Top Fuel engine damage (pics)

At this year's NHRA event in Joliet, the boys from the Fram Top Fuel team once again had some "aftermath" pieces on display at their promotional tent.

Looks like this one was case of piston failure with the remains of the rod doing the rest of the work. Apologies for the mediocre quality iPhone pics.

Unrelated, but how could I not snag a picture of this. Car ran in low 10's in the A Stock Automatic class (Stock Eliminator).

That billet block is so thick. Talk about catastrophic failure.

I am assuming piston head on the first pic, is that a retaining cable IN THE EVENT OF FAILURE that's attached? Wow.

That's a retaining cable in the event somebody at the promotional tent decides they want a free souvenir.

Aren't the pistons they use aluminum? Sheezus.

I've never seen a hole that big in a block before.

This may be a stupid question, but is there a such thing as a forged engine block?

The actual block itself? None that I know of. If there are, I'd like to know what it cost.

The 3rd and 4th pic are nuts.

Forging is essentially pounding a heated piece of metal with a hammer. In the case of commercial forging, the "hammer" is a specially shaped die powered by hydraulics. So since you're pounding on a piece of metal with a "hammer," you really can't forge something that has voids in it like an engine block does.

I would assume that the piece of billet that block was machined out of was forged. So that would be a forged, billet block.
