What are the collectable cars of tomorrow?

What cars available today do you think will be the sought after collectable cars of tomorrow? When I say today I mean with in the last 10 or so years.

P cars, I think the carerra GT, GT3 and GT2 will be the only factory made porsches to be really collectable in the future.

F cars, F40, F50 and Enzo, I think the rest will be remembered, but not like those three.

Ford GT, Pontiac GTO, Civic SI, Integra Type R, Supra, NSX, Z8, Z3 M coupe, 8 series, Marauder(maybe due to being rare), any of the low production stangs, Z06's, RS4, RS6, any of the SRTs(minus the SRT6), RX7, SC400...????

I'm trying to think of cars that are some what rare, yet changed things.

hard to say really... who would have thought some of the old original Hemi's of the 70's would be worth so much.

I would think some of the GM F-Body cars, such as: The WS6 or 6-speed Z-28's. The last model year run.

Personally, I would like to own one.

I apologize if some of my choices don't fall exactly within your parameters Tireguy, but there are some cars currently available that are still reasonably priced which I think may notably increase in value within the next few years. In fact some are currently on a strong upswing.

Offhand I would think:

Buick Grand National/ GNX/ T-type. Within the last few years these cars have increased in value dramatically. GNX's now fetch into the six figures and pristine GN's are following as well. Blindingly fast, crude suspensions, seats five, and cosmetically appealing. Some argue the last throwback to the warriors of yesteryear.

Datsun 240Z. Currently way undervalued but beginning to climb. Who didn't lust over one of these things in the early 70's? Perhaps responsible for bring Japanese performance to the North American marketplace with reliability and engineering. Of course they were basically bodied in the same sort of material usually reserved to wrap a stick of chewing gum.

Corvette Z06. Who ever said Detroit can't build cars to compete with the Europeans? And at a fraction of the price? I would imagine the late model F-bodies will increase as well.

TT Supra. I can't believe the values these things are increasing by. The drivetrains of these things are supposedly overbuilt and lend themselves quite easily to modifications and tuning.


I'm sure there are many others from the '06 Shelby Hertz to a few notable imports, but who knows what the future markets will bring. The collector car market is fickle at best, but cars that truly had an automotive influence always seem to bring the money.

If you can fully restore this list to stock (perhap a little modification on some...). Also, put these cars at the 20 - 30 year mark. That is when cars start to really name their price. It also depends on how rare they are.

1995 Acura Legend Coupe (L)
~1997 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo
~2002 BMW M3 CSL
any year Maybach 57
2007 Dodge Charger SRT-8 (this is my wild card)
2007 Saturn Sky Redline
Nissan Skyline 400r

I think certain cars will have their cult fanatics still, much like the vw bug. Won't necessarily pull a lot at auction, but I'd still consider it a "collectors car".

The Lincoln Blackwood and for all the wrong reasons. As much of a flop as it was, there were no more than 400 made. Instant collector's item.

It's pretty much a given that any Exotic will be highly wanted. But i believe the cars that people will be going nuts for are the cars people grew up with but couldnt have, had one but had to sell, dad had one......etc. Similar to the muscle cars and baby boomer fads. There will be a bunch of guys 20 years from now wanting rx7's, supras, type r integras, srt-4's, AMG benz's, BMW M's, Chryslers SRT Line, current mustangs and F body's. Cars like De Loreans, E30 and E36 are starting to level out in pricing. I think cars like the E30 M is at it's cheapest point and good condition cars will demand some serious cash. I have already seen my 4th gen Fbodies with LS1 command serious dough, especially special editions like the formula firehawks, 1LE cars, and Dick Harrel cars.

I agree about the '02 M3 CSL, the low production figires really make that the hot ticket. With a production of ... zero ... its gonna be a monster on the auction block!

If the past predicts the future low production numbers will rule. The issue is that modern cars lack the 200 plus options of 60s and 70s era muscle cars, with just no chance of having a 1 of 5 or 10 car.

I think you are spot on about the P cars, except you left out the most collectable of all (with the exception of the CGT) the 997 GT3RS.

On the F car side you also left out the 360CS and the upcoming 430 Scuderia both of which will have a serious following.

The Ford GT will be a winner, the Viper to a lesser extent and despite the Vette mania the Z06, just due to production figures. The Supra, NSX and upcoming "Skyline" will likely do well. The Shelby variants of the Mustang will certainly do well.

My hypothesis: every performance car or hi-po version of a car will be a collectible car in 30 years after final production.

There will always be a few loose nuts running around who will collect Olds Aleros, Camrys and Accords, but the collector market will be in the sports and hi-po versions of cars (i.e. the V6 Chrysler 300s will disappear without a whimper, but the 300Cs and SRT-8s will be desirable collectibles).

Acura Legend, esp the GS trim that featured the type II engine (230hp) and 6 speed manual.

NSX? reliable supercar, nice daily driver

BMW e30 for its raw performance

BMW e39 M5, most say it's the most beautiful 5'er and it has a timeless design

Toyota Supra Turbo, insane potential because of it's super strong engine

Mazda RX-7

Honda S2000?

Any Ferrari, Porsche or Corvette will be a collectable. Of the cars in current production, I foresee the following as collectables:

Mustang GT (only the 3G Mustangs were ever actually forgettable, the rest collectable)
Any SRT8
E92 M3
E60 M5
Any MB SL and SLK
Mugen Civic (but not to the same degree as others on this list)
Evo VIII
WRX STi

Those are collectables NOW.

