Sorry about the ticket, but it is worth 50 bucks to have a photo of your car in midtown NYC.

^ second time in 4 years its happend to me... first time... right near a popular acuraziner... thats right rodney on 167 and grand concourse

I said it was worth $50 to see my slammed civic... but in the tl... I dunno $50 is gas money right there

PS. that is actually in uptown manhattan, in midtown those cameras would fail... way too many cars 5 cars take the red maybe 1 of the 5 gets caugh

that is not to say on route 9 (west side highway)... 56th street there is a camera...

But you can always look at sites like this: http://www.photoenforced.com/ny.html

nope dude, you live in NYC... they are LED lights now... it goes from yellow to red extremely quick
although for some reason when it is red it blinks just before it is going to turn green lol

Yeah, he did gun it just a little

But luckily those tickets have no points, and they are only $50.

And you can't fight them. I remeber, it was winter, black ice everywhere, I did a 360 thru the intersection, still got the ticket, and I had to pay it.

I got a Red Light Ticket last year. I don't make a practice of pushing yellows and was shocked when I got a ticket like yours.

I wound up fighting it and actually won. My case was simple: the yellow light interval was one second shorter than other lights (that were not camera enforced) were. I surveyed 4 other lights in my area and it was pretty clear that the 'enforced' intersection had a narrower yellow interval. Do a google search and you might find more information on how to fight this. Cities are making a fortune on RLC tickets.

We might not be a big ol' city like New York, but we have LED lights, too...so I'm not buying your flimsy excuse. And regardless of how fast they change, you were behind the stop line, which looks to be a good five feet behind the crosswalk, when the light was red. So combine being that far back (and even further back when it was yellow) with knowing the lights change quickly, and the logical answer is to stop.

^ It's true, but sometimes it is safer to run the light.... let me explain, they love to tail gate here at high speeds, so if you are going 30 mph, and the light suddenly switches...if you jam on your brakes, you will form a limo.

Al, if you really must go around a red light, be in the right lane, pull the car towards the right in the intersection as you are making a right turn, then cut back in. Cameras do not catch this, and if they do, no picture of the license plate. This is a common practice by cops.

How about slowing down and not driving like an asshat jackass so much??!

Well, at least you're not running red lights anywhere within 1000 miles of me, where each ticket is $300+.

There are no cars behind him so, no it wouldn't be safer in this instance and you're advice doesn't seem to safe or smart

Granted...but that wasn't the case here.

I know...and I'm just giving you a hard time about running the light. Personally, I hate these cameras and am glad they, along with the speed cameras, were found to be illegal here. Our legislature could amend the constitution to make them legal, but they haven't for the last couple of years. Guess most people didn't like the cameras.

I have so many issues with this.

You basically told him how to continue running lights and possibly cause an accident since he has to get very close to the pedestrian cross walk for this to work well.

And on top of that what you said about people tailgating you is mostly crap. I drove in NYC for 10+ years. In Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. And you usually know when the lights will change if you look at the pattern and the Walk / Don't Walk signs. And if you don't slow down when you see that the light is going to change then your intent was to run the light. No part of it was influenced by the driver behind you.

Dude, I'm always worried about RLCs, everytime I'm in NY the light turns yellow and then red almost instantly.

I just want to ask how long does it usually take for them to send you a letter in the mail about your infraction?

I see since you posted this today and on the picture it says July 30,2008, I'm going to guess it takes 2 months to process.

NY in general is so money hungry, they'll do whatever they can to get even a few dollars out of drivers. For instance they reduced the maximum amount of time you can get on the parking meters to 45mins in some parts of Queens, instead of 2hours, that way they can get the meter maids to ticket you more often.

A few years ago I was in Queens and pulled over to ask someone for directions , I was stationary for barely 5 seconds, two weeks later I got a love letter from NY DOT asking for $150 for parking violation stating that I was in a no stopping spot

I just thought it was funny you could tell in the picture that there is only one. I saw the picture and thought that car looked familiar

I don't think anyone getting broad-sided by a red light runner would find the 'gee its only 50 bucks and I get my photos posted on the web' statement very amusing. Having been hit by a red light runner a long time ago and getting a ticket with a RLC (that I fought and won) gives me a strange perspective possibly. It was funny for a time seeing the video of my car ripping through a left turn at 40+ MPH but it was also very dumb for me doing this stunt with my family in the car so I'm not especially proud of it in retrospect.

My ticket definitely changed my attitude towards yellows and yes I will generally stop at intersections with a yellow on for a second or more. The yellow interval is programmed based on lots of parameters: speed limit, grade of road, lanes, straight .vs. left, etc so it's very possible to have a narrow yellow light and still be to spec based on DOT recommendations. I was lucky that my RLC time was a split .25 second- I was out of that intersection long before opposing traffic got their green.

I always assumed that once your front axle was past the limit line during the yellow I was good to go- at least in CA its you REAR axle. In CA its $300 and points so getting a RLC ticket is no casual thing. Good luck in New York - might explain possibly why the car insurance is so high: cheap tickets, & no points must mean there are lots of offenders to pop.

Fight the power. I've been guilty of running a red light camera once. Never again.
