this gem. Porsche Cayman S.
Porsche has released the first official photos of the all-new Cayman S sports coupe.
The Cayman S will be powered by a 295-bhp 3.4-liter flat-6 engine that features the same VarioCam Plus variable valve timing system as the new 911 Carrera. The 6-speed manual from the Boxster S, reworked for shorter throws, is standard, with a 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic as an option. Other standard items include dual exhaust and 18-in. wheels.
According to Porsche, the Cayman S will travel from 0-62 mph in 5.4 seconds with the manual and achieve a top speed of 171 mph.
Thanks to new hatchback configuration, rear storage is double that of the Boxster’s rear boot.
The 2006 Porsche Cayman S will be base priced at $58,900, excluding destination fees, and should arrive in U.S. dealerships in January 2006.

I am a little let down by nearly 300hp and a 0-60 of only 5.4, while that is just a number and arguably not a very important one- its still something to think about. That being said I would take the Porsche, no matter how hard GM tries, they still can't do an interior right or make a car that holds up well over time.

At $59K base, how much will that thing go out the door for with the usual additions? $90K? $100K? Now we're in the realm of a different car market.
I like the new Cayman, but really have my Porsche eye on the 911 market over the 'lesser' Porsches.

I don't know. One seems like a track car, and the other one is like a track car that's also very fast in the straight line.
But then again, would you rather have a Porsche or a Chevy? If I REALLY had to pick one, it would probably be the Porsche. But the Vette is a really nice car too and great value.

Vette... I like the look of the new Cayman well over the current Boxster, but I would have to take the Vette for the proven performance. The Cayman looks too much like a 911 and may not even outperform a new Mustang.

Base $59k and 295hp!! Get the fuck out of here, Vette all day long.
Not to mention, I think the Vette looks great. The Cayman has some extremely strange styling aspects to it.......I'm obviously not the only one who thinks so.
You add a few options to that Cayman S and you're going to $65k easy.

Porsche....can't beat RWD, rear mount engine setup, it's lighter as well. Porsche is a Porsche is a Porsche. If i want a trq monster....i can buy a rustang or whatever else is available for much less. In th end I believe the porsche setup would be more fun on a day to day basis and on the track(left and right turns)......and i can't stand the way the cayman looks. Not going to get into the best bang for the buck line of thinking. Neither of these cars is a reasonable and value should be thrown out the window when talking about 2 seater sports coupes.

I'm a big foreign car fan and love Porsches but in this case C6 HANDS DOWN!!! GM does little right but the C6 is homerun in my book.
Cayman drivers will be looking at C6 tailights all day long.
The only current Porsche that I like is the 911 anything other is just not a Porsche. (NOTE: Carerra GT is somewhat sweet but I cant help but think of it as a Boxster on some serious roids.)

cayman isn't slow. If you are looking at 1/4 then fine but using the value logic gives you an overpriced vette that could be stomped on by other cheaper cars.

I don't know . . . I pulled up next to a new black C6 the other day and it was hawt looking. I told the owner (60+ y.o.) "that is one hot looking car buddy." He said the same about mine. I think I'd go w/ the Vette, esp. a 'vert.

Cayman S
Pros - Unbelievable handling; pretty fast; its a Porsche; not many people will have them.
Cons - Unreliable; like all Porsches, won't hold value well; over $70,000 to equip to same level as Vette.
Vette
Pros - Decent interior; more reliable than Porsche; with Z51 package, handling should be equal, if not better, to the Cayman; $20,000 less.
Cons - Cheap materials; not as exclusive as the Porsche; without Z51, handling suffers greatly.
I really like the Cayman S, but even if it was on equal $$$ footing, I would still take the Vette.

I would take the C6 over this without even thinking. I know it's a Porsche and I'm a fan but - the Cayman just looks WEIRD. And not, like, good weird (like an M Coupe) - a bad weird. I wouldn't wanna be caught driving this thing. I'd have to be like umm... it's a loaner, my Carrera GT is in the shop... yeaaaahhhh....

I'll Take a C6, put some long tubes, heads, cam, cat back, intake, a tune, some rims and tires and still have plenty of money leftover from the 20 grand i just saved. My brother priced one out mildly optioned and it with power seats, leather, navigatio and it came to about 65k before taxes and fees. Worse part is you cant get individual options, everything has a host of crap attached to it. And i mentioned the vette in front of the porsche guy and he started ranting and raving about the C6 not having the soul of a boxter or a cayman. I started laughing.

but you bring up an intriguing question... would you take, an OLDER Porsche, over the C6... something like say, a 993 Turbo... hmm...

Dude my favorite Porsche air the old-school aircooled ones; nothing comes close to the 964 chassis in turbo format! But back to the original question; I'll take the Porsche. It's far more refined than a standard C6. Oh btw; power isn't everything!

why.....lol, it's the truth. They each have their own characterstics. Depends on what you value. Just like nobody would laugh at somebody for saying that the Vette has soul that the Cayman doesn't.

damn, lots of Porsche supporters. Money was not a factor since both are relatively similarly priced... above $60k, all things said and done.
I have to admit the C6 interior looks like umm.... not good. Reminds me of a GMC truck. Not good.
