Its still better than nothing. I went and looked at a car and its carfax came up with a salvage title. The guy diffidently did not mention that. The car I did end up buying not only did I carfax it but I brought it to a mechanic to check everything out.

Neither a Carfax or Autocheck will ever replace rubbing the paint and looking for VIN tags. Both can let things slip through the cracks.

When I worked for Acura I had a woman trading in a 02 MDX that she claimed had never been in an accident. She even had a Carfax report from when she bought the car used in 03 or 04. When we ran a Carfax on the car we found it had been in an accident prior to when she purchased it. Apparently the NJ state police started reporting to Carfax after she bought the car so her Carfax from 03 was updated in 06 when she went to trade it in. She got screwed on both ends, she bought a car that was in a major accident without knowing it, then got less for her trade because of an accident that wasn't her fault and she was completely unaware of.
