Smoked a Celica

Hey guys. I hope this is the right forum for this. My friends and I went bowling tonight. There were five of us in my car and 4 in the Toyota Celica stickshift. After the bowling, my friend was getting ballsy and started reving at me at a stop light. It was about 2:30AM and the streets were clear so I said why not. Before the light turned green, the f**ker started going so I just drove casually. I will not go through red lights in order to race somebody. My friends are all telling me he won this and that. I am a very calm guy so I'm just relaxed and not saying anything. We get to another light and my friend in the Celica wants to go again. Another friend of mine in my car yells at him not to go through the red light this time. So anyway, I turn VSA off and the light turns green. I hit the gas and my front tires are spinning like crazy, and my passenger is just like wow what the hell. No one was expecting that, it wouldn't stop burning out. Anyway, finally I get some traction and the Celica guy who also lost some tractiong due to his high rpm launch gets traction and we start going. He gets slightly ahead of me for a second or two until i fully gain traction and demolish him. They were all surprised in that car because they thought the stickshift would help him win. So we go again, this time I floor and I am burning out again so I let off the gas until I get traction and floor it. BOOM, I'm gone and then slow down before I reach 60 or so. (the speed limit is about 50 so I didn't want to go unnecessarily fast). When we got to a light he was like, we got four people in here! I replied, I got FIVE people in here! Anyway, it was fun and the TL performed well.

Turning off you VSA really helps.. I know that for a fact. Of course, then you have to control the wheel spin, but that's just learning the best launch method for the conditions at hand. You may have spun the tires more because of all of the extra weight in the car. Try this with just you in there and see what happens.. the car will gain velocity quicker and alone with it.. traction.

Good kill, though. Now go after something more serious.

Merry Christmas/Happy Holiday.

Good race, but even if the Celica was a GT-S (top model), it wouldn't be a problem for the Type-S.

I remember coming home from a friend's place late at night, and these two guys were in a blue Celice GT-S. It was obviously modded, and when I got next to them, the passenger had this shit-eatin' grin on his face looking at me. I was like, "oookkaaaay.... you want to have a go at this?"

I jumped the car a few times while keeping next to him, and he floored it. I followed, and it was over in a matter of a few seconds. Celicas are nothing to fear, stock, mildly- and moderately-modded. If heavily modded, then it would be a problem.

Nonetheless, there are two things to learn from your race -- always turn off computer nannies telling you how to drive, and more importantly, launch wins the race.

Good run, good fun. Nice.

Thanks

I have an autostick. I have this feeling that leaving it in drive is probably as fast as using the autostick without the possibility of doing a late shift or early shift. What do you think about this?

Next time I plan on leaving VSA off, leaving the car in drive, do about half throttle untilt he car starts moving then floor it so it doesnt waste precious time spinning the tires.

That sounds about right. Autostick/sportshift is only useful (to me) when I want to HOLD a gear on twisty roads.

As for me, I smoked a Celica GT-S just after I got my engine upgrades in the '97 TL. That guy wasn't too happy that I left him in a cloud of dust

Great another street racing thread.
I'm sure you are stoked about beating a little 1.8L 4 cylinder engine car with 4 people in it. Yeah, I know you have 5 so that makes it fair then right?
Very mature of you to slow down once you got to 60 and the speed limit was only 50. Cops can/will give you a ticket for excessive display of speed even if you never break the speed limit.
BTW, what year is your car?

even if it wasnt type-s the 04 is slightly more powerful than a 99-03 tl-s.

yeah. i got cocky back when i had my rsx-s. no matter what i did to it i can never keep up with a tl-s. a tl it wasnt too bad, i can still be able to follow it and now lose it. but on turns i definitly kept up. damn my rsx days were fun, but the tl, damn its quick for a "family luxury sedan"

Okay, a V6 vs a 4cyl.

Unless this Celica was severely modded it's kinda like sandblasting a soup cracker.

BUT... you always have to race the driver, not the car. Even a Viper in the hands of a n00b can be taken by a much lesser car.
