Why is the Scion tC so fast?

Car and Driver test results:

ACCELERATION, Seconds
Zero to 30 mph: 2.4............ ..............................TSX: 2.5
40 mph: 3.8....................... ...............................TSX: 3.9
50 mph: 5.3....................... ...............................TSX: 5.5
60 mph: 7.4................................. .......................TSX: 7.2
70 mph: 9.7................................. .......................TSX: 9.5
80 mph: 12.6............................... .......................TSX: 11.8
90 mph: 16.4............................... .......................TSX: 15.3
100 mph: 20.9............................. .......................TSX: 19.0
110 mph: 28.4............................. .......................TSX: 24.4
Street start, 5-60 mph: 8.0........... .......................TSX: 7.7
Top-gear acceleration, 30-50 mph: 8.5................TSX: 10.2
50-70 mph: 9.0.................. ................................ TSX: 9.7
Standing 1/4-mile: 15.7 sec @ 88 mph...................TSX: 15.6 sec @ 91 mph
Top speed (governor limited): 127 mph..................TSX: 133 mph (drag limited)

Sure the TSX is a little faster but it has 40hp and 3 ft lbs more than the tC. There's only 300lbs between the two which I wouldn't have thought would make that much of a difference.

So if the TSX was below 3000 lbs would it run mid 6's in 0-60 and somewhere in mid to high 14's in the quarter?

Well relative to the HP/TQ difference, 300 pounds is a lot.

Weight is always a killer in performance - and not just straight line either.

I was scanning a Czech auto rag and they had a 650kg Smart car equiped with a Suzuki GSX-R motorcycle engine in it (165HP @ 11,500RPM). Guess what - it can easily beat an EVO!!!!! 0-60 in 4s.

Why even compare?
Besides, if you bought the TSX because you wanted something quick, I think you got the wrong car.

Dan, it could be a mechanical grip advantage to the TC. The 88mph trap speed kind of tends to show that.

I would love to see those numbers with a 5mph headstart.

300lbs is certainly not the only answer for such an offset in times/power.

Are these numbers with using a Man or Auto Trans? I would think it was with the Man.

I have no interest in a tC, just making conversation.

That's what I'm thinking. There's got to be more to it than just the weight difference. If you have 2 people in your car, chances are you're over 300lbs. I think 40 hp and 3 ft lbs would more than make up the weight difference.

Here's another way to think about it:

300 lbs = 9% weight increase
40 hp = 20% power increase

Back when the TSX came out member SteVtec (I think) calculated the TSX's 0-60 times based on weight/power/gearing etc. But, when he found out the TSX wheels weighed so much he changed his results eventhough the vehicle weight remained the same. Just throwing that out there and could gearing have anything to do with it?

I think the most surprising is the 50-70 mph test. I thought that would be the TSX's strongest point. Maybe gearing does come into play but I would think C&D would just leave it in 3rd for that pull.

Power to weight ratios:

TSX: 0.0606
Tc: 0.0533

TSX has a 13 percent bigger PTW ratio.

Judging from the numbers shown, the Tc has a BIG grip advantage (that's why it leads all the way up to 50). It also might be our heavy wheels, but I have no idea how much Tc wheels weigh. After that, the PTW ratio kicks in and the TSX is gone. Does the Tc have an LSD or something?

And gearing might be a factor as well. Can someone post the gearing numbers up?

I really really really like the tC.

I think it needs a LSD as an option. Specially when you get the TRD supercharger on there.

Now those are the numbers I want to see...with the S/C

But the same person that would add a supercharger will also add other stuff to the car to make it

I can't see the supercharger getting the car outta the 15's unless its way underrated.

Whats the gearing in the tC... knowing Toyota its probably quite aggressive. Look at the Solara verses the Accord V6 6mt. The 5 speed auto on the Solara has gears I've only seen on 4 cylinder cars, very aggressive for quick starts with a tall 5th for cruising.
