You can do a fully adjustable suspension setup on these cars for cheap and be out road racing w/ the best.

My initial answer is
...the GTO is a much more rare car around here...I'm a fan of exclusivity. Double
if it's in that orange color...though I must say I have seen a few of those blacked out with tastefully done exterior and the sound they make is quite heavenly. If it were me I would wait for the new Camaro/Challenger

Looking at suspension setups for the cobra....this kind of scares ya
"79 to 04 Mustangs have a notoriously weak chassis. Take a close look at a Mustang that has been run hard. The doors may not close right, convertible tops do not line up and the alignment shop has trouble getting the car to drive straight. Road race and auto cross cars can actually get shorter from hard braking. If you want your car to remain rattle free, strong and you want to get the most out of other chassis and engine mods, you have to connect the frame sections with something beefier than sheet metal. Sub-frame connectors are a requirement. They are also inexpensive. Griggs racing offers several different types:"
What really I guess has me bothered is the lack of American companies that support the GTO. They are all over europe and australlia but none here. And when I've tried to contact the foreign companies parts cost an arm and a leg once they come. The GTO is a great car (hell Top Gear just tested the GT500 and it ran identical times on the test track against my GTO, well the monaro). So I'm just thinking about other options but have talked myself out of it. I just finally need to spend some money on the suspension of this car.

I really think I need to build a dedicated track car. I think it's finally time to take the b16b out of my garage and put it in a mini cooper. I love the GTO on the track....It's a very capable car...i just don't like beating up my DD.
All in all, the GTO is better then the terminator in every way except maybe ease of power modability and the cheapness/availability of parts
I think the GTO is a great car. That interior is niiice. And that makes all the difference with a daily driver. Mustangs are the exact opposite.
If you are getting itchy I would wait for the new Camaro. That car will be amazing ...
IRS, LS7(?), and if the interior on the G8 is anything to go by, a great place to sit in. That is a win win proposition. and it will be reasonaby priced. It should probably get decent gas mileage if driven nicely as well.

The HSV Front end (I assume that's the one you mean) requires you to replace the headlights as well....it becomes a VERY VERY expensive project.
There are a few companies that make cheap reproductions.....but once they get to the states...they aren't cheap and the quality is CRAP
you mean this one right?
Probably not. I'm a Mustang fan, but have a strong appreciation for the newer GTOs. Mustangs have a strong aftermarket support, including parts offered through Ford Racing. However, I've always appreciated the appeal of the GTO. To me it seems to be a vehicle that seems to posses everything in needs, and nothing it doesn't. I suppose if you are looking for a dedicated track vehicle or weekend racer, the vendor and design support currently offered to the Mustang makes it a very attractive vehicle to start modifying for various applications.

In all honesty...i'm not looking for a bazillion HP either (hence why i've kept my motor stock cept for a tune; not like 370 hp/370 lb to the wheels is a bad thing).

(unless the japanese come up w/ something that will fill my new torque addiction)I'm excited about the new Nissan GT-R coming out next year. your looking 70s-80s grand. this car gonna keep the 911 turbo on it's toes.
if this above your budget then keep your GTO and save for the GT-R
