I picked the S60R over the TL partly because I owned a Volvo and my GF has a '02TL. However, it's a topic that has been brought up a few times on different forums. It really depends on what you want/need.
Costwise, the TL is a better buy over the S60R. Handlingwise, the R got the TL beat. The TL has torque steer which I could never get used to (I hate driving my GF's TL after driving the R).
The R is a true sleeper since it looks like your average Volvo. I've crept up to a few Porsche owners
Ultimately, it's a matter of taste and budget. Both cars are great cars. I initially looked into buying the TL but no-one was/is budging on the price. They have a great $4500 lease rebate on the R and it was a no brainer for me.

I do have to say their is a big difference between the 02 and the 04.

The S60R is way too much money......I would wait until the next gen TL with SH-AWD.

I briefly looked at the S60R before buying the TL. The primary advantage to the S60R was its AWD, as well as larger interior. However, they are going for $40-42k in our area, and it wasn't worth the additional cash to me. Besides, I still think the interior & nav system on the TL is worth more to me than the AWD, but that is just a matter of personal preference.

There is definitely a big difference between the 02 and 04. I was just saying that I really didn't feel like having 2 TLs in the family (going to be soon hopefully!) and had an oportunity to pick up an R.
It's a matter of preference. IMO, if you are technophile, get the TL. If power is more your forte, get the R. At least that's how I see it.

After thankfully DUMPING my 99 S80-T6, I'll NEVER own a Volvo again. Something about putting over 6K in repairs after I hit the 50K warranty will do that to you. I sold it with 69K on it, paid 46K for it & only got 15K for it! I know that the 99's & 2000 were "bad" years for the S80, but come on! I had a Legend before, & I came back to the Acura fold. You just can't beat there long term reliability & fairly low cost maintainence.

Volvo :banghead:

Anyone who would discount Volvo doesn't know much about cars. I'm getting a TL and I love the car. But that doesn't mean all other cars suck and the Volvo is an extremely good car. A little pricey but come on....don't be such a goof...

Bought a TL over S60R because of 1) past Acura ownership experience 2) a cheaper price even though they were discounting the S60R almost $8000 off sticker. (I got 2k off the TL MSRP). The TL also shifted smoother and rode quieter. However, I think the Volvo would be a better value choice going up against a similar Beemer or Mercedes. In the end, TL vs S60R boils down to a matter of preference as to wants and likes.

Interesting thing about VOLVO (and many non-Japanese car companies). They inflate MSRP to make you think you're getting a better deal. They'll tend to negociate more because of the inflated MSRP, as opposed to HONDA/Acura/Nissan etc...where the "Spread" (difference between cost and MSRP) is not as big.
