question about actual law on db levels... and a little racial profiling
this morning on the way to work, i had to get gas. so at 4:30am im driving down san carlos(for those not of the area, a not so good part of town). and i get pulled over, of course. cop chp tells me my car is screaming to get pulled over. mentions the tint and exhaust.
he checks my record, clean of course, and lets me go ticket free... definitely not the first time this has happened... cause im white? who knows.
anyways, before he walks away i mention the printout i have from tanabe stating that the exhaust has been tested, and is below the legel db limit at all rpms. he says it doesnt matter, any modification to the system that raises it even 1db is illegal. i thought he was full of shit, but since he already let me go i wasnt going to argue.
so, for those that know for certain. what is the specific law on this?

I dont know the db level law but around here in VA any exhaust modification to the factory exhaust is illegal. My buddy got pulled over in his Prelude with the Apexi WS2 on it which is a pretty quiet system and that's the explanation that was given.

i'm pretty sure there is an actualy decibel limit that your car can't go pass
a lot of cars now a days have aftermarket exhaust like all those truck guys who have magnaflows and what not and they'll never get pulled over for it cause their fords were loud from the beginning
if i ever got a ticket for it i'd be sure to fight it.

yea thats rediculous, one can drive a harley and wake up the whole F'n neighborhood, but raise the volume of your car stereo and see how fast you get pulled over!!! thats wack plain and simple.
oh and dont tint your windows too dark cause you'll be ticketed for that!
but you can drive your f150 all over town with tinted back window as long as its tinted with an american flag or bald eagle or hunting scenery!!!lol

Not to hijack, but anyone know what these laws are like for us up in Ontario?
I was actually thinking about an aftermarket exhaust, but I definately don't want to be pulled over just because of it.
Anything else that usually gets you pulled over or ticketed for if they search your vehicle? I was actually wondering if a supercharger would cause a ticket...

Don't know why anyone would want a loud exhaust. When I go WOT the engine sounds pretty loud, perhaps even too loud. It attracts unwanted attention like the last time I was tooling around waiting for my chinese food take out order. Some doofus in a Evo starts riding my ass like a ripe dingleberry and I had to shake it off before I could parallel park on the street to pick up my order.

In this area the dB levels vary greatly from town to town and what time of day. There is no right answer to this, though I suspect he had just cause to pull you over for it.
Seriously, there was enough traffic at 4:30 AM to justify getting on it? Tinted windows are always a begging to be pulled over feature in this area, which is why I've never had tinted windows.
I completely agree with who ever made the comment about Harley's, when I asked a cop once, in a friendly setting, why they didn't write tickets because a Harley is louder then 99% of all cars. His reply "because I think that sounds good." Welcome to America

I dont know if you're supposed to or not but my GF had 35% MVA stickers on her front two windows when we lived in MD. However she got em after she had to go there to show the car was in good standing because she had gotten a repair order for darker ones and got it re-tinted. The question is that are your windows the tint shops 35% or the states 35%. There is a difference because when she had those stickers on there people always used to ask if her car had tint on it because the legit 35% is very very light.

sound similar to a situation I had. I was with my buddy in his Z06 and he took off from a light quickly, didn't peel tires or anything like that. He gets pulled over for exhibition of speed.
