I was driving home from work this evening on the interstate in the right lane going about 70. I didn't see it until after the incident, but there was a C6 2 cars ahead of me in the same lane.

It was dusk outside so a bit hard to see, but all of a sudden out of nowhere I see something fairly large in the corner of my eye flying through the air. Second latter, it started falling down towards my hood or windshield.

Luckily I drive a sports car, so I was able to quickly swerve into the breakdown lane and avoid getting hit.

Right after I swerved, I saw the C6 pulling over, and noticed that what I narrowly missed was the top of the Corvette's roof.

I've heard about these incidents, but actually almost getting nailed in by one going 70 is another story. If GM hasn't yet issued a recall, they really should as this isn't safe or something that should happen to a $45+k car.

There was a recall actually.

I remember seeing pics of Shawn S' vette with blue tape on the top until he got it in to get fixed.

So no one got hurt? Lucky...

Yeah.. It was close, but I avoided it and I think it flew off to the side of the road after it fell.

Nice reflex. Sorry if I am too curious but what sports car were you driving?

YUP.... Drove around like this for about 3-weeks waiting for my replacement roof to arrive and get painted.
I couldn't let it sit in the garage in the middle of July.
All better now.

an entire roof falling off? jesus, that's horrible. how badly does GM have to screw up making a car to have the roof fall off?

Well, not the "entire" roof, just the panel covering it. lol.

I'm impressed

Almost correct. An 06 Z Coupe.

It's not as anywhere near as nice as a C6, but it handled the emergency swerve really well at 70mph

Yes, the problem is with the adhesive holding the skin to the frame of the removable piece.
This is what it looks like when it fly’s off at speed.
Notice the frame is still in place.
I noticed mine in time when it started to seperate and taped it down before it flew off the car.

Thats friggin crazy. Their was no way for them to weld tabs and bolt it down? Or is adhesive just cheaper

The frame of the removable roof is magnesium (weight savings) and the skin is 1/16” thick lightweight SMC (Solid Molded Composite) aka plastic.
The entire roof assembly only weights about 24 pounds.
Not too many ways to attach them together seamlessly by welding or using bolts.

Cheap…..YES, but I praise GM for making a 50,000 dollar car that can hang with vehicles from Porsche, Ferrari & Lamborghini that cost 100,000 or more.
