Theft deterrence

someone broke into my wife's 08 accord a couple months ago, broke the door lock and ignition switch but didn't drive the car away.

i was parked at a public transit station parking lot because it's pain driving into the city so we took the subway.

cost me 1000 out of pocket for the deductible, actual bill was about 1800 after towing and repairs.

kind of have me a little spooked now. what do you guys think about a theft deterrence device like the club?

i know a determined person can get by it, but it's about being just slightly harder to steal than the guy next to me. only an idiot (which thieves may be) would choose to go for a car with a club vs nothing, even if it only takes 15 seconds to get through, right?

I can't remember the last time I've seen one.

Would it help? surely.

A club won't hurt, but you need to be consistent in using it. I'm more interested in if the alarm sounded- I would work on bolstering the alarm first.

i was told by the dealer that if they beak the door cylinder, the alarm won't sound. typically, the alarm sounds when they smash a window, then unload the door through the window while the security is engaged, then the alarm will sound. but they way they did it, it doesn't seem like the alarm sounded

i would only use a deterrent in sketchy places like the subway station, i don't usually feel unsafe. lived in toronto for decades, never crossed my mind that someone would try to steal our car.

any of you have similar concerns? felt necessary to use a club or something of the like?

Which Go Station?

I know people who've had their cars broken into at these stations.

A shock sensor would help in your case.

I used to have a club for my Jetta. Used it for about 2 months, then got sick of it.

Was there anything about the car that stood out? Mods, stuff inside the car?

x3 on an alarm with a shock sensor, or something similar. Most common thieves are opportunistic, even that little flashing blue light will deter the majority of them walking past your car.

it was at Kipling station in Toronto.

nothing really stood out about the car, it's an 08 V6 with spoiler but it's still you're run of the mill black accord, i see them everywhere. don't even think they had navi available for that model year. baby seat in the back!

what's a shock sensor, how does it work? attached to the window?

i figure thieves will pick the easiest targets, so any kind of deterrence will cause them to look for another car. that's my reasoning for a club, for deterrence in specific locations. i wouldn't feel it necessary in all places, but now i feel like subway stations are pretty sketchy.

^ What good exactly would that do when your car's being broken into and you're not even close to it?

I dont know how that is going to work if OP leaves his car at a park station in order to catch the subway to the city. Wouldnt it require him to actually be there?

Deductible is typically chosen by the policy holder not the insurer. Higher deductible = lower premium. It's a roll of the dice.