I think the Supra, Nissan 240SX, 300ZX, NSX, Legend, and the 6 speed CL will probably be collectables in 20 years or so.

Good question, Tireguy. I think musclecars from the late 60's early 70's are so collectible today because the guys that couldn't afford them when these cars were new back then can afford them now or used to own one and are reliving their youth. Maybe when these guys were 16 or 17 they remember working on their buddies Cuda or Mustang and the fun they had cruising or drag racing on the weekends. So will the hot cars of today be the collectible cars 25 years from now? GTO, STi, EVO, Integra Type R, Preludes, etc. How about the Grand National or Monte SS (remember the Monte SS and Grand Prix aero-coupes? Not many of those around anymore)? I'm seeing less and less of these around which should make them sought after in the future - supply and demand.

I hear you but you know there are going to be people that will clone it with SRT-8 badges and drop in a Hemi and try and sell it for the same price as the real thing.

I've seen a couple of 1st gen. "289" Mustangs with 4-bolt hubs (instead of 5-bolts used by the V8 cars).
A buddy in high school pulled the 340 - 4 barrel out of his '70 Challenger to drop in some 440 POS (as opposed to a 426 Hemi). He didn't change the front springs or shocks either, so the car was pretty raked from front to back. It snapped a driveshaft u-joint several months later.

My vote goes to the STI & Evo. If you could buy one of these new and keep it in storage you would defintely have a high valued collectors car. My rationale is like what others have already posted. High performance, high price & desire for the target market plus low volume will make them a hit in years to come.

I have a hunch that some of the rarer Accords could go for some money. Stuff like the EX coupe 5 speeds. Probably a cherry SE as well.

I have to agree with a previous poster about the Legends. I've already seen a few episodes of cribs where some rapper or sports guy had a 93 or so Legend. It was like their first car and holds a lot of senitmental value. Just how the Accord does for me and others I'm sure.

^ You hit it! As we get older we like the cars of our youth….the first date, first fast car, the first fast date car…you get the idea….In my late teens/20s we drove new GTOs, SSs, Hemi Cudas like you drive an Accord today…did not think about tomorrow…

Now we have settled in a little, look around and say Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhoooooooot!! that would be fun again….. It happens with every generation. So my guess is the hot cars of the 18-30 yr olds now will be the winners in 40yrs….

We drove fast for their times, muscle cars, myself: (all bought new) 67 gto, 69gto ram air III and a 72 GTO auto (slowing down). My pals: SSs, sleeper SSs with 350 hp 327s, etc…the fastest was my friends Hemi Cuda…saw the speedo maxed on that one…Oh, in those days there was No traffic at night in south Texas…the only ones we would hurt is ourselves and a fence post or two…

So the hot cars of tomorrow will be the hot cars of the youth today…throw in some big v-8s as they will go away and people in 40 yrs will be amazed we drove such powerful cars etc….on gas too! Oh, do not forget the holding cost when 40 yrs from now you figure up your profit.

My bet is any Two door V-8…Camaro, Challenger etc ..on the way…because these will be fast in a straight line and on a curve…AND look good…low production etc…the big exhaust pipe crowd will cross over to the torque and the smooth V-8…. My two cents…

Most posters are focused on exotics or high performance cars.

The question of the OP is "collectible". High performance and exotics are but a portion of the collectibles today.

A very large segment are the classic, bone stock cars that stood out because of their styling, their uniqueness, their popularity, their fun factor.

For example: '32 Ford roadsters, Model T's, 1950 Mercury, 1956, 57 Chevy are all highly sought collectibles.

Yes, memories that connect to cars are important as well. My candidates?

Solara Convertible (styling you can't ignore but can afford)
Camry (So many people had them and they were near perfect transportation)
3G TL-S (For the same reason and add performance and gadgets)
Lexus 460 (subtle luxury and near perfection from Japan)
Mercedes ML500 (iconic of the species SUV)
Ford Expedition (monster SUV)
Cadillac Escalade (Pimpmobile)
Infiniti FX45 (unique)
Hummer H1 (obvious)

That's my "other" perspective.

I'll leave the discussions for other cars to you guys, but the one car that is already a collector is the Integra. It'll be much more of a collector car than an accord 5speed.

Type R's with 20K+ miles still fetch well over $20K depending on their condition.

I could certainly see those cars being desirable years from now, but in no way investment grade collectable. All of those vehicles are and were mass produced, none were differentiated from any other in any special way (i.e. the crazy line item option packages that individual muscle cars came with), and none of them are bespoke, handmade cars.

Case in point, mint 1989 Corvette ZR-1s sold for up to $100,000 back in 1989. Many were shrink wrapped and put away as instant collectables. Superb examples today bring $30,000 (like a 1- condition red one at Russo and Steele for $30,000 and change recently), and ones with zero miles little more than that.

So, it depends on one's definition of collectable I think. Collectable as a desirable car? Sure. Collectable as an investment is something entirely different.

Totally stock, unmolested Type-Rs will always have strong prices. Curious to see what they are worth 30 years down the road; the stock of good ones may dwindle to the point that they may well see a significant increase in value.
