Went over an island.

hey guys, i was just wondering if i should be worried after going over the middle island half an hour ago. Half of the left cover shattered off from the front bottom of the car. Nothing was leaking and there was no dent or anything. The car ran the same as it was before. But i don't really know anything about cars, so i'm a little paranoid that there's something i didn't see when i checked. It's my sister's car btw..that's why i'm a little paranoid. FML

It's an 07 Honda Civic sedan btw.

I'd start with the tire, wheel and suspension components. Contact with a island, especially if it is raised around a curb, many will find that the suspension assembly is pushed back e.g. bent lower control arm and some have even done damage to the subframe. Quick check, take a tape measure and measure the distance between the center of the front wheel and the center of the back wheel on each side. Hopefully you will find that they are the same, but if different a deep pocket is helpful.

If you don't know your way around a car's suspension, have a mechanic look at it.

I would have it inspected. It may feel fine and drive straight, but you never know.

+1

Even though it may "feel" fine, the alignment could be off, delivering bad news in a few weeks that you need a new tire.

Yeah i did on the way home. It felt fine, as if nothing had happened. But earlier this morning, i woke up to find out that the car was towed back to the car dealership. My dad said he found some leakage on the driveway and he felt something wrong with the car when he drove it. Now we're just waiting for the dealer to call.

I'm scared my sister might make me buy the car off her. Then i will have to say goodbye of me having a TL. FML

Good question.

In that same vein...to remedy your issue is easy....

Back back over it the reverse direction you originally did frontwards and you should be golden!

This, you could have bent the rims, or knocked something loose in the suspension...

Am I the only one who has no idea what an "island" is when talking about roads? Is it the middle of a traffic circle or some other sort of curb?

He either ran over:

#1 - A median?

or

#2 - Or a sandy place surrounded by water with people laying out on the beach sunbathing.

Being we heard nothing whatsoever about bloody betty below the tires.....I think we are talking about a median in the roadway.

I vote for #2-Or a sandy place surrounded by water with people laying out on the beach sunbathing

So it was a median? I've done that once, nothing happened

He's talking about a "curb island." A piece of landscaping in a parking lot, surrounded by curb. If the car is stock height and you did this at very low speed, it's probably fine.

If you can afford it, get the alignment checked, but if its anything like the parking lot curb impacts I've witnessed, it was pretty minor and I doubt you bent anything important, so don't stress too hard.

Kinda looks like this:

you can just fit the width of your tires in the middle between the two "islands" and go through without slowing down much but you risk undercarriage damage especially if the car is lowered.

Well, the dealer said the transmission cracked and the frames were all bent. The dealer wanted 5 grand for a new transmission and i don't know how much the frames will cost. How much do you guys think it'll cost me in total?

So for sure, i won't be getting a TL anytime soon. FML lol

take it to another pro.

$5,000 for a new transmission?! Didn't know they went for so much thee days.

I'd bet that you just need a housing at most, not an entirely new transmission.

Don't you think you'd feel something if your car had both bent frames and a messed up transmission?

Get multiple quotes. Best advice I can give. Good luck, man.

I remember when my first Integra needed a new transmission, the dealer quoted me $2500. That was in 2002. Never thought a civic transmission would run $5K! Perhaps the 5K included other repairs?

Depending on the damage and costs involved, you may want to file a police report and contact your insurance company.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that my perspective was from a Canadian point of view. In Canada, at least in Alberta, a police report must be filed for any damage over a thousand dollars. In fact, insurance companies require a police report to actively investigate a claim.

trade it? If it drives well enough, maybe they won't look underneath.

It's the same in Ontario as well.

Yeah, but now it's someone else's problem, and if they find out, you're SOL.

The dealer would be responsible for it if they didn't catch it.
