Why does the US hate cars
#41
No you're wrong, VW still hasnt confirmed the Golf R. Well I havent checked recently but the date from the article tells me that they haven't confirmed. They are still thinking about it, and it is a good chance it will come here, but there is still a chance it won't.
btw did you read the title of the article?

No the US doesnt really hate cars. The point of this thread was to show I wanted a Golf R, and other European editions of cars we don't get here. I know we have special editions that stays within the US. So european guys that like muscle cars wish they had some of our editions. I love european cars, so I wish I had the choice of their special editions they offered there. And that goes same for Japan. I wasnt actually implying that the US hates cars. I guess my title is pretty misleading.

Yea I'm hopefully we will get it. Only thing that can stop it from coming is the economy. I would have been very happy to have Scirocco here, but that will for sure be a no since the GTI doesnt sell that well here anyways, and the Scirocco would just take away sales from the GTI. One day when VW's image in America is imporved we will get more cars from them. They are making a car with America as its primary market, and it will be built in their new factory in America. Hopefully that car does well and people will start looking at VW's when they buy there next car.

I don't see a huge market for the Golf R. It's gonna cost at least as much as the 2008 R32 costed us right? That was a fantastic car but 33 thousand for a VW hatchback? Sorry. Maybe if it had a torque vectoring (or otherwise advanced) AWD system and more than 250 horsepower it would be justified.
At least the Golf R will probably deliver superior performance in every way, but still.
Now if it had nearly 300 horsepower or something we could take.

It sucks that even Ford produced cars like the Escort Cosworth RS and Focus RS for Europe while we didn't get anything close to it.
You can't tell me those cars wouldn't sell in the US. If they did, I'd probably be a Ford guy.

Does the A4's quattro system even have torque vectoring AWD? IIRC it doesnt. So I dont see how it is that overpriced. Its just like any european car, a ltl overpriced compared to domestic cars.

I dont see how its that overpriced? Considering the luxury that will be offered which is comparable to that of a BMW or Audi. You will get AWD, 270hp i believe, and hatchback utility for about 33-35k(Thats what they are estimating the price to be for the Gofl R) Not bad considering you can get a base A4 with front wheel drive and 211 hp for 32k or you can upgrade to AWD of the A4 for another 2 grand or so.

A 265 horsepower hatch for in exess of 33 thousand is pricey. That's nearly in Evo and STI territory. Don't get me wrong they have crap interiors in comparison but the average compact car buyer in the range is gonna want performance.
You have to understand I like the car, but it's at the wrong price point I think. They'll move a few thousand units I bet, and I'm glad they're bringing it over, but it won't be a game changer or anything of that nature.

Some people say that the GTI has a comparable interior to that of a BMW. Thats a 25k car, and Im sure this Golf R will have an upscale interior to that of the GTI, and I believe it will be comparable to Audi and BMW as interiors go. I dunno though, we shall see when it comes out. I believe the price is justified though.

Dunno, for me, the interior of an "R" model is irrelevant (everyone seems to care about interiors lately--its supposed to be a performance oriented car, not a fashion statement). In fact, to me, a "R" model should have a stripped interior compared to a base model (a la the original Integra Type R). Again, my opinion, but 270 hp for $33k seems a little weak when others (WRX, speed3) have that in ~$25k cars and others have over 300 when you push past $30k (Genesis 3.8, 135, STI, EVO).
I'm sure it is a nice car and has its market, but I think its market is pretty small. Certainly isn't going to put a dent in 2011 Mustang sales. Different strokes, maybe too different for here.
(I seem to be fixated on parentheses lately.)

Don't worry. Some where in Europe, there's a Norwegian constantly wondering why the ZR1 isn't in the European market.

But yea, I see your guys point on it being a ltl overpriced and I totally agree, that goes the same for the GTI, which is a car I love and hope to get as my first car. And those same arguments you guys are holding up for the golf R are basically the same arguments against the GTI how it is way underpowered when it comes to its competition. Which I totally agree, they should up the power more but dont keep it to high because then you get torque steer and what not. But the car as a whole its just a complete package. It has more of a refined and mature look than its competition too.
