When trading do you mention aftermarket parts?

I am thinking of trading my CL-S tonight and I know not every dealer will notice the aftermarket parts on the car. Do the parts help or hurt my trade in value? Should I offer the dealer the factory parts?

They will most likely hurt the trade in value. Not everyone in the market for a new car wants aftermarket parts.

If you want to keep the parts on the car and sell it as-is, I would try to sell it locally. Craigslist maybe?

well I would love to sell it privately because I know I would get a lot more for it. However the vehicle I want to trade it on it is not going to last long. I don't have the time to wait for a buyer.

OEM parts are the only parts that add value. So if you have the OEM spoiler you'll get more for that. If you have an aftermarket spoiler... not so much.

If you're trading it in my suggestion would be to take off whatever you can and put it back to stock... then sell the aftermarket parts seperately. That's the only way you'll see some money for them.

Even when selling it privately, unless you find a buyer who likes your aftermarket accessory choices you really won't see any money for them... especially in this market. How many ads have you seen on CL or eBay where it says the car was $30k new, it has $15k in aftermarket into it, and the car is for sale for like $18k. I've seen a bunch, and it's b/c aftermarket parts do not add value.

Luckily my parts are fairly basic. I have the H&R springs/tokico struts, Comptech CAI, and Neuspeed Strut bar. Neither of these three things are worth my time taking off and the chevy dealer im looking to trade at probably won't even notice these additions. I think im going to go with keeping my mouth shut and just hope they give me a fair trade in.

They should notice the CAI... but the springs/struts and strut bar... maybe not. Being that the CAI is Comptech, if they say something you can talk about Comptech and their relationship with Acura which may actually help things!

BTW, aside from a Corvette... what could the Chevy dealer possibly have to entice you so much?

Some might find this strange but its a 2005 Chevy Avalanche LT Z71 w/38K miles. Since I have had the acura I have also driven a beater explorer for things like snow, fishing, or hauling small things. I am tired of having two vehicles and I want something that can comfortably haul 4 adults around when we go somewhere with our friends. Its hard enough to find an avalanche for sale around here let along one with low miles in good condition.

^ I love the Avalanche! I keep telling my wife one day we'll pick one up as our hauling vehicle. It's a tough sell right now though b/c I have the FJ.

Damn dude, why are you trading that car in? The fact that there's an Avalanche you like or not, there are so few 6MT CL-S for sale right now that I would think you could sell it pretty quickly.

How many miles do you have on it?

62K and I have every service record from the day it rolled off the show room into my hands. I know it would probably be an easy sell. I just don't want to deal with the hassle of listing it, showing it, and then once it sells I don't know how long it will be until I find something I want.

So all that isn't worth thousands of dollars to you? Because that's what you're giving up by trading that in.

Your car is probably going to be reconditioned and sold for $11k on a lot somewhere.

Even if you only got $8500, I bet that's a few grand more than you're being offered as a trade.

My uncle loves his Avalanche. Good luck with it.

As for your car, I'd leave it as-is and not mention anything. I did the same thing last month when I traded my car. I probably could have gotten more for it privately, but I didn't want the hassle. Plus, you only pay tax on the amount of the new car minus the trade amount, so that's kinda nice.

If anything, I bet they only notice the CAI.

The springs and struts will not hurt much. And since the CAI is less like a AEM I think you will be fine. If you have the stock intake parts then try to change it out real quick. It should not take too long.

If you choose to leave them all then do not offer to give them the stock parts. It just points out that the car is modified. Just take it in and only bring it up if asked.

Good luck with the sale.

Aftermarket parts hurt resale value. I'm honest about the parts so that the next owner will get a head's up.

I strongly recommend you take off at least some of your aftermarket parts so you can sell them. Leaving them on is going to cost you money you could have made selling them. You will make more selling your aftermarket parts than selling your leftover OEM parts. The springs you can probably leave on as they are expensive to remove and most new owners won't notice them.

Since it appears you feel that you are pressed for time--I'm sure there's more than one Avalanche out there--at least keep the OEM parts and sell those to make up part of your down payment.

With that said....my brother LOVES LOVES LOVES his Avalanche and it's been reasonably reliable as well.

Well went to look at the truck tonight and..... Its sold

It hasn't moved since saturday and their computer still showed it as available. However the sales manager stepped in and said it wasn't for sale. Frustrated we left and called the internet manager back to ask the status of the truck. She showed it was still forsale so she checked on it for us. Turns out the sales manager's son is buying it.

The part that made this truck more special than any of the others is the 38K miles for the same price as all the others with 80K miles. It also had every option possible.

As far as removing the CAI or other parts, I would rather not. For the hundred dollars I might get for it, its not worth the time of me taking it off. I also realize I now have the option to sell privately and I will consider it again.

Well, since the truck is sold and you have some time to truck-hunt again, you might as well list it in the meantime to see if you get any bites on it. Good luck!

^^^^

There will be more to come although I agree, it's a PITA waiting around for a vehicle exactly like you want.

yup my CLS was an 03 as well and it had 63K. This truck has never been driven in the rain according to the previous owner. It still has a new leather smell inside
