TL,TSX, Passat, or G35x

Hey just wanted some advice. I'm set on a TL but just want some advice from some actuall owners. My budget is 16k.
05-08 TL 50-80k miles
08 Passat V6 280 hp w/nav 20-30k miles
08 tsx 35k miles and less $$
g35x 60k miles

Just came from an a4 as why I wanted a TL but I can only seem to find ones with 70-80k miles in my area vs. a v6 passat with equal power minus looks with 50k less miles.
Which would be the best choice? Thanks.

I'd get another A4. Had a B7 and loved it. Then upgraded to an A6 and loved that.

I was never a Passat fan (except for the CC), probably take that off. Of the ones you listed I'd probably go either TSX or G35x. I'd also prefer a lower mileage vehicle verses higher mileage. Why spend $16 on a car with 80k miles on it when you can spend less for a car with half that? I mean, in a year or a year and a half you'd be over 100k miles.

Factoring all that in, I'd probably go TSX. Less money, half the mileage, and better MPG.

But that's me. What matters is what's important to you. You should also drive them all as that may factor in your decision as well...

Depends on what you'll be using the car for and if you'll only have that one vehicle. I currently have a 4G TL and am looking for a 04-08 TSX for the wife as opposed to a 3G TL because it gets much better mpg, also looks great inside & out and is overall more economical. if economical isn't on your mind and you want a fast car you can make faster I'd get the g35 (I don't like them). Personally I'd buy the TL.

Out of that list, I'd go TSX

I would go with the tsx, low miles is always good. Also the tsx doesn't have a timing belt so you don't have to worry about that.

but with the exception of the K23 motor in the RDX, Honda four cylinder motors are simply gutless.

I was sort of doing some similar car shopping (sporty sedan , <$17k) and became convinced that any move to acquire an NA 4 cylinder powered sedan weighing > 3,000 would drive me to suicide within a year.

I'm sure the TSX 6MT has sporty feeling, but then again so does the Hyundai Elantra MT. I'd take an 06-07 Accord V6 6MT sedan over the TSX 6MT any day.

The TL is a solid choice as is the G35 sedan. (Don't buy all the venom spewed in contempt of the first generation G sedan in these forums. It's a solid car, particularly the 05-06 models.)

Any of them, but the Passat. You will blow through your budget on repairs....

If you can get a TSX with that mileage for less that $16K then that is what I would go for.

TSX is probably the best option. Awesome gas mileage, comfortable, and some nice features. But it is gutless in Auto form. I prefer my 03 TL-S over my previous 08 TSX base.

Less miles and less money = TSX. Easy one there, just get it checked out (maybe an accident vehicle).

I'm in a very similar situation right now... I have put those cars on my list as well as a Legacy GT and a Fusion AWD SEL. Both of those can be had for around 17.

I'm currently in a rental Fusion AWD SEL w/out nav and I wouldn't purchase it. AWD system is poor at best, interior panels on doors can be removed by hand and merging/passing power is low. Only good things I can say about it is the lack of power incourage slower driver, has good mpg and its spacious.

For what its worth, recently got my 07 G35X and am Loving every second. Power, handling etc.

Oh, and its got a timing chain just like the tsx, no need to worry about belt replacements

I think it depends what you are looking for in a car, but this is what I know about these cars. the G35 is the most fun to drive out of the bunch. down side is it is terrible on gas and the engine is not as reliable as a honda product, the Passat is good but it is very expensive to repair, and even though it has 280HP it is not the best performer. the TSX is the most reliable, and decent on gas, the TSX handles good but the engine performance is not as good as the rest. the TL is sporty, handles good and has good gas mileage on the highway. however you will get about 18-20mpg in the city but 30 on the highway. however the engine is much more reliable than the G35, and parts are cheap.

The Infiniti/Nissan VQ Engine is far from unreliable, not sure where you got that from. It's won numerous awards and continues to be a solid engine. I agree with you on the MPG's with the G35, if you have a heavy foot, you will pay dearly. City Driving I get about 16 MPG, highway is about 22-24 MPG.

You can't go wrong with a TL or a G35. Those would be my two choices.

How is the engine not as reliable any data to support your claim?

Hapa, you and Will beat me to it.

The Infiniti G35/37 is as reliable as ANY Honda product. Some people need to lay off the sauce that is the Honda Kool Aid.

Not sure what overboost is talking about. Not only is it just as reliable as any other Japanese brand, but it continues to win awards for design, performance, etc. It may be bad on gas, but that's about it. I would buy any car with a VQ engine in a heartbeat without thinking twice...

The G35 is a great car but I had a maxima with the vq engine and was concerned with the service bulletin below. I'm not saying they all do it but if happens out of warranty it's a really expensive fix. Also, you need to change the CVT fluid every 30k and it's about $21.00 a quart and takes about 11 if you DIY, if you go to the delear is about $350.00.

Never owned any Nissan/Infiniti products, but so many of my friends do have been driving G35/37s. I've never heard of any problems in relation to its engines.

All they complain about their cars is that the exhaust sound gets old pretty quickly.

Neither my 02 Maxima, nor my 05 Murano nor my son's 05 Alti 3.5SE ever had that issue.

Back on topic, I like all of the suggestions with the exception of the TSX.

I've no complains about my 07 maxima, I got rid of it because I needed more space. Now, my 07 frontier was another story and if you go to clubfrontier alot of people are complaining about the VQ engine. Don't get me wrong I'm not bashing Nissan I like there products but since they have been owned by Renault I thick their quality is't not as bullet proof as it was.

Isn't TSX much better than TL in terms of gas mileage?

I had 3G TL for 5 years and I always had this perception.

In the G sedan? The exhaust is fairly muted. The coupe is slightly louder, but still not exactly loud. I've had my G35 for over a year and have never been annoyed by the exhaust sound/drone.

I'd go with either the TL or G, based on my preference of performance over the efficiency of the TSX.

I guess it depends what kind of driving you do. Apparently the 3G TL gets great highway mileage for a six.

^ it absolutely does. Averaged 30mpg with that car.

I'm close to 28mpg with my G though and a large step up in terms of performance. The trade off is certainly worth it.

Really? Maybe it's just my friends. They have all kinds of the variants; G35 Sedan/Coupe; G37 Sedan/Coupe; 350/370Zs. Almost all of them changed out the exhaust with something aftermarket because the stock sound became a little annoying after couple months of ownership.

Yes, my 3G TL was getting some awesome highway mileage, but the city was a bit disappointing. The car is not a torque monster at all, but it was getting some average/below average gas mileage.
