Well I finally got it. 56K beware

Well I finally broke down and got the 06 G35 coupe:
No navi on this one, just got the premium and aero package, and sirrius radio.
298 HP/260 torque

I love the rims and the new spoiler

I also like the fact it can play MP3's. no need to re burn them on seperate CD's

Of course its a blast to drive, took a couple of drives to get used to the new stick, (I went from 5th to 2nd a couple of times by accident , but now I think I got it down.)

Liquid platinum was actually one of my last choices in color, but now, I think its my favorite (other than black of course).

I thought the TL was powerful, but after driving the G coupe for a couple of days and getting back in the TL, it just doesn't feel as powerful anymore. The TL is still a much smoother ride, but that can be expected.

pics: (sorry for the size, but I took them with my camera phone, and didn't feel like resizing them).

at the dealership:

Im curious as to how you managed to go from 5th into 2nd by accident once, let alone multiple times?????

Congrats on the car.

Wouldn't your engine go boom if you went from 5th to 2nd? Unless you were doing really low revs...

I dunno. I guess I was used to the way the acura gearbox is set up. Eventhough 5th to 4th is just a straight down motion, the G35 gives you little room for error; very little pressure from the right and the stick would go into 2nd gear. I recognized it immediately, and mashed in the clutch to correct the gear as soon as I felt the car jerk forward because I knew I was in the wrong gear. The Acura seems to be a bit more forgiving as I never made that mistake in the TL.

Also the 06 G35's gearbox seems to be a little off center; it is further over to the right than the TL. Its hard to explain but it seems that in the TL if you want 1st gear you really have to move the stick over to the left then up or you'd end up in 3rd gear. In the G if you are going from neutral 1st gear, is almost just straight up. (see pics) That slightly new set up threw me off a couple of times.

TL 1st gear

G35 1st gear

TL neutral

G35 neutral

luckily I only made the 5th to 2nd mistake 2 times and my revs weren't high in either case.

Congrats on the car purchase. The chassis and the engine are top-notch for its price class. This was where the CL couldn't even compete. I was *this* close to buying a G35c in the past couple of weeks but held back. The new G sedan comes out this November. The new coupe is expected to be released in the spring.

I am surprised you've done the 5 -> 2 shift by accident. I had more problems with a smooth launch and the 1 -> 2 shift due to the abundant amount of torque with the VQ engine.

I don't want to rain on your parade but don't you find the steering wheel controls to be 2nd rate compared to the 3rd gen TL? The orange cluster gauge to be ... not quite up to par? Small things like the seat controls on the right side of the seat ... not quite intuitive. (I forsee mrdeeno to chime in any minute now ...)

I will give you a word of warning if you haven't figured it out already... when it rains, take your finger and wipe the water drops immediately above the door -- if you don't, water will get your seat and interior wet.

I think what he's trying to say is that the cd-player will play cd's with mp3s burned on them and since he usually has mp3s on cd's he doesn't have to re-burn them converted to play in normal cd players.

yeah there are some cheap touches on the car. particularily the way the door opens and closes, it feels/sounds kind of cheap. The steering wheel controls don't bother me that much though, though it does seem that the TL has better placement of the buttons. The orange cluster gauge is OK, but I do like the TL's cluster better. I like the G35's pedals better than the TL's. Overall the TL definetely has the better interior, but I have to say the G35 is more fun to drive....taking nothing from the TL of course. These two cars are my absolute favorite in the price range.

The above in bold, what was your intention by stating you "forsee" me chiming in? I am not an Infiniti "fanboi" that will defend everything "Infiniti", and I have myself bashed the G35 when it came out compared to the TL, and those opinions against the G35 remain the same.

1) I can't comment on the wheel controls in the G35. I have an M45, and it has different controls. On par with a TL? I think the controls on the M45 are ABOVE par compared to a TL, but what do you expect from a car that costs $20k more?

2) I can't comment on whether the seat controls in the G35 are "intuitive" or not. The M has the seats on the outboard sides of the seats.

3) I can't comment on the G35 gauge cluster except the color since according to the pics, the M's are differently designed. I have already stated many times that I like the "blue" that Acura uses better, but that's not at the top of my priority list whether to buy a car or not. So when you ask "on par?" are you asking about the quality? The design? Or the color? obviously, if you prefer blue, the orange lighting will not be "on par".

Word... Congrats!! The G35 is hella sick. I'm so burnt on the 350Z. Why anyone would buy one over a G35 is beyond me.

congrts on the car, if you are accidently getting into 2nd gear from 5th, try double clutching so at least you are at neutral and know where are you are. You can seriously fck your engine if you are close to redline and downshift to 2nd gear. Remember, NO REV LIMITER when you downshift.

meh. not to hijack the thread, but although I love the G35....it wasnt for me and I preferred the looks of the Z. That was the selling point especially since my Z costed about the same as a new g35c.

If I could deal with the 2 seater, I'd go for the Z - I agree it's better looking.

I always have liked the G35, a few little things I didn't care for but overall a great, fun to drive car. If the new G is under $40k loaded, I will more then likely be driving one.

thanks! Yep, in fact I never even noticed that the 06's had dfferent wheels and spoilers than the previous model. The G35's rims have always looked good, but the new ones look much better, same for the spoiler.

I'm still going to keep the TL. Though I really like the G35c, the TL being four doors and having a lot more cargo space, its a bit more pratical.

You probably shifted incorrectly in the G because the G has a short throw gear box while the TL doesnt. I love my G35....CONGRATS

I guess you may be right.

Those pics were from my camera phone...1.3 MP.

I have an old Kodak DC 280, but the batteries are always dead and I don't feel like recharging them all the time.
