Mechanic Crashes $500K Porsche on Drive Back to Owner
PORT CHESTER, N.Y. (AP) -- This is one big "Uh-Ohh.'' A mechanic who finished doing minor body work on a $500,000 sports car crashed the Porsche Carrera G-T into a telephone pole, while he was driving it back to the customer.
Mechanic Chris Numme of Port Chester says he and a helper were in the car when he swerved to avoid a truck and lost control. Numme says he was going no faster than 30 miles per hour.
He's says he's thankful he and his friend are alive.
Numme had fixed a crack in the car's side at his repair shop and was returning the silver sports car to a Greenwich, Conn., dealer the morning of Nov. 24 when he crashed.
The car is owned by a 70-year-old Robert Greenhill, an investment banker from Greenwich.
The two-seater limited-edition sports car's engine boasts more than 600 horsepower. The car can accelerate from a standing start to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds.
Numme says his insurance company has already located a replacement car.

sucks for his insurance premiums, you mean. heh heh.
I don't know if cornering in any direction at 30 mph in that car could possibly break traction. Stomping on the gas definitely could. RWD + 600 hp makes for some pretty interesting low speed handling, especially if throttle control isn't part of your vocabulary.

Typical mechanic. Took it for a joy ride and recked it. Typical swerving to miss _______ and swearing to going no faster than 30 mph bullshit. I see this all the time on the Viper boards.
Seems like you can't trust anybody with your car anymore.

Yeh, when I heard the story on the radio this morning, they said that he neglected to tell the cops the part about the truck coming out of nowhere.
You don't think there is a chance he made that part up, do ya?

BTW, am I the only one picturing this photo in the back of Autoweek with the other goofy photos under the "Photos Without a Caption" headline?
I mean, how perfect.... a wrecked Carrera GT hitting a pole with a sign that says "No Standing Anytime", and about 7-8 guys literally just standing around...

PORT CHESTER - Some minor body work turned a $500,000 sports car into scrap when a village mechanic crashed his customer's Porsche Carrera GT into a telephone pole.
Although the carbon-fiber convertible has a top speed of more than 200 mph, Chris Numme said he wasn't doing more than 30 when he lost control as he swerved to avoid a truck on Pearl Street.
"Virtually, the car felt like it just went on a piece of black ice and careened into the telephone pole," Numme said. "I'm thankful that we're alive and that we walked away from it. It was an honest accident."
Numme, 48, had fixed a crack in the car's side at his repair shop and was on his way with a friend to return the silver sports car to a Greenwich, Conn., dealer the morning of Nov. 24. But as he drove south on Pearl Street, a truck rolled past a stop sign at William Street, triggering the accident, Numme said.
The mechanic said he lost control of the sports car, owned by a 70-year-old investment banker from Greenwich, as he turned the wheel and shifted from first gear to second. The car slid into the pole, he said, its windshield shattered and the front wheels and side panels buckled.
"It's a carbon-fiber car," Numme said. "You're not talking about a metal car. It's a carbon composite, which will just disintegrate."
Both passengers complained of minor injuries, according to the police accident report. No charges were filed, and there was no mention of the truck in the report.
The car is owned by Robert F. Greenhill, the founder and chief executive of Greenhill & Company, a New York City investment banking firm. Greenhill, who lives in Greenwich, took the car to the dealer for a $7,000 to $8,000 repair.
The two-seater limited-edition sports car's engine boasts more than 600 horsepower, according to RSportsCars.com, a Web site for car enthusiasts. The car can accelerate from a standing start to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds and has an estimated base price of $484,000.
Greenhill could not be reached yesterday for comment. Numme said his insurance company has already located a replacement car.

Although I half-agree in that a pole impact really tests the structure of a car to the max.

So, by definition, that would NOT be a joy ride. It would be the mechanic delivering it to his customer per his customer's instructions and crashing
edit - just talked to one of my guys who gets some of the info... apparently the truth is starting to come out... they're now estimating he was doing around 45mph. Still wouldn't fit MY definition of joy riding, but he was going faster then the posted speed limit...
