First tank. 230 miles. 14.2 mpg. Virtually all city driving. Like one 5 minute trip on the freeway.
Hahaha. Hahaha. Ha.
Oh well. Really like the car

The FWD models are rated at like 18/25 I think. The 4WD model is 17/22.

Stage 1 Audi S5
Mom had a 4 runner as a company car and I loved being home and driving it but then they gave her a highlander. It was a much different ride and no where near as fun, plus it seemed like everything was made for big Americans. All the knobs were huge, seats were super wide, hell even the cup holders were huge.
Will say it has lots of room which is nice (wish my FX had more cargo space) and glad you like it. I don't know why but based on your posts here, I can't imagine you ever driving this or the Prius (I know it is your wife's but still)

Thing is those real SUV's (4runner, Jeep, etc) aren't conducive to my family needs. I could have never seen myself in a Prius or Highlander either...but highlander, its basically a big comfy car. Camry based...smooth, a little floaty, cushy, the V6 has a lot of power so it doesnt feel heavy at all. Very cadillac-ish. So, in that regards I kinda like it as a comfy cruiser.
The inside is much larger than the 4runner, and the 3rd row seats are kind of a must for certain situations.

The thin center seat of the middle row comes out and stores in the center console to create "passage" to the 3rd row. The passenger side also slides forward to create access. But we have two car seats...so that feature doesnt work.
Add the all new pathfinder to your list. It has a 3rd row and middle seats are design to open up to the 3rd row even with child seats in them.
Aside from not getting the greatest gas mileage...we like it a lot. The fact that is loaded changed my overall opinion on the vehicle. Black interior, which I always found rare on a toyota. And the Nav makes the the dash layout look nicer...I hate the way the non-nav versions look.
In the end it was all about getting a deal we couldnt pass on.

Hope the trip to Bakersfield was good. I'm betting you got low to mid 20's for MPG. Real world SUV will get 13-15 around town in city street driving. I think that's just how it is. Enjoy the utility.
Our mostly city driven MDX has averaged 14.8 Mpg over the past few years.

Evil Mazda Driver
My '04 Santa Fe routinely got 16-18 MPG in town and 22-24 on the highway. The 2010 could do 18-19 in town (20 if I was REALLY nice to it) but could tease 30 MPG on the highway, despite a rating for 26.
Mom's MDX? 15-16 city, 22-23 highway.

At least you really like the Highlander, and the important thing is that it meets your family's needs.
Hey, just trying to show the silver lining.

I filled up before heading back....had a little over half a tank and had gone about 180 miles (vs 130 miles on a half tank last fill up)
So, I averaged 19.3 MPG on the drive up....and I think I did better on the drive home. And this was with 3 adult and 2 child seats.
It was a nice cushy ride. Would I have enjoyed the Challenger more, yes. But this is turning out to be a great family hauler.
Gatrhumpy...still didnt take pics but my wife road in the 3rd row on the drive up...and both her and her sister rode there to the zoo and back.
My wife didnt hate it...but she didnt love it for an almost 2 hour drive. Said its noiser and bumpier in the back (a given) and her legs werent comfortable by the end of it.
Shorts trips like taking her SIL to the zoo....he SIL was fine. But I think most cars of this size with a 3rd row will be like this.
My wife had NO complaints riding in the 3rd row of a FLEX to San Diego and Back...but she didnt want one cause she felt it was too big (I liked it a lot) She also didnt mind the 3rd row of the Dodge Durango...but again, bigger vehicle.
