Tint Quote

Hey Guys

I'm planning on getting tint on my G tomorrow and just got a quote from a reputable shop near me.

35% Tint all around (Excluding Windshield) with 3M High Performance Film - $185

35% Tint all around (Excluding Windshield) with 3M Ceramic Film - $300

About 2 Hours labor and he a has a laser film cutting machine on site. He is a friend of a friend so supposedly I'm getting some sort of deal.

Also I have existing Tint on my rear windows that I need removed (rear doors and rear window) he states he can remove them first for an additional $60 or tint over them if its in good condition. The current tint the previous own put on is very light (About 50%-60%) so putting 35% over that would bring me to about 15% in the rear and %35 up front (Don't think I want it that dark)

Prices sound about right? Will I be OK with the High Performance or should I go Ceramic?

tint over tint? that's the first time i've ever heard of such nonsense! doesn't sound very professional to me at all! and those prices aren't any deals by any standards. Every single car that I've ever owned were tinted to some degree with either Llumar or Solar Guard tint films with lifetime warranty and have never had any peeling, bubbling, turning purple or fading prematurely. I have no experience with 3M so can't comment on its quality. $185 seems about right but $300? Better be bullet proof for that amount! $60 to remove old tint sounds about right as well!

He's going to charge 60 for removing it? Last time I had to remove my tint for fix it ticket, the installer took about 5 seconds taking it out. It's really easy to do if the tint is not too old. And I'm assuming yours isn't too old.

Find couple more tint shop

And get the HP one. It doesn't really matter anyway.

I paid $350 for ceramic all the way around (except windshield) on my 335 coupe which has 2 less windows than your G sedan, so I'd say either you're getting a good deal or I got ripped off.

I only went ceramic because there were rumors that metallic tint would interfere with BMW's Comfort Access system (basically like a keyless entry/start feature). If you don't have anything like that I'd think you'd be fine with the standard tint.

All the shops I've been to around here charge for tint removal. I paid about $75 to have the tint removed from my old CL.

I paid like 180 for all windows with ceramic. And I don't quite remember but my installer said the same thing about Navigations don't work properly with this tint or something. It's been too long.

Maybe it's just los angeles thing. There are a lot of tint shops here. Several of them always try to rip off on noob customers.

Removing the old tint from the door windows takes 5 seconds.... not the rear windshield though. If you just rip it off, it'll take off the defroster lines as well.

This^.

I paid $220 for all five windows with Llumar Metalized from a shop I trusted. The lifetime warranty with Llumar has to be honored by any Llumar dealer and that was good enough for me. I did not experience any reception loss for AM, FM, Nav, or cell phone with the metalized.

Oh, and tint CAN be put on top of old tint. The shop that did mine had a few cars with doubled up 15% for the limo effect. As long as the bottom layer is immaculate, there shouldn't be a problem, but I would make sure the warranty will still be intact if the bottom layer bubbles.

I have seen prices vary region to region too.

I did, here is the place I'm talking about

http://www.yelp.com/biz/tintmax-flus...ry:auto%20tint

My buddy and the owner are friends and I've passed by once or twice and he always has high end cars in there. Ferrari's and Porches are not a rare sight here from what I hear so this is why I am thinking he has to be good.

The review for $175 on yelp has me a bit confused lol, but perhaps the guy on yelp got the cheaper tint (non 3M) which the guy also offered me for $135 but said he doesn't recommend.

Yea Im thinking its more for the rear window and the defroster lines. Perhaps there is more involved

I have keyless entry and start as well as a full tech package....going to have to see if my car has any issues with certain tint

I don't know, I had my old CL tinted with 3M tint for $100 and my FX front windows tinted for $70 so I think it is a bit high but then again, Florida has a ton of shops and lots of competition.

^ call these guys up.

I have heard of tinting over the factory tint in SUVs (according to my tint guy the factory stains don't block the heat all that well), but that's it.

I have a guy out here who does great tint jobs, non-metallic..je did my challenger and my prius...I think 130 cash for each.

When I got a ticket for the prius he charged me 10 bucks to remove the tint...said he only charge me 45 if I wanted to re-tint it later.

Now...ceramic tint...that can get pricey...reputable places here wanted 500 bucks for huber optik.

The place I go to will do llumar ceramic for 320, but they constantly have coupons that drop about 60 bucks off of that. So I don't know if your friends prices seem that friendly.

It could be because of the volume it's done in down here though. You rarely see a local car without some form of tint whether it's a 20 year old Pontiac Sunfire or a new BMW.

Thanks for everyone's help! Really appreciate it!

Looks like I am locked in for a 4:30p appointment tomorrow. I know I could probably get it for a bit less elsewhere but after calling him back and haggling a bit, he offered to remove all my old tint and install the new tint for $220 even.

The other plus is that he is a friend of a friend and he has be open for over 6 years at the same location and I know if there are any issues I can go back anytime.

I'll throw up some pics once its done.

Also, I think I will possibly put 20% on the rear and 35% on all 4 doors instead. We'll see.

They also get good reviews on local forums

Flat Fee of $120 for a Full Size Sedan. Any normal Sedan $120 Lifetime Warranty whatever percentage. $180 for high quality tint sounds fair. Nothing more then that.

No decent tinter I know would ever say this...

You want non metallic tint to avoid issues with electronics. Ask that guy what tint he is goign to use.
Mine was 15% ceramic all around & it was $250.

Good stuff.

FWIW I have 20% on the back window and 35% on the sides for my G. I had the same amount on my TL as well. I think it looks really clean.

So what is everyone's thought on getting the top part of the windshield tinted as seen here? Not sure if I like it.

The top part of the windshield isn't my taste.

I saw a shit ton of cars with the top part of the windshield tinted in Asia though.

not a fan of tinting the top of the windshield. looks tacky to me, kinda like those banners that people put on their cars.

Just got back from getting my tint just now, he couldn't squeeze me in the other day.

All I can say is that this guy does awesome work and it looks great! I got 35% on all 4 doors and 20% on the rear window. It's night time now and I'm happy I didn't go darker. I can hardly see inside so i'm happy.

By the way this is the tint they installed

I'll see if i can get some pics up soon
