I love the current M5. The front end of the new one is too busy. They need to build the body panels out of lexan so you can see the beauty within. That engine/drivetrain is too pretty to be hidden.

The styling of the new BMW’s is definitely growing on me.
But the expected decision of “SMG only” for the Tranny will keep me from ever putting a new “M” in my garage.
I hope there’s a big backlash of current owners to get them to rethink that decision.
The future M3 with 400HP V8 is definitely tempting, but not if it doesn’t come with THREE PEDALS on the floor !!!

Wow... that's one sweetly designed power package.
V10, 5L, 507 bhp with a red line of 8,250 rpm delivering power to the wheels via a seven-speed SMG gearbox. I sure hope they will offer it up in a fully 7MT.

yes, very impressive, however.....
someone suggested in an earlier thread (comparing the cost new of the cls to a comparible bmw 330) that the bmw line of cars were overpriced as new but held their value in the used market. i submit that the legions of american 3 series bmw buyers are seriously overpaying (thru inflated new car prices)and are in fact bearing the burden of their bmw's F1 race program and for the development of bmw flagship designs such as this latest M5 and the reintroduction of the 6 series last year ( F1 race team alone budgets $500 -$800 million US annually) not to mention factory supported teams in many other classes of sanction racing
one of the benefits of the race program are the amazing debues such as the latest M5 drivetrain components. also to an extent the F1 technology eventually trickles down to 3 series units as well. the issue in my mind is the cost benefit.
assuming for example that $5000 of excess profit from each new 3 series vehicle sold is used for these programs, one could say , in effect these new car buyers inadvertently became "blind" sponsers of the racing program while only a wealthy few M5 owners , factory sponsered teams, club racers and the like actually reap the benefit.
honda, on the other hand while also heavily involved in racing (F1 and other series) apply a substantially smaller portion of per unit excess profit towards subsidizing their race program efforts. again, some of the technology eventually trickles down to those buyers.
so, my take on this particular M5 debue is... i will continue to be an informed consumer of honda products as i believe they have rewarded me with much more "bang for my buck" and smuggly grin as each bmw owner passes in ignorant bliss , knowing my bank account is fatter while they diligently fill the trough of the chosen bmw "fat cats"
this rant could equally apply to other marques (ferrarri, jaguar come to mind)

haha
why are you comparing Honda/Acura with the new m5 or BMW... honestly i dont own a bmw and i had an acura. THere is day/night difference between CLS and 330 in term of reliability, handling, built quality. Straight line speed is similar but if that is what u look for in cars then you should go buy a Mustang/camaro.
and your are talking about bang for the buck. for those of people who can afford the new m5, which is 100k+. Do you think they care about bang for the buck? they are buying the car as a status. BMW is a little over priced but that is how it is. a freaking ferrieri cost over 200k and it doesnt even have auto windows... is that over priced? it is because they are all over priced that is why you turn your head when you see them on the street because they are RARE. if you see as many modena 360 as civics, then that means the car is not over priced.

engine is nuts... I agree a 7, hell even 6-speed manual would be nice. Not like I'll be buying one anytime soon. I think it'll sound nice, not like a milk truck type of sound (lol) but a more refined racecar-like sound. I guess we shall see.

Burn some dust here
That car looks so damn good but its not worth $100,000.
If that really is how much it costs I'd like to know how they justify $40,000 over the standard 545i???

The main competitors to this car are:
E55 $82,000
S Type R $58,995
And if they still made the RS6, then it would be in there with them as well.
The 2003 M5 started at $71,000. If they really feel that the new one is so good that they can charge $30,000 more for it and almost $20,000 more than there nearest "competitor", without offering the owner the option to row his own boat, then good luck BMW.
