Not an option to go without salt here because of the amount of snow. However, because the price has increased so much the last two years, our local authorities are using far less of it. Even I, the king of all-season tire driving, have considered buying winter tires.

salt a couple times a year won't kill your car if you spray the undercarriage. I've had a car for 13 years with road salt and no problems.
When I moved to Savannah from CT, one year it snowed like a half inch and the town shut down. No one knew what to do...
