Radar detector?

Hey guys, I was thinking about getting a radar detector for my car.... I am wondering if anyone here can recommend a particular brand/ specific detector? I was thinking about getting a cobra XRS-9700. Let me know if anyone has a better idea in the line or radar detectors. Thanks

check out my tread about my Bel...

The 2 I looked at is the Escort 8500 and of course, the Valentine. Did some research on those 2 and wound up buying the Escort from Crutchfield.

well, I read the reviews and though the V1 is very well rated, it did say that it goes off constantly from false readings.... So I went with the Escort (red display is only $304 but I splurged and got the blue display at $344).

I looked at Ebay and decided not to try to save $50 as those do not come with warranty and I just did not want any hassles. Crutchfield had decent prices and free shipping and I know they will back their products.

V1 ftw.

However, I heard that the CHP uses laser for detection, and isn't the V1 only minimally or marginally effective against such systems? (Correct me if I'm wrong) If such is the case, wouldn't the V1 be near worthless?

AFAIK, all laser detectors are worthless. Once you pick up the laser sig, you are caught.

V1 is the best overall though. I have the Escort Solo S2.

Yep. I know this from personal experience.

I have the V1. Very impressed with it (other than when I got caught by a laser gun, but there is nothing you can do about it...).

with me, I like running my radar even though I usually do not speed. I have had occasions where the Police car was coming at me and my radar goes ape shit. Nice to know. Or sometimes, it is just nice to know there is a Police radar in the vicinity.

It is never fool proof but my Bel saved me from at least 2 tickets. So for me, it is worth it.
I got cocky once and did not plug it in. Got nailed in a friggin 15 mph zone when I thought it was a 30.

I was planning on borrowing my friends V1 for my last road trip to FL a few weeks back. Unfortunately his brother took it with him to europe on vacation, so I got stuck. I tried to get the Bel RX65 as per the recommendation of a few people here, couldn't find it anywhere. I ended up borrowing the Bel 995 from a friend who's an electronics wholesaler and gave it back to him when I returned from my trip. It was pretty good overall, although for some reason it did not pick up any police at all in Georgia. The cops were in plain site too. It had me all confused. For the most part it did it's job though....I still think the V1 woulda been better.

The cops it didn't pick up were probably shooting laser. The detector would only go off if they shot your car directly, or if it picked up a reflection. I pass cops pretty often that are obviously speed traps and get no signal.

For a while, I had a chance to run an Escort 8500 and a v1.8 Valentine1 together.

While the Escort was still very good, the V1 definitely warned earlier and the biggest selling point was the arrows. With the Escort, I had to look all around, front, left, right, back to see where the cop was. Kind of ticked me off.

I've been clocked by laser 3 times since I've gotten the V1. All 3 times, I would've been totally fucked if I were speeding. There was just no time to react.

However, my friend just installed a laser deflector along with the V1 on his S4, and he trusts it... Apparently a friend of his (not like a friend's roommate's cousin's brother's friend) actually tested out with a laser gun and it was very effective. I'm considering getting that, too.

I have been using the Solo 2 for the past two years. The mags and forums seldom say anything good about cordless models but I have really liked it a lot-has never failed me yet.

I had to go cordless. . . I have a Solo S2. I'm very happy with, and battery life is surprisingly long. Over the last 2 years, it's saved me from a good 4 or 5 tickets.
