So the S2000 needed a new battery....

.. So I went to Sears to go get the battery replaced under the prorated warranty. As I was standing in line at the counter I look back outside and a lady backs her Hyundai into the S2000 . She gets out looks at it and says "Did I do that???". She says we should trade insurance info and I said I was calling the cops to get a police report when she said "no cops" I still insisted on calling the police and she said she didn't have her license on her and didn't want to cause her mom who was also in the car any grief and she says "I'm leaving if your calling the police". I told her that wasn't a good idea because I have her license number. Next thing I know she jumps in her car and swerves past traffic in the blind oncoming lane before I could stop her.
I got the first 4 numbers on her plate and called the police. An employee at Sears who was among the many witnesses got a cell phone pic of her driving away with the full plate and me chasing her on foot.
Then several minutes later the lady calls the sears store to give me her insurance info just as the police arrive. The cop gets on the phone (at this point they know who she is, where she lives etc) and tells her she has 10 minutes to come back before they come get her. Well she never comes back. The cop said she will be getting a nice greeting by the police when she gets home and the reason she fled was she had no license, but it was her moms car (who was in the car with her) and it had valid insurance. And this lady was in her 60's, she wasn't a young teenager. The cop said the ironic thing is that she was in a private parking lot and doesn't need a license for that. But since she decided to flee I'm sure she had a great end of the day.

And to top it off Sears was trying to charge me $20 and an hour of my time to test the battery, that just failed an hour earlier at advance auto. After they wouldn't step down I just used an online coupon at advance and bought a battery from them instead. THANK YOU SEARS for the great customer service!

The battle wounds:

The estimate we got so far from a body shop is saying 1k damages assuming there aren't any surprises under the bumper. They said they should be able to repair the bumper and therefore keep mostly original paint.

What should I be looking for in terms of diminished value? This is a mint 2000 S2000 with 75k miles that was purchased brand new off the lot. Understandably it is an older car, but no one wants to buy a wrecked sports car regardless of what the owner tells them when it shows an accident on carfax.

Sorry about the car; accidents stink.

Re: the lady who hit you - word of advice to her: small fender bender in a parking lot, not a big deal; leaving the scene of an accident, BIG DEAL. Nice choice lady.

Some people. I hope she gets what's coming to her.

Realistically, I wouldn't worry about the damage. It's nearly a twelve year old car, and during that time a few mishaps can be expected. You appear to really take care of it, and if I we're a potential buyer I would place more emphasis on care taken including receipts other than a repainted fender and bumper (providing it was done correctly).

Well, this turned out completely different than I had expected.

That really sucks. What a dumb lady. Now she's in deeper

I guess she'll get charged with hit n run.

Looking at the pics, the paint seems a bit faded. I'd be worried if they need to repaint the bumper... it's going to be mismatched. Maybe take it to a professional detailer to see if s/he can't get the paint in better condition first?

That lady was sure a dumb$hit. I mean....you see her license number and she runs....cops know where to find her.....I mean, she is obviously not bright. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Thankfully you didn't get hurt and it looks like an inexpensive repair.

That sucks. I'm amazed that people still think that running from the scene of an accident in the age where everyone has a cell phone is a good idea. Glad they got the bitch.

Thanks everyone. It was one of those things that just catch you in a shock of disbelief. I honestly just sat there for a second after I called 911 and asked my self "did that really just happen?" I have no idea what she was thinking, especially when you are talking to the cop on the phone, I think that should be a sign to give up and come back.
And btw this happened yesterday afternoon and it is my dad's S2k, I was just going to help him out and get his battery replaced while I was home for the weekend. This is my second not at fault fender bender in the last 6 months and none of them were in my own car

Will do. As of now the plan is to get it repaired next week at a local body shop that the Honda dealership uses that I have used in the past and been happy with.

Indeed, sir. Well played, though I am sorry to hear about the damages.

Good luck with the repairs.

Rule #1...

If you are in a n accident and the other party says, " If you call the police I'm leaving."

The appropriate reply is..."well, thats your choice, I can't keep you here"

Just make sure you have all their info and let them leave...then nail them.
