Worn Tires

I have about 15k miles on the G37S Sedan and the tires are pretty much bold in the rear. As I've asked around it seems pretty average for the stock summer tires they put on the car. The rear right tire is actually the most bold, and they say that's normal as well. I did the penny test, and looked at the bar indicators, and it seems they are at the bald level of 2/34"...

The question now is living in Florida where it's not raining/snowing right now...how long can I run these tires? The tires are a little more worn out on certain spots than others, but the tread is still visible if that means anything. I have so many expenses that came up recently, I'm not sure if I'm ready to drop a few hundred on the rear tires. They are not rotatable either...I did find some great deals on TireRack, but I just want to know how much longer I can actually safely drive on them, and when are they literally an endangerment?

Thanks!

They are an endangerment already if they only have 2/32" left. As long as it is dry out you'll have better traction actually, but the second it rains your screwed.

, and iirc with under 2/32's of tread, they are actually illegal to drive on, if a cop wanted to be an asshole

being that you are in florida, with no snow, you can get away with more worn tires, but i have recommend tire on cars at work, because the tread was starting to get low (they still had "life" though technically), but for maximum grip especially in the snow, the customer really should think about new tires though

As long as it's dry out and you check the tires frequently, you can run them. Being aware of the "penny" trick and being self conscious about your tires shows me that you know when something isn't right with the car. Like I said, check frequently and be prepared to spend the money soon. I'd avoid driving over 60 and as well 100% avoid wet conditions.

You typically want to start looking for new tires when your tires are at 4/32.

Isnt that normally the case for certain tire, like all weather?

Because summer tire's compound is good, when its worn down it wont have better traction.

I know the theory behind it is, with worn tires you have more grip because more rubber is touching the road. But thats not true for all tires, and I think summer is one of them

As for OP just keep an eye on them, and watch out for water patches if they ever show up on curves. Or else on dry roads you should be fine. Keep checking to make sure you arent seeing any cords, or whatever they are called.

This is like asking if you're ok driving without any seat belts on. Sure you're fine, til you crash. And being in FL, I know they have almost daily quick thunderstorms so it's almost impossible to avoid being in the wet.

There's a tire ad at the bottom of your thread. I think that speaks for it.

Get up to $80 when you purchase a set of select Goodyear or Dunlop tires.

On a serious note, I'd replace them as soon as possible. You don't want to risk your life or potentially a terrible accident because you didn't want to spend the money you'll end up spending anyway.

You realize that you are trying to milk a set of tires that are already pass the point of being unsafe and you are driving a $35K car. WTF....go buy some tires. It is not worth someone's life.

Yea, you should buy tires but probably can get away with a bit more mileage. You just have to ask, is 1,000 miles or so worth getting in the car, praying it doesn't rain? Does it drive ok now?

Go buy new tires.

Worse comes to worst, and you cannot afford two new tires, and you MUST drive it, then buy some used tires after inspecting them thoroughly. I do not recommend this at all, but it is an alternative if you're in dire straits.

This. I can't say that I never pushed the limits with tire wear, but that was in college and was truly broke. If you can afford a g37s, you should be able to properly maintain it.

If you wanna really cheap out you can try one of those used tire places. We have one here in town and they have sets of nearly new tires for as much as 75% below MSRP. Just have to hope they have your size in stock...

If it's dry, & you don't speed around you should be able to get more use. But yeah if it rains & the road is slick you may be skidding. How long are you trying to hold on to them? A few hundred miles should be ok, but don't push it.

15k out of the tires? Hmmm I'm almost at 7k and my tires are around 7/32 all the way around. I figured I could get 20k+ out of these tires. I also baby the car too.

I'd just get tires man. It does rain even if it doesn't snow.

What do you mean they are not able to be rotated? Even if they are directional, you can still switch the fronts with the rears. Or are the fronts worse?

I'd sell some stuff or take out a loan. If you have to ask if they're okay to drive on, they're probably not.

i've heard of 8ki miles out of a set of tires, and NO it was not a supercar or anything, but just a Subaru Outback XT (turbo), but i don't think the alignment was perfect from the start though, and babying does help make them last longer too

also don't you mean "It doesn't rain, it POURS"

I have the same car so I figured 15k seemed a little early for tires.

With him in FL it rains in the middle of summer so I wouldn't be rocking tires that are almost bald.

You'll be fine OP. You'll definitely fail the safety inspection with those tires.

or emissions (got those here; but only every 2 years though, and to pass that , "all" the emissions equipment has to be on it for visual, then it just has to blow good numbers ; then you will pass)

btw, i have gone through emissions with a bad master cylinder ; it actually went on the way out while driving to the emissions center
