Since we're on the subject, you shouldn't start a sentance with a conjunction.

I'm sorry... I shouldn't start a what with a conjunction?

I looks like we could all use a little more schoolhouse rock.

BTW: Michael A,
Thanks, I weathered the storm quite well. I lost power for about 20 hours, and had only minor damage to the wood fence bordering my backyard. I've been a Floridian since birth (35 years) and have been lucky; I have never been directly hit by a hurricane (knock on wood). But this season seems to be a busy one. I put up the shutters for Frances, and I will be leaving them up until Ivan passes.

I am on the verge of moving down to either Deerfield Beach or Ft Myers depending on where my company places me but now I am really very hesitant due to the hurricane's.

Well, it seems we have strayed into ramblings...

Personally, I wouldn't let hurricanes play too large a role in any decision to relocate to South Florida. But it is an issue, that's for sure. We do what we can... shutters, generators, batteries and food supplies, etc.

I have been lucky thus far. But I do know many people whose homes were completely destroyed by hurricane Andrew back in the 90's.

Damn, there I go again... starting a sentence with a conjunction.

back on topic...

As far as stock cars go, I have seen the Lancer EVO tested 0-60 5.3 sec and Impreza WRX tested 0-60 5.4 sec. Awhile ago, late one night getting onto the highway from a stoplight, (almost no grade) a WRX obliged me to give her a go. This was a manual WRX with blow off valve, I have 5AT TL. We both started moving nearly exact same time when the light turned. He obviously got a great start due to AWD+Turbo and killed me in 1st gear, but the gap began closing. By the time we hit 60, my car nose was at the back edge of his drivers door and at 70 his nose was at the back edge of my drivers door. I dared not run any higher and slowed down. 0-70 I won though. Point being, if you have a 6MT TL and his EVO is stock, it will be close. Even if he beat you everytime, it would be a good race. I think that anything past 80 you will start creeping away.

THE BEST PART IS THAT AFTER YOU RACE, YOU GUYS CAN PULL OVER AND COMPARE EVERYTHING BESIDES SPEED!
TL EVO

EDIT: This guy got a really great start, so I assume he knew how to drive. Cars with turbo's feel incredible for about a 2-3K band as they have max hp and tq, I'm not sure if staying completly in the "turbo spooled" rpm range during a race is better than taking to redline...

Its like me saying the TL is a fancy Accord so those statements don't hold any water.

Not many people I know who are 20 yrs old can afford a $30K car and most people who own the car are NOT 20 yrs old.

What about somebody who is in their 30's ? I am not supposed to drive a TL or an Evo ?

I sold my Honda S2000 for the Evo because I needed something allot larger but did'nt want to give up any performance. I wanted something performance wise on par with my friends $85k 2003 911 C4S which I clearly can't afford.

Here's what'll surprise you:

The TL is a fancy Accord. We're in agreement. Take an Accord, slap on a tighter suspension, add some HP, load it with luxury car options, techno it up.....wham, it's an Acura TL. I'm not ashamed to admit that. It's what it is.

The EVO is a soupy economy car. Instead of layering on luxury, they layered on power, suspension, and some childish 60's musclecar staples like hood scoops and rear wings. For that narrow/niche market, its hitting its mark. Thosands of youngsters are buying these things as they anxiously await the release of The Fast & The Furious III. I see them hanging around the malls and gas stations, checking out each others rides. Sort of like a club. It's what it is.

Getting back to the main point, you cannot compare the two cars at all. No 40 year old executive dad would be caught dead in an EVO and no 20 year old surfer boy would want to drive dad's TL. When I was 19, I lusted after a 280Z and a Corvette, not my father's BMW. If you're over 30 and you're driving an EVO, I'd bet anything that you've got your Quiet Riot cassette blasting on your way to the hair transplant institute in your spandex leopard pants. You know the type.

your right my friend that has the EVO just recently learned how to launch it correctly, takes some time to get it down but makes a huge difference when you race from a dead stop. Have to admit though AWD is a beast. Curious Anyone around the Tri-state area looking to hit up EVO vs. STI this weekend in Englishtown, NJ?

In todays market most cars in any one manufacturers lineup is a derivative of another car in the lineup. If you have every driven an Evo and then a Lancer back to back it is completely different. In fact my Evo performs and feels closer to my friends $85k 911 C4S then a Lancer. I think of it as a poor mans 911. Their is NOTHING else I can buy for under $35k that gives me 9/10th Porsche 911 performance that is affordable.

I have also owned a TL and have driven Accords and the difference is very apparent.

The scoops and rear wings you mentioned are NOT their for show but are functional and no Quiet Riot cassette here .... TOOL on a cdrw MP3 format is what I listen too. I have plenty of hair and no leopard pants would ever adorn my closet.

this is my first post after watching u guys talk forever. i have a 6 speed tl. i raced an sti off a roll and i beat it. im not biased as the sti was my first choice. but the wife didnt letme get it cause its so cheap and blablablabll.. which i thank her for now. im young and have all the racing buddies that have all the cool cars. we all race eachother for fun. the cars range from s2k to kias to tls to evos. the evo and sti off a dead stop are animals and nothing can touch them but off a roll is completly different story with the evo being even worst than the sti. u can go to the evo forums and u will see them all complain bout how crappy the car is off a roll. so if i beat an sti which i know beats an evo i believe the tl will come out on top.. just letting u know my side of the story.

p.s great forum.. but not enough pictures!!!

