Television: Top Gear China

I didn't see this posted anywhere, but China will get their own version of Top Gear.

http://www.torquenews.com/109/top-ge...ts-green-light

The Chinese automotive market is a rapidly growing beast that is consuming automakers and the producers of the hit show Top Gear are jumping in on the action with a new version for the People’s Republic of China.

The report comes from TheTycho, who spoke with China’s CCTV, who confirmed that Top Gear China has been given the green light for production. The hosts have already been selected and filming is underway in Beijing. Lets just hope they don’t steal any footage from other countries this time.

Top Gear China will follow in a long line of watered-down automotive programs that originated with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May in the United Kingdom. Australia was the first to get their own version of the program, followed by Russia and the United States. While each has not come close to the popularity of the original, all three have interesting characteristics that make them unique.

Although, with that being said, each has struggled to survive. It’s not the cars that make Top Gear great, it’s the hosts and replicating that is very difficult to achieve. The three men responsible for Top Gear USA have had a rough go of it, always being compared to the big three in the United Kingdom and there is doubt that the Chinese trio, if they are a trio, will be scrutinized the same way.

One has to wonder why the BBC just doesn’t stick with one show and make it dominate the world, instead of giving each country a version that simply isn’t as good. Nonetheless, being the car lovers we are, it’s hard not to get excited for a new Top Gear.

Get out the books; it’s time to learn Mandarin.

Well at least Top Gear USA will now become the 2nd most popular show out of the series. The others suck.

Meh.

If I operated a show that was popular worldwide like TG, I wouldn't miss the market with the largest number of consumers on the planet. So from a business standpoint, WIN! From a personal standpoint, meh until we see the product.

In host news, Chinese producers have taken a cue from their car industry in trying to duplicate the success of the hosts of the original.

Here is Top Gear host James May getting to know his Top Gear China counterpart:

I think the trick is finding a Stig. They'll definitely have to import one.

if it is a good show i wouldnt mind seeing it subbed, but i bet a lot of the little nuances of the humor would be lost in translation. Some of the british humor still goes far over my head. Its about as relevant to americans as [things relevant to britain] are to [things relevant to britain]

I don't speak a word of Chinese, but those hosts look very dynamic and seem to be having a great time. The Caddy vs. donkey grinding contest was funny!

Someone sub that stuff, I'd love to be part of the excitement!
