it). And the jerks put a crow in an alfheim where you can't get it unless you beat the alfheim...very annoying.

^No kidding. I bought Bayonetta and Soul Calibur IV at the same time...I've played SC4 once . Thankfully, I'm kind of out of the loop with regards to new games coming out; I can sleep easily since I don't know what I'm missing .

I stopped playing Bayonetta and I'm on Chapter 13 or 14... can't remember. Sad part is that I tried playing it again recently and I get manhandled every which way, so if I want to beat the game I might have to start over.

^LOL, very true. But, with the exception of a couple of titles I buy day one, I wait until games are $20 - $30 before I get them, so I'm always behind the curve. And it is a rather short game; I beat it the first time in about a week only playing after work. My time with it has been very sporadic since, but I'll knock the rest out eventually.
