I give Tesla credit, going against the grain may end up paying off for them. With some of the trusty old names of the automotive world on their knees it very well could create the opportunity for a new luxury domestic manufacturer, in particular if the economy starts to bounce back and people have money again.

It's certainly a beautiful car. However, I am very skeptical that it is possible to produce a large sedan for half the price of the $100k roadster only two years after the introduction of the roadster. A gasoline powered sedan with the features of the Tesla S would cost around $50k, so I find it very unlikely that a fully electric sedan would cost the same. It is also curious that the $50k price was announced early during the development of the S. Personally, I think the low price is an unrealistic goal that is being used to increase publicity for the next couple years.

Keep in mind the electric motor for these cars weighs about 50 pounds, and is much simpler to install and implement in the car then an engine/transmission. The expensive part are the batteries/charging, both of which are getting better and better almost every month - which in itself is a problem for a production vehicle. My point is that a huge expense on current vehicles is the engine/transmission and integration of it as a whole into the car. Most of the cost of this vehicle is the R&D(much like the roadster) thankfully the company has some deep pockets behind them and if they can create a sustainable long term business model and spread the R&D costs over say 10-20 years they will be fine and all those who invested in the company will be very wealthy. Assuming projections are not short cycle I think they will be able to cross the next big chasm they face.
