To trade or not to trade
To trade or not to trade
So I recently came across this:

It's a 2005 with 38,500 miles and the asking price is $22K.
I've always loved the S2000 but when I was looking to trade in my MCS there weren't any good deals. I ended up getting the MX-5. It's a great car and its a blast to drive but the S2000 has always been somewhat of a dream car for me.
I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on a MX-5 for S2000 trade.
I have an '06 with 34,000 miles on it so I'd be paying for an older car with more miles. I do have a suspension kit, wheels and tires, intake, and custom vinyl on the Mazda and a plus side of not trading in would be getting to buy more mods instead of starting from scratch. But any kind of engine mods to get it up to a S2000 level would cost a good amount.

I'm going a little against the grain here, but I'm going to suggest this - figure out how much you value owning one of your "dream cars." If that means more to you than a few extra bucks, then it might not be a bad deal for you. Financially does it make sense? Probably not. But, as enthusiasts very little we do makes financial sense.
Case in point - me. I had a perfectly good, paid off, 2006 TL that was a great car. It made no financial sense for me to get rid of that car and buy a used M5; rarely do I regret my decision, though.

^ Thats a run of the mill family sedan (TL) for a high performance sports-sedan (M5) comparison. Thats a huge step up.
This is more like a side step, they are very nearly the same cars.

I hear you. But, we all have different "utility curves," so to speak. The OP may find much more value in owning an S2K than he does the MX-5, or than you or I would for either.

Handling-wise maybe a MX5 and S2k are on the same page, but performance-wise the S2K is on a whole 'nother level.
Yea, from an acceleration stand point, the S2k is on a different level. My point was its not like going from an entry-level FWD luxury sedan to a RWD, V10 powered, sports sedan with more electronic goodies in the gauge cluster alone then the TL as a whole
Not a bad description.
Yes to trading for an S2K. Very few people can follow their dream; if you have the opportunity, you should definitely go for it. That said, I hate silver cars, so I'd recommend another one that's a better color

The color really is a turn off. Blue or yellow would look so much better, I'd even prefer white.
This. Although the extra ponies would be nice, I doubt it would be a huge change. I don't plan on drag racing ever in my life and the Mazda is pretty much built for autoX.
HMMMMMMMM. That's an interesting thought.

CPO Boxster, NSX > S2k. I say keep looking though, they're overcharging for that S2K. Unless you really like that color, you better damn talk them down of couple G's off.
