RWD (Sport) Sedans w/ Manual Transmissions
#164
I was skimming the first 2 pages and wow, people think the G37 sedan looks better than the coupe?
Maybe they don't like the rear, but I think the coupe looks better overall. Then again I'm a coupe kind of guy...
yup.... aside from enthusiasts, I'd imagine very few of the general car buying public is looking for a sporty RWD sedan with a manual transmission.

Used E90 330i
but yeah.... maintenance on Euro brands can get pretty expensive. I'm not sure how exactly picky they are when it comes to tranny/differential fluids but my friend's C230 required 8 quarts of oil, which is 2 quarts more than my engine with twice the cylinders and 2.5x the displacement
when you think about it though, aside from Infiniti, almost everything that's RWD with a manual transmission with a sedan bodystyle is either domestic or Euro. So you either have to get over the badge or the cost to own

Not sporty, not available with a manual transmission (not like I've ever checked, but I'm 99.99% sure) and definitely not RWD.... does look pretty nice though. and in a car like the Avalon, I'm not sure RWD/FWD would matter too much.

The G37 will flat obliterate a 328i on any road course. Find me a lap time where the 328i kept within 3 seconds of a G37 before you run your mouth. That being said, the 335i is my number one car in this segment with the G coming second and the A5 2.0 a distant third (not enough value for money).
Saintor needs to stop drinking the C&D Kool-Aid. If you put a BMW badge on a turd they'd swear it drove better than any thing else.....

Involving to drive > track times.

By that statement it seems as if you are saying the G37 isn't involving to drive. On the contrary, the G is the most involving to drive of any car in its class save the 3-series. But 228 hp compared to 330 hp makes a difference whether you want to admit it or not. The slight advantage the 328i might have in handling is not enough to offset a 100-hp deficit. Thats why I said the ideal car in this class is the 335i (or ultimately your M3, bastard). But to say the G37 isn't as involving as a 328i is just false....
Well i guess i should have said that the 328i is more involving to drive. I am just agreeing with what the editors at Edmunds have said.
Power isnt everything sometimes. Its the feeling you get behind the wheel that counts. You found that in the G37 so enjoy!
Anyways back to the op, my top 3 sedans i wanted when shopping in that price range were the 328i, G37 and G8 Gt. All amazing cars. IMO

Only the IS250 comes with a manual, last I checked.
If only stupid GM didn't overprice the GXP to begin with.... $40k for essentially a Camaro SS in a roomier sedan form. I still want one though, but used. The LS3 is so responsive to bolt-ons its not even funny. 430WHP/420WTQ from bolt-ons and a tune, cam and heads on top of that and you're talking 500WHP N/A. Looking at an LS3 dyno charts gives me wood. Still plenty fast stock too.
Admittedly its not a car for everyone, but I would box Kimbo Slice if you handed me the keys and the pink slip to a white GXP regardless of outcome

Which oddly enough is a tough choice for me. Pontiac has the better interior quality and handling but the Dodge has the looks, sound, and I don't know ....it just "grabs" me somehow.

Its just considering that the Camaro SS starts right around $30k for essentially a very similar car, it was sorta good timing in a way that the 5th gen Camaro didn't come out at the same time as the GXP. The G8 GT also only started at around $30k, sans Brembo brakes and LS3 and 6MT. Pretty sure that Aussie currency is worth more than the dollar, which would explain part of it.
But you're right, compared to a 550i which is $70k a GXP outclasses it in performance for almost 1/2 the price, but hey, its like the story of the new 5.0 vs. an M3. You're not gonna get the driving dynamics of BMW or the great combo of ride comfort along with the performance (though I doubt the GXP is a back breaker by any means) but you'll have a sizable chunk to put towards a down payment on a house if you go with the cheaper choice.
I like the Charger SRT8. They respond to bolt-ons really well... there's a 300C SRT8 around here with a cam and nitrous that surprises a LOT of people. My friend even told me not to mess with him, heh. A shame they didn't come in stick, but that's what the Challenger is for.

Ok after reading everything I can throw something that has not really been said (once I think)
1st gen CTS-V w/manual trans. Look up some used models at autotrader and cars.com and they are pretty cheap with relatively low miles. Now depending on when you buy your car, you are thinking about this year maybe you might be able to find a 2nd gen CTS-V with low miles and under 40k.
I hope that was better than my other answers
And I wouldnt go with pontiac because of resale value.

That's more like it.
I want the 2G CTS-V, if I get a Caddy.
But, I priced out a manual 335i with navi, and it comes out to $43,575 MSRP. I'm pretty sure I can knock at least $2k off of that. It's so close to my $40k budget, that it's tempting me. I'm sure it'll be easier to negotiate at the end of the year, between Christmas and New Years, for an even better deal.

I rode in my boss's 2009 328i and it's exactly what I expected as far as power / ride comfort. Having personally driven and riden in both a AT / MT 3G TL-S, the TL-S would absolutely shit on the 328i.
Acceleration: TL-S > 328i
Top End: TL-S > 328i
Handling: Could go either way, the TL-S isn't exactly a slouch in the corners.
Brakes: TL-S > 328i
Given your price range, the 335i seems to be the only car that meets your criteria that's in your price range for BMW. That's however if you aren't looking for old M3s, E39 540s / M5s .
I would look into a low mileage 1G CTS-V, powergains and the vast aftermarket makes it look real good.
