Would you be interested in a car from Apple or Google?

I was just reading an interview with a Ford rep regarding Apple and Google cars. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-36126591 I love the comfortable seats in my Acura and the reliability (had the transmission recalled and it has been great ever since).

My main reason for wanting to replace my car is the antiquated GPS. If the Acura/Alpine GPS had been keeping pace with cell phones it would be as simple as pressing a button once on the steering wheel, quickly giving the street address and city (possibly state) and it would VERY quickly give me driving instructions and it would be very reliable at voice recognition as I do not have an accent. I also feel that Acura has not done enough about fuel efficiency. I still want fast acceleration but I think they've ignored MPG.

Getting Apple/Google into your car's manufacturer radio isn't as simple as it seems. Sure it's more common now, but the industry is still at the beginning stages of it. Not to mention both software/technologies are still in their infancy. And from what I've heard, neither are as intuitive as you would think and are alot less integrated than they're advertised.

Fuel Efficiency...I'll have to disagree with you there, I think Acura has done great. I'm averaging 28mpg in mix city and highway driving from a v6, that's pretty impressive to me. I haven't taken any really long trips, but in a trip from San Jose area to Monterey area, I averaged 38mpg (according to the car info), that's pretty damn impressive, especially coming from a TL.

Acceleration...if you were looking for more, then I think the TLX wasn't the right choice for you. I mean think about it, the car comes on ecofriendly tires, it's a commuter car. As for me, the TLX comes with plenty of power; off the line and at highway speeds to pass.

Back to your GPS issue, I think NavTool is working on a unit for the TLX. It's supposed to mirror your phone to the top screen. I don't know how far they've come, but there's a thread in one of the subsections.

wait, you do know that the "supposed" apple car and google cars are going to be barren and intended for autonomous driving???

it wont need a GPS unit because it is the GPS unit.

WUT?

Verified with a fill up directly (I got 5.9L/100km confirmed by the gas pump calculation method).

Arguably, they have some of the most efficient NA V6's out there. I have an SH-AWD V6 and this was my gas mileage on a highway trip a couple months ago. That's 40.5 MPG. It's a rather extreme case (flat prairies, all highway), but I regularly do 34-38 MPG on the highway, EVERY time. Certainly better than most cars in this class with around that power. Real world fuel economy is almost always better than the ratings for Acuras, not so for some of the other brands.

Also, I wouldn't buy an Apple or Google car. I think those companies would have better luck doing the infotainment design for cars and then selling the design and OS to the major manufacturers. Look at all the issues Tesla is having with fit & finish, suspension, and a multitude of other stuff that the experienced manufacturers just do better. They will catch up eventually, but it will be a long road. Apple and Google, now that would just be terrible, at least for the first 15-20 years they make cars.

I'm still trying to get over you saying you wanted to replace your car because of the GPS in it.

I wouldn't mind buying an Apple/Google car, as long as it didn't look like a rolling egg or cheese wedge. I probably wouldn't buy the first gen, either. Wish I could've taken that mentality with my TLX and its annoying transmission.

So considering your environment, why did you opt for a TLX?

I've only been down to LA a handful of times, but I would think a v6 TLX would be a great car to commute in there. Quiet, comfortable, powerful enough to get by in that horrific traffic, and I think would be one of the best mpg v6 engines out there.

Considering your commute and environment, I would think the 4cyl would've been a better fit for you. To have both power and high mpg in one car is almost contradictory.

I'm going to second what dezymond said. If everywhere is stop and go, what use do you have for power? Where could you possibly use it? If I were in that situation, and I'd get something that's both fairly comfortable and fuel efficient, power be damned. I think the I4 TLX would have been a better choice for you. Or what about something like a hybrid Lexus ES350? A V6 TLX would be an illogical decision in your situation, at least if it were me and my money.

It's not Acura's fault that you're stuck in stop and go traffic constantly. If you're chiding them for not offering an affordable hybrid (since the RLX is priced into the stratosphere), then yes, I understand that criticism and hope the TLX gets a Sport Hybrid version.

Well, it is not always stop and go. But the traffic is always heavy. The v6 is great for getting up to the speed of the 405 and merging into traffic. (Probably the 4 is ok, but if you have an anemic car you will never get past the shoulder.)

For those who don't know, the 405 freeway has been cited as the worst traffic in the nation. But it still will move much of the time.

This was my thought as well.
Odds are, any Apple/Google car is going to be self-driving & that makes it a strong 'no' from me.

I don't have a new car yet - I currently have an Acura TL.

I'm hardly blaming Acura for traffic. I am however wishing I could get some of the luxury features of the Acura in an Accord Hybrid or just get a hybrid Acura (not for better sportiness but for better MPG - the accord hybrid is plenty zippy - my friend has one).

I'm pretty sure the 2017 Accord Hybrid is going to be fairly high end looking inside from what I've seen, at least for an Accord.

Or if you want a luxury ride with plenty of features, the Lexus ES350h seems aimed directly at people like you.

I upgraded from a 08 TL and I can definitely say the TLX is far and above it in terms of power and mpg. There are some things I miss about my TL, such as its steering feel and bit firmer suspension, but otherwise that's it.

The TLX feels significantly lighter than the TL, which means you really feel the power, and the mpg difference is ridiculous, VCM really helps. The TLX, as long as it's in the right gear, feels plenty more zippy compared to a TL.

And the way you worded your first post made it sound like you already own a TLX.

Thanks - unfortunately the Lexus MPG is not impressive particularly when considering the mediocre acceleration. The Accord really has the acceleration and MPG at very acceptable numbers. I don't need 0-60 in 3 seconds (although I wouldn't complain ) I don't want to be hitting over 8 seconds for acceleration. The Prius is actually a fine car in many ways but the acceleration makes it one of the most hated cars on the road IMHO. I don't need 500HP as I'm not towing a yacht but I do want decent acceleration. Rumor has it the new Accord Hybrid for 2017 may be a teeny bit better for acceleration but since there are no official tests, we'll have to wait for a reliable test.

Did you want a link to articles about google cars and apple cars? The questions in the poll were about apple and google cars. The post was a poll I don't get what you wanted.

I know exactly what I want. I wanted to know how many people on this Acura forum would even consider a car made by apple or google. I got some responses to my poll that people here would be interested in an apple car which was more than I thought. I'm starting to see people on this forum being more open to other brands than ever before. I'm not sure I'd buy any car from a new manufacturer e.g. Tesla unless they'd been making the model for at least 5 years. That being said I might be interested in a Tesla if they had made a hybrid or a car that could charge in 10 minutes. I think you wanted to ask a different question but didn't post your own poll.

You must be new here. Have you seen what a lot of the long time members here are driving now?

Hint: they're not Honda's/Acura's

So wait until next year, then buy a Model S. It'll be 5 years in June 2017

I am "interested" in cars from Apple and Google, but that doesn't necessarily translate to "I want to buy one." Did you really mean "interested" in Apple CarPlay or Android Auto rather than autonomous vehicles?

Members here seem pretty open minded and aren't afraid to love and hate Acura.
