When is it running a red light?

I can't seem to find the California definition of an "intersection" but here in AZ the actual intersection begins at the point of intersection of the curb of the two roads (often much farther out than the crosswalk). If there are red light cameras, there often is a red line painted on the road (here) for photographic purposes that delineates the actual point of the intersection.

I know in Oregon they can cite you for accelerating to beat a yellow and though I've done it many times myself, I've never been stopped for it nor have I ever heard of anybody who has.
Yes, it varies by state. In Illinois they considering it running a red if you are not more than 1/2 way through before the red light comes on. (In the city of Chicago, they used to have no overlap on the reds, i.e. when one light turns red, the opposite lights turn green at the exact same time.)
