Gav from the sound of it seems like the 335i is going to be pretty sweet. It's as fast as the e46 M3. In automobile mag a dyno test showed 275hp and 300lb ft. at the wheels. So that's like 350hp 360lb ft at the crank.

I did not drive an SMG. I drove the manual tranny M3.

You can test drive an M3 in Toronto. I think drtoth is from out West. Personally, I think that idea is dumb of not being able to test drive a car. If you're serious enough, at least they can see if you know how to drive a manual and go with you so you don't beat on the tranny.
335 is the way you're headed? Be sure to post pics when you pick her up!

Ok, to bring this thread out of the grave, any updates? Esp. now that the new 335 is out and ready to be test driven. Are you still looking for a new car gav? Just thought I'd ask now that it's been almost 2 months.

I'd like to see gav's thoughts on the 335i too and how he compares it to the C6. I know they are very different cars, but like gav, I have also been cross-shopping all types of cars that are just attractive to me, whether or not they are in the same class. One big difference though is that my self-imposed budget is $50K tops and I'd prefer to be around $45K.
I was sold on the vette up until I drove the 335i. Of course, the torque of the vette's V8 is practically unbeatable in this price range, but I really enjoyed my time behind the wheel of the 335i. It pulls nicely all through its power band and just feels very solid and precise. I will not be tracking or racing the car, but just enjoy having that power on top for occassional spirited driving. This is why I am leaning towards the 335 now, I just feel it is more balanced as a daily driver. Especially considering that if I go with the vette I'd go with the 2LT model which is basically a base model with no upgraded audio, navi, or any other cool gadegets. I simply don't feel that the extra $5k needed to get the fully loaded model are worth it considering that the Bose radio sucks, the navi isn't anything special, and that I probably would not have much use for the memory seats in a 2 seater. I would rather spend less down the road and get a better aftermarket audio system with in-dash DVD player and navi. The only thing that sucks about the 2LT package is that you can't get the heads-up display with it, but I've lived without it until now so it's not a necessity. Also in favor of the 335 at this point are the rear seats. I have never really needed them, but they have come in handy lately in the CL-S and I think they will see more use in my next car.
The only V8 I have considered is the C6 because I have always wanted a vette. Other than that they are all 6 cylinder models even if a V8 is available. I am also giving thought to a GS350 because of the Lexus quality, but it's just a different driving experience from the other cars I'm looking at. Not in a bad way, it's just much more refined as opposed to sporty. You don't feel the roughness of the road in that car and it has a very nice ride. But it is very uninvolved compared to the BMW, great for long rides/commutes, but jut not as fun to drive. I ruled out the M35 because I just didn't like the interior for some reason. Maybe it was the fact that I was comparing it to the GS's, which I feel is more upscale.
I did see the new TL Type-S at the South Florida International Auto Show and was very impressed with what I saw, but I haven't had the chance to test drive it yet. I love the red lighting in the interior. But I can't help remembering the time I got a TL as a loaner and felt like I was driving my mom's car for some reason. I just didn't like the feel of it, it felt bigger than it is and the four doors are a turn-off. I did love the interior though, I think Acura's have some of the best designed interiors ever, including the CL-S, but I would really like to move on to some other make.
I would like to see and drive the new G3X coupe and Audi's TT, but the G35 won't be out for a couple months and I want to have my new car within the next 3 months and the Audi will probably not be as fun to drive around town as the 335 because I'm a big fan of low- and mid-range power.
