Yeah but the GoPro doesn't have GPS. Also if you really always want to have dash cam running then you would want it to be able to auto delete the oldest file. That camera also looks to be one of the smallest I have seen so hopefully you could completely hide it behind the rear view mirror.

After seeing the price, Im thinking about buying it specifically for the car. I like that it has GPS and speed readings on it. I should be able to use it to fight possible tickets.
The picture quality seems very good too:

Also I am worried about the fact the guy says in his review the cords are really should so he isn't sure you would have enough length to conceal them. I would want enough cable to go around the windshield and store the GPS antenna in the dash and then also hard wire power to the fuse box.
I wouldn't be too worried about GPS myself. Just something to document the action (which is better then having nothing at all). I'd just suction it to the window or dash, then hide it or take it with when leaving the car... so not too worried about it being hidden. Then I can take it karting, sky-diving, and whatever else I do

For power, build your own cable. Thats what Im doing. Im also going to build my own mount so I wont have to use that bulky suction cup. If I do get pulled over, the cop wont see it up there.

Ive been doing a bit of research, the V1000GS appears to be a knock off of the DOD GS600:
http://dod-tec.us/dod-gs600-car-came...-with-gps.html
It also comes with a 13ft power cable. Im not sure which one hit the market first, but you can get the DOD version on Amazon, plus there is a warranty.

crap that thing is expensive, so our only options are chinese shitboxes and high end law enforcement spec black boxes?
Is there anything in between, like say, something around $100 that can be bought with semi-decent quality that will loop record on ignition?
Ive done my own googling and wasnt successful

$220 for a GPS data logger, HD, and small form factor isnt really expensive IMO - as long as the quality is there. Reviews on Amazon seem to be favorable, but there are a few saying its crap.
Im sure you can find cheaper units. Search for "car dvr". But youll probably find tons of "chinese shitboxes".

Another option - VholdR came out with a new version of the Contour equipped with GPS. It has its drawbacks though. No auto recycle, no autostart, it doesnt look like you can charge and record at the same time, you need to figure out how to mount it and its larger. But, the build and video quality is good and its around $250 online.
It would be great for track days too, since you can use a program called DashWare to overlay telemetry data.

auto-loop/auto start is the biggest thing imo for a car dvr... I like the muvi mini dvr on amazon but it doesnt auto loop ~_~
I might end up just buying a cheapo one and trying it out when i get the time

I found the difference in the two units. The VS1000GS does not have an internal GPS antenna and the DOD GS600 does have an internal one. I definitely like the DOD GS600 if it is the same video quality. It basically costs the same as the VS1000GS when you chose to include the GPS antenna.

"He does, in fact, have a lengthy rap sheet of Highway Traffic Act offences — 26 in four years — but most are for licence plate issues and speeding, and he has no criminal history. He believes police stop him more frequently than others because they are suspicious of a young man of colour driving a nice car."
If only HeartTLs drove a TSX, we would all know his name and what he looks like.
I mean a TSX isn't a bucket, but it doesn't stick out like a 7-series.

Who's hiding? I live in NY and frequently go to NY/NJ meets, if you're feeling and want to know what I look like.

If you do a search for the V1000GS, the newer version has an internal antenna. I too was thrown off by the antenna, but it seems to be an older version.

There's a reason it's so cheap. I thought I was getting a bargain, but I guess not. I'll be contacting someone for a refund. It worked fine for a couple days. It took video in 15 minute segments. To make space I deleted the videos, then the screen says the SD card is full - impossible. Now the unit either doesn't turn on, or shuts itself off. When the unit is turned on it displays the "Welcome" screen indefinitely, then when the SD card is inserted it will shut off. If I'm able to turn it on, it will go to record mode once I eject the SD card. The unit just went wacko.

If you're looking for an inexpensive camera that works good, try this out. I haven't had one problem with this working incorrectly.
Issues I have with it (but for the price, is just fine...):
Picture isn't the greatest. It isn't real clear. If you're using this to read road signs or license plates, forget it. If you're using it to show that there are in fact other cars or large objects, it is just fine.

Good thing I didnt order that Lukas camera. I found a different one I want more
Its the BlackVue DR400G-HD. It shoots 1920x1080 30fps, has GPS, and has a great form factor. The one feature I really like is the parking mode. Most of the cameras Ive looked at have a parking mode, but this one only records if it detects motion or if the car gets hit. The videos look pretty good too, especially at night. I can actually make out the license plates, which is the whole point behind a dash cam. You can also adjust the settings through the software. The downside is its more expensive then the others at around $250 on ebay.
To give you an idea of the size:
