I was out driving the Santa Fe today, relishing in the clear (but cold) weather having just picked up some lunch and going over to eat it and see if I could catch a train or two. While driving down 25th Avenue in NW Portland, I started to make a maneuver around a pedestrian refuge median. I turned the wheel right and as I started to turn it to the left, it went rock hard in my hands. It took every ounce of strength to avoid hitting a car parked on the side of the street. Seconds later, the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. I got check engine, oil pressure, and charging fault lights all at once and the engine stalled out. Fearful of engine damage due to critically low pressure, I popped the transmission into neutral and put the key into accessory and then back to on to maintain steering control. I limped it onto Quimby Street and popped the hood.

Everything seemed fine; the engine was still there, oil was on the dipstick and the serpentine belt was intact and taut. I had the car towed to the dealership just to be on the safe side and I'm there now waiting for the diagnosis. Needless to say, this has left a very sour taste in my mouth and I am seriously beginning to regret my choice in cars. If it continues on this path of destruction, I will be getting rid of it.

I will keep everybody posted.

So get this...car got to the dealer and started right up with no warning lights on. Tech scanned it and found NOTHING; no fault codes, no history, zip, zilch, nada. As far as the OBD computer is concerned, nothing ever happened. So now I am stuck driving a car that could potentially shut itself off at any moment. Gives ya a real warm, fuzzy feeling inside, doesn't it?

With my luck it will decide to do it next the minute I need full power to get out of somebody's way...

So far this car has really been nothing but trouble:

- Glovebox rattles
- Air conditioning just stops working for no reason
- Paint cracked and peeled off
- Radiator is defective/leaking

And now this...I'm looking to see what my local dealers have in terms of CR-Vs. Hyundai will be getting a strongly worded letter from me next week. I am done with their cars and will NOT be recommending them. I went out on a limb buying this car and having stuck my neck out, I know seriously regret it. As the great Doyle McCormack once said, "We will be very happy to see it gone."

It's hard to do, especially when you're set to take a financial bath, but sometimes it's just best to cut your losses. The writing seems to be on the wall with this one.

wow, it's terrible that you are having so many difficulties with this thing. I hope it gets fixed for you. I would say keep it for 2-3 years to possibly soften the blow of resale, but i don't know what resale is on these things after a few months or three years.

How old is it? Definitely trade it in ASAP. I just hope that the dealer finds out about this odd issue after you finalize the deal but before someone else buys it. I wouldnt want that out on the streets.

Had it just over 3 months. I've had more trouble with it in that period of time than my old car over 3 years.

It's a really nice car but unfortunately, it's just a bad egg. It's like having a beautiful wife but she's really a psycho blood-sucking, dick-chopping bitch.

You sure you don't have some loose battery cable? I've seen that with other cars that just randomly die. Then they start right up after the cable wiggles around slightly while coasting, hitting a bump etc.

sorry to hear you got a lemon, I remember you were pretty pumped when you ordered it. Must be a pretty big let down. I would try and work with the dealer on trading into a different one (if you haven't lost all faith in the brand) before looking at other manufacturers/dealers since it would probably be a big financial hit.

I went out earlier and circled the car while talking shit to it for a solid two minutes. I basically cussed it out and told it that it should be grateful that it got me as an owner and not some bitch who lets her kids spill their Cheerios and kick the seats. It made me feel better and it might just work...who knows.

sorry to hear that- we had a 03 sonata bought new that would have the transmission lock up in 2nd (automatic). The dealer replaced the transmission at less than 4,000 miles. We traded it for a 05 elantra with manual transmission. That car had over 100,000 problem free miles when we traded it for our '11 sonata. Your car sounds likes the 05 civic ex-se we owned. We traded that P.O.S. for our 06 tsx. There are good and bad experiences with every car brands

Depends on where you live, Lemon Laws are state regulated. Oregon uses the phrase "a reasonable number of attempts to repair the non conformity".

Portland, you should look up "Oregon revised statutes Chapter 646A, sections 400-418." That will let you knoe what you are up against.

Damn Andrew another issue? I don't know if I'd keep the car at this point. Once my confidence has been shaken I'd probably take the hit and trade it.

every automobile manufacturer has a bad car here and there. Cant blame every car as being bad though. With the problems you have had you should talk to the dealer and see if they will buy it back and let you pick out a new one.

I would go back the exact same spot and do the exact same maneuver and try to make the issue happen again. If you can, take a tech from the dealership out there with you and show him. You spent a lot of shekels on that car.

I don't know if I'd go that route yet. I would deal with the car a little longer and see if I can get it corrected under Oregons lemon law. Portland shouldn't take a bath on this, Hyundai should.

I would say that what happened to you could easily be considered a safety issue as well as impairing the use of the vehicle.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, everybody. I drove it out to a friend's house for New Year's Eve last night and that was a solid 40 mile round-trip with no problems. It's still on probation, though...don't get me wrong.

Trust me, I was weaving around stuff like a drunk driver last night trying to get it to happen again. I'm beginning to think there might have been a big ass air bubble in the fuel line because at this point, all it sounds like was the engine got starved for fuel long enough for it to stall.

But really, I'd look into trading it in. Imagine how deep you'll be in repairs once the car is out of warranty and stuff like this happens.

I am giving it one final chance because at this point, if I trade it in I'll have to go for a used car to get what I want. I have wanted one of these since they first came out in 2006 and to only have it for three months after waiting years to get one would be tragic. Besides...the warranty's got another 5 years and 55,000 miles left; 10 years and 95,000 on the powertrain.

Sorry to hear Andrew. If it is a problem car, I'd be inclined to continue driving it for some time yet. Get some value from it. If you trade it in now, you'll take quite the hit. Drive it, maintain it, and let it go after a couple years.

I had a similar problem with a 06 Mazda 6 I purchased 2 years ago with 30K miles on it. It was in the dealership 5 times in 5 months and in that time even received a new fuel pump.

One problem was that when it was cold out, the brakes would freeze up and I couldn't stop the car. The dealership was never able to replicate the problem and it never got fixed.

I didn't feel right after that, sold the car and moved on. I'm not going to drive something that could potentially not stop in an emergency situation.

This is why I won't buy a Hyundai. No matter how good people claim they are, you still run into this shit. I hope everything works out for you, I would highly suggest getting a different car at this point.