Kids today ...... however he is verifying my theory that a '04 TL can be very competitive with an Evo or Sti from a roll or anything not resembling an all out drag race from a stop.

This is what I felt when test driving an '04 TL compared to my Evo.

The 300C gets no props, nor the EVO? The EVO is one of the most loved cars in the world! One of the reasons Mitsu FINALLY brought it here. It is an all out performance car. No, no luxury at all. It's not supposed to. The car can stay/beat Vettes, Porsches, etc etc. It is a bad ass car. The EVO wins comparison after comparison and is simply adored by the automotive press.
The TL is a blend of luxury and a touch of sport. 2 totally different cars.

And an EVO and TL are pretty much the same price. Its about what the person wants.

My Evo is pretty quick ... slighlty faster than my prior cars which included a Honda S2000 and a Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo but the kicker is the handling. You simply can do NO wrong with the car ... the handling is so amazingly stable and well balanced you can nail the throttle mid turn and the car just comes out with NO drama. It puts ALL its power to the ground in ALL weather conditions. I swear it is so fun to drive in the rain because you can almost break the tires loose at times. My brother tried that in his Mustang Cobra and partially ended up off the road.

However their is NO LUXURY in this car what so ever and after driving it for more than 1 hour I want to commite my self to an insane asylum. My old S2000 was like a Cadillac compared to this car. This is why I am selling it and buy a TL.

Huh? The EVO got a lot of props on the first page before the thread went sideways...

Road Rage is right! Smoked an STI with my "slightly" modified 93 Vette. The TL is a well balanced combination of Bling Bling, Performance & technology. Want kick !@# power? buy a Vette or a Viper. Besides, STI(s) and Evo(s) are freakin ugly...

They are manufactured in an attempt to get another $5k to $10k of daddy's pocket for 20 somethings who like to drive fast. Hood scoops? Trunk wings? Only a teenager would want one when he gets a bit older. Nothing wrong with that.

The TL is a luxury car designed for 40 year old dads who want a little zippy performance mixed in with their comfort features. You get a beautiful and tasteful body, lots of tech toys, plush leather, so why not a little HP and handling too.

Two people are flying on the same plane to the same destination at the same time. One is 20 years old and he's flying in coach. The other is 40 and he's flying in business class. They're both going fast and they're both flying for the same purpose. The difference is in how they're flying and why they spent the extra bucks.

BJ
21 and love competition. STi is not a "huge engines". 2.4L turbocharged. I know the fact NO ONE can alway be the fastest but it love of cars. You keep your story lol

I can't believe this thread even exists. TL is a luxury car and EVO is a sports car. Why would you compare a luxury car to a sports car? Would you compare a LS430 to a 911 Carrera?

I don't know how this thread turned into "which car is better," but the person who started this thread simply asked if he can take the EVO.

The answer is simple; it'll be close, but he'll most likely beat you.

Good luck and hope you beat him.

I owned a WRX previously and if you know how to launch it, 0-60 you will come out ahead of a TL. After that the WRX is no match - it is geared for rally racing (low end power) - although with a few mods like a boost controller, exhaust and up-pipe the WRX will be a very worthy competitor at higher speeds.

The STI and EVO will kill the TL in an all out drag-race - the reason some believe the TL has a chance with them from a rolling start might be due to the fact that when these cars are shifted out of 1st gear you must be at just about a dead stop before it will let you get back into first. I had to be barely rolling to get my WRX into 1st - all hondas/acuras i have driven allow you to shift back into first at higher speeds. I am not saying this is for sure the reason, it was just a thought.

I can't believe i got sucked into this too. I agree with the peeps that say they are two different cars - luxury vs. performance - If you want both get an M series BMW or an AMG Mercedes. (Well for that much money you can buy the EVO and the TL).

Points for you! BTW...the STI and EVO were tested on TOP GEAR ( BBC show )...it came near the top of their list of all time fastest cars. So you would be going against the Superman of small cars.

That, sir, is how the TL can smoke an EVO every time.

Remember, the goal of any automobile competition is to get one of these....

New Policies; some changes

It has been decided by the mods and Admins that threads which we call "TL vs. X" are more appropriate to the General Automotive Forum, Cars and Bikes section.

Those of us interested in this general topic will find a wealth of material over there.

Running conversations of "kills" and street racing stories, techniques will be at home in the Ramblings forum. Accordingly, the mods will be working to move those threads into their proper place.

We will leave a "Moved" notice and a posting to advise you of the move for each thread. If you have a special need or request to leave a thread in Third Generation for a short time, pass that on to a moderator or megamod and we will try and accomodate you.

We encourage you to visit those other sections often and familiarize yourself with their contents. Our goal is to make it easier for the members to find info on a specific topic rather than have all topics piled into one where it can be difficult to find.

We also welcome your input, feedback, and recommendations. We have the best forum going for Acuraphiles and we are always looking for ways to make it better.

Fraternally,
XP Ditor
