Is there a device that tells you if you're going too fast?

In a 1995 525i, you can set a speed where it beeps if you exceed it. I can do that in my laptop's GPS program as well. Is there a device that can do this for me? I find myself speeding too often and I think that a reminder could really help.

The problem with this "theory" is it requires all of them to be used at the same time, the fourth to a lesser degree, I think that's asking a lot from people today.

Get a $150 car GPS, it'll probably do that.

Or get a new car, my A4 has a speed limit warning feature those who can't follow steps 1-4 above.

Well, it doesn't beep. More like a 'woop-woop.'

I hear they're everywhere.

Our GPS has it. We have it disabled b/c we actually use the speedometer... but it is an available feature.

Just for the record, I was not trying to be a jerk with the OP. My response was more along the lines of a little humor. He does have one point. I'm sure many of us have happened to look down at our speedometer and see we were going significantly over the limit from time to time. This happened to me yesterday. So I am a firm believer in using my cruise control and use it often.

This is the best device there is. There should be NO need for a dummy device to warn you you are speeding. That should be left your eyes that should glance at your gauges every 15 or seconds.

This will tell you when you're going too fast:

Of course, by then it's too late.

LOTS of highway miles. I use the Cruise Control at +5 or +7.

=p

I'm sure there are things about you that we can all pick on, but I'll choose not to do that.

Sometimes when I'm tired, it is more difficult to exert self-control.

And I don't think common sense is that common. What if my body tells me that driving fast feels good? Isn't that common sense?

The type of common sense you're referring to is something you learn. People don't automatically posses what you call common sense.

Let's say that driving fast can result in these possibilities. Feeling good, getting a ticket, and/or harming someone. How would one determine the actual result? You either learn by doing or learn by being taught. You can't naturally know what will happen. However, one can use inductive logic to arrive at a probable conclusion.

Anyway, common sense is based on your environment. Common sense to one person may be nonsense to another.

But I do agree with what you're basically saying. But then why do people do anything wrong? Why can't we all be perfect people? We can't. So that's why I'm admitting that I need help and I'm seeking it out.

We all need to understand that we all have our weaknesses and keep that in perspective before making fun of other people (and I'm just saying this in general - I'm not directing this at anyone specifically).

And isn't there something in the posting rules about keeping the discussion relevant?

Can't you set the speed it alerts you at and turn it off?

Need more body parts

You need to use one of your feet as well. It'd be nice if we had laser guided cruise control system. Then I might actually use it.

So how do you use your radar detector?

How do you use your radar? Do you drive at the speed limit and then check your speed when it detects a radar? Or do you speed when you drive normally and then slow down when it beeps?

=) But only too late if you're trying to avoid getting a ticket

This is what happened to me the other day, however I fully deserved the ticket. I was merging onto the highway and I decided to pass this guy to merge in, but by the time I merged, I had exceeded the speed limit and there was a police officer close by and he got me while he was moving with his Stalker DSR 2X. I know, I shouldn't have done that.

BTW, what are the chances of outrunning one of these chargers? Not that I would ever try it, but I've always wondered how much more powerful your car has to be to easily run away. I hear a Viper might work.

I normally drive between the speed limit and 5-10 over. Depending on the road.

Regardless of what speed im going, when the radar beeps, i then still check it.

My point is, if you cant take the time to glance at your speed every few seconds like you should (just like checking your mirrors) to be aware that you are speeding, what else arent you seeing? The car next to you? the kid about to cross out in front of you? The school bus stopped? Point is if you are to tired to be able to do the BASIC things that you should be doing behind the wheel maybe you should take a cab or find someone to drive you instead of endangering the others on the road.

Well, you've admited you have this problem. They say that's always the first step.

At the end of the day, you've got want to improve; to stop or change your behaviour. What gives your that motivation might be different than what motivates someone else.

I used to get a speeding ticket about once a year (give or take). Then I got one four or five years ago and it was a fine plus a hundred bucks for a lawyer to plead it down to less than 10 mph over the limit (to keep it off insurance).

Then about 3 years ago, maybe 4 now, I got caught in a "speed trap" and was charged $160 ($110 costs + $50 fine) for 36 in a 35. You read that right $160 for 1 mph over.

I decided after those two that I simply could not afford the dollar costs. That "speed trap" was an anomoly. BUT on the highway, I keep it between 5 and 7 over the limit and use the cruise control whenever I can. I haven't had a problem since.

BTW - there is a video around somewhere of an old beater Buick or Dodge out running a Trooper in a Charger in South Carolina (iirc). The beater wasn't faster, he just didn't give a shit when it came to intersections and traffic and got clear when the trooper got held up crossing an intersection.

Radar Detectors

I use that guideline as well. Do our speedometers read a certain percentage too fast?

I've always wondered about driving with radar detectors. I thought that I might just get used to the beeping since I always thought it would give lots of false alarms and I don't want to pay a fortune for a top rated unit.

ok

My point is that the more tired I get, the more difficult it is to drive near the speed limit. The cause of this is true for everyone. Why do people get cranky when they're tired? It's because they can't control their selfish desires. Their true self becomes more evident.

Obviously, ideally, one should be well rested. But come on. You know that can't happen 100% of the time.

This might be the closest thing you can find.

http://www.navalert.com/store/produc...cat=306&page=1

"The detector will give an over-speed warning in close proximity to the camera if exceeding the speed limit, but will automatically mute when within the speed limit"

addictions

That's like asking a smoker why he smokes (one that knows they should quit) or a fat person why they eat so much or a drug addict why they won't quit or a bipolar why they act so weird.

The beep is that extra push that enables me to do it right. I hear the beep and I think to myself, "oh crap, I'm going too fast!" so I slow down. I can even take an extra step and make an agreement to myself to abide by my warning beeper.

LOL at this thread!

SouthernBoy (as usual) said it best.

I have the same addiction to speed but I do so judiciously and safely (empty roads mostly). In my 20 years of driving, I've received three speeding tickets, and each time I simply wasn't paying attention to obviously placed police because I was tired. So I don't speed when I'm tired, either.

No speeding tickets in the V, so far. It is truly the ultimate in stealth.

And my point is is if you know your speeding like you admitted tired or not you KNOW you are doing it and should have the anility to not do it. If your so tired that you cant stop from doing it do us all a favor and pull over and stop.

Also that is what Cruise Control is for, to help MAINTAIN the same speed.

Having a device that beeps at you wont keep you from speeding any more. You still have to get to the preset speed for it to warn you then YOU have to slow down. Its the same as using YOUR eyes to look at the speedo ever 15 sec or so, you realize your speeding you slow down.

Quick Reply: Is there a device that tells you if you're going too fast?
