you can't find a cheap detector that is good. The cheapest option would be a 8500 x50, you can get those for 180 or so. I would recommend the valentine v1 though, I have it and it saves me all the time.

if u r going to buy a radar detector, just save your money and just buy the best... V1 or Escort... whats the point of buying a a mediocre radar and still getting a ticket?

I would look at the Beltronics Vector series radar detectors. They are probably the best bang for the buck.

valentine 1. don't screw around with cheap ones, the price difference is small compared to getting a ticket.

its going to be probably the valentine V1 or the Escort X50, both are very good detectors. The nice thing about the Valentine is that they have an upgrade program...

^Have they changed much in the past 3 years?

I sold mine because I was tired of the false alarms from laser-based cruise control.

The V1 is a great detector but the new Escort 9500iX is amazing, uses satellite technolgy to warn you of right lights and speed cameras.
Also has the ability to store and lock out false alarms, pricy at $499 but worth every penny.

The newer Beltronics Vectors share the same M4 antenna as the X50 (the range will be the same) but it just has less features. I have the Beltronics Vector 940 and its been great.

Here is some interesting information to look at:http://www.guysoflidar.com/august-20...ctor-test.html

Yup. Beltronics and Escort are the same company. I know the OP is on a budget, but I hear great things about the 9500ix

I hated my V1, Pretty much gave it away. Only detector ill use is the Escort 8500-9500. Too many fall for the arrows.

One of the reasons i hated the V1 was all the falses. Plus the Escort has a FAR superior multi bogey display

They are almost useless. Ask me how I know.

Hint; Cops activate the radar gun once you are caught. Radar detectors start to panick... too late.

They can help, but don't rely exclusively on them.

FYI, going out to Vegas right now, my friend's driving, I brought my Beltronics RX65 (same as 50x), and it's quite amazing how well it picks up Ka band, which is what they use out here. It picked a signal around a bend and there was a wall running along the side of the road!!

Nope...

Cops don't use POP radar to get your speed...Ask me how I know.

Hint: I actually have a radar detector that has saved me from countless tickets.

Radar detectors work well in a few situations: if a cop is stationary and you pick up their signal before they are able to tag you (similar to how it goes off with those "speed limit" boxes that police use, I get that signal with enough time to slow down). Also if they are coming at you but you are not the first vehicle, you will pick up their signal when they are tagging the ones before you.

If you are all alone or the lead vehicle and the cop is approaching you, then yes radar detectors are no help as you are tagged as soon as your detector chirps.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your Bel as much as I do. The RX65 is a great detector BTW.

Only if the LEO is using instant on, then that situation applies.

I got a 9500ix a couple weeks ago. It hasn't picked up many speed traps (haven't driven much lately), but the GPS feature is awesome. It stays quiet as I drive around, where my roommate's 8500 x50 goes off in the same locations.

That's simply false.

I'm a Valentine 1 guy myself, however, can't go wrong either way.

I'm also going to recommend you do a search. This topic has been beaten to death many times... so no point in going through it all again when there is already tons of good info available by searching.
