Speeding Ticket Cameras (?)

Anyone know if we, here in the U.S. (or California), have these things? All I know is... just now, going home to my parents' house... I made a turn at a corner... I gun'd it and was going around 60mph (speed limit was 50), and I saw (at the corner of my eye), some flashes went off... I'm freakin' out right now cuz I can't afford to have ticket... I know they have'em in Europe but this is gonna suck if that was some kind of speeding ticket camera

Speeding cameras, don't think they exist in SoCal. In fact, I think California law prohibits the use of photo radar.

Most likely, it was an intersection camera that thought you were going straight. I've been hit by a couple of those, but never got the letter in the mail. Then again, if it is an intersection that doesn't allow right on red, then you might be getting a picture in the mail.

okay, so my curiosity was killin' me... I went back to that spot and all I saw were some trees... those cameras are usually pretty big...

I think this is what happened... yes, the intersection where I turned on has cameras... lots of them. No, I didn't run a red light... in fact, it's a "NO TURN ON RED" corner. I waited, the light turned green... made the turn... gun'd it... that's when I (thought I) saw the flashes... I think it took pictures of someone else behind me and there were reflexions of the flashes or something... and perhaps thats what I saw....

They have intersection cameras that will nail if you didnt come to a complete stop BEFORE the fault line at a red light when making a right.

But speeding ticket cameras....phoenix.

I dont believe there is any law barring them in Cali. I just finished traffic school where we talked about all this shit.

They've got speeding cameras in DC. They're usually in low-speed (~35mph) areas to catch people going fast through slow roads. They also park cop cars in corners and have a cop sitting there with a button that takes your pic if you run a red light or don't stop at a sign.

Speedtrap web site

Not sure if this will help anyone, however, it might save a life.

Take a look at this web site.

Good luck.

There are red light cameras in Houston. But around here apparently it is just a civil infraction and not reported to the DPS.

Somebody should come up with this device that deploys a curtain over your license plate when you hit a button inside your car, and retracts it when you press it again. Install it over your rear plate and bam! Speed through those cameras without a care in the world lol

I think there was a product that got banned cuz it actually worked really well... It was just a simple spray... it was like some kind of clear coat... you'd spray a couple layers of it over your plates and when those flashes go off... the plates become extra reflective thus causing the developed pictures a brite rectangular object (the license plate), making it impossible to read the numbers

a disapearing license plate isn't anything new. There have been flip down types for years now

Yeah, i've heard of stuff like that but seemed like more of a scam than anything. It would suck if you used it and it actually showed that you used it once your picture gets taken LOL double fine!

They recently put up cameras next to a high school in my area, and like 2 weeks later both cameras were destroyed

Same here in Arizona. The speed cameras are actually in Scottsdale, not Phoenix, and the intersection camera's are all over the place. The funny thing about the speed cameras is that the regular commuters like myself know exactly where they are, so you slow down to the speed limit at the camera but once you're by them you just go as fast as you want. They also have signs about 300 feet before the cameras warning you that there are speed radar cameras ahead. There's also way less highway patrol cars taking radar around here now so it's actually made me drive faster. I see them flash everyday on the way home from work because there's usually some out-of-state speeder that flies by them. I actually cheer the cameras on when I see someone speeding up to them and voice an audible "awe that sucks" when the flash doesn't go off and they don't get the ticket. They also have these white police vans out here that they'll park on the side of a road that has cameras and a flash on it. I've actually gotten nailed by one of those once when I first moved here. Again, once you know what they look like though you just slow down for them and then continue on your way at what ever speed you usually travel at.

Yeah, they're all over the place in my area as well. Like you said, most commuters know where they are and slow down. I have seen them get a bunch of people though...Actually, on my way back home one night, this BMW 3 series kept trying to get me to race him on this road that actually has two speed cameras along it. Anyways, he kept tailing me and finally decided to change lanes and gun it, thinking I would chase him. I guess he didn't catch on that I wasn't going above 45 so he kept going. He must have been doing 80 or 90 when I saw this huge flash light up the area. I couldn't stop laughing, and turned at the next intersection. Thats a nice $250-300 ticket for him

Nice one! I know, it's weird, because obviously it's not fun to get a ticket, but there's something so satisfying to see someone else get one when you're aware of what's about to happen. The other thing you'll see a lot is people that realize last second that there's a camera and they'll slam on their brakes. I'm just waiting for the day that someone does that and then gets rear ended by the car behind them.

Hmmm...interesting, since the Vehicle Code 21455.6 specifically states:

"(c) The authorization in Section 21455.5 to use automated enforcement systems does not authorize the use of photo radar for speed enforcement purposes by any jurisdiction."

So unless the law has changed recently, technically it's against the vehicle code to use speed cameras to enforce speed limits.

I'm guessing that's a California Code? All I know is that in Scottsdale there was a big debate between the City of Scottsdale and the State of Arizona regarding the speed cameras. The City of Scottsdale was granted permission from the state to conduct a "study" using the speed cameras and at first they were only using them to warn drivers of their speeding, but then the City of Scottsdale decided they were effective and proved to the state that they reduced the amount of traffic accidents significantly, so I believe the cameras are now state operated and maintained, and you'll have a nice photo of yourself behind the wheel waiting in your mailbox at home if you go by them +11 over the posted speed limit.

Yea that should be california. There was a big deal about it here in SJ because SJPD was using speed radar vans to stop speeders in residential neighborhoods. A couple people took them to court and since there was no officer present who wrote the ticket it didn't hold up.

THAT was story we were told. I remember now. OK, so I forgot about the illegal thing.

Before creating a new thread, figured I'd search and see if there was anything on this.
My buddy got one of these because he's always fishtailing his Mustang and running lights and stuff. I told him it was a dirty thing to do to get one of these. Plus, I bet the fine would be pretty crazy if a cop actually noticed you were running a plate hider.

Over time though, I've been in a few situations where a car slows down when making a left or crossing a yellow light and leaves me to be the last car that is running the light. I mean, my fault for pushing the limit but I don't want to get nailed for something stupid like that. I have sunpass so I pay my tolls.

What do you guys think? Anyone have these?

The town around my college recently got four mobile speed cameras that they move around every week or two. I guess they get away with putting them wherever they want because all the speed limit signs around here say "Photo Enforced" underneath. In five months, they made $2.4 million from the citations. I have friends that have been hit multiple times on the same day because they didn't see the flashes going off.

At least the citations are only $40 and don't go on your record or anything. It's essentially the same as a parking citation (it's not a ticket), because they can't prove it was you speeding.

RFIDs

I suspect some states will mandate RFIDs for cars to make the plates unnecessary for the cops.

I think I hit one trying to get out of DC. Was heading north and the road opened a touch, so I got up to about 45 and *flash*.... The suck part was it was a rental, so now I wait to see if it was me or the other lane (where the flash came from).

where did this happen?

I know the stop light cameras in certain parts of The Woodlands / Spring /Houston were due to be removed because they were being used in a "shady" fashion....

I know in our area there were enough accidents and mishaps to make the public question the use of then cameras at the stop lights... speed cameras are a whole nutha animal...
