it should out accelerate a CL-S
it will rape a CL in cornering and braking.
Even used ones are expensive. When they were made the 4 door was the fasted sedan on the planet if that says anything about it.

Fast in stock form, can be ridiculous with mods. And as for the handling, braking, and cornering, come on now: It's an M3, nuff said. Personally, if I were to buy one, I'd leave it stock. Don't know why. I guess I wouldn't want to mess with a car that is so good to begin with, if that makes sense.

two weekends ago we were at a dyno day in pittsburgh and there was a 3.0L E36 M3 with us. When we did the 1/4 mile runs I ran 14.77 seconds, but the smaller engine, less hp M3 ran 13.9X seconds. Deutsche engineering at its best.

I've fancied the idea of trading in my CL-S for an E36.
I happen to LOVE this particular automobile. The aftermarket parts available are fairly plentiful as well.
Handling:
Theres truly NOTHING like BMW engineering. Its a VERY solid and comfortable feel from the time you enter a turn, until you slam down the gas to exit a turn. SUPERB handling for a car this size. Tight, but VERY comfortable.
Performance:
Off the line, as well as 1/4 mile times are MUCH better than a modded CL-S. It has a low sounding and tough take off sound. TORQUE is the word that comes to my mind.
Braking:
Currently, new BMW's come with a 3 year guarantee on brakes, so no more BULLSHITTING with the dealers. BMW brakes are AWESOME, even from high speed braking there is NO SHUDDER or fade.
Downfalls:
Can be difficult to find a manual. I believe that there are much more auto's out there than manuals. Not sure if this is true, but this is what i've found in the DC area.
Older model. Next to impossible to find one with any warranty remaining. Performance cars are purchased by performance drivers---in other words the majority of them have DEFINITELY been pushed to the limit.
Service. Routine maintenance is OUTRAGEOUSLY high, but the service is great, not sure if its worth the money or not.
Overall, I love this car.

To answer the other question, about which engine is better to mod, the S50 (3.0L) or S52 (3.2L). The OBD-I 3.0L responds to mods LIGHT YEARS better than the 3.2 does. You can convert a 3.2L to OBD-I (illegal in emissions states though) or punch a 3.0L out to 3.2L (or more).
To see how much better the 3.0L responds to mods as compared to the 3.2L, go to http://www.activeautowerke.com/dyno/default.asp and check out the dynos of similarly modded 1995 (3.0) M3s vs the 96-99 (3.2L) M3s.

They are nice, I had a 95 (luxury package, 5spd, Daytona Violet/Mulberry Int)......wasn't the fastest thing on the planet, I didn't do too much to it. But overall it was a great car, the 95's are the way to go if you're into tuning (but they are tough to find in really nice shape at this point).

I usually think of this:

$39k for a used '99 M3 Convertible with average miles seems really high.
