Anybody know anything about portable GPS's? I'll be living in Miami next year and would like to have a GPS in case I get lost. Looking for 4.3" or bigger. Also need bluetooth and text to speech. Other than that the most important part to me is good solid directions to my destination that wont throw me in a loop.

 

I just bought the Nuvi 760 and like it alot. Retails for $700 I think, but you can find it for less than $400 online.

 

I have a cheap Garmin Nuvi 200 and I love it. Simple yet effective. I don't need all the bells and whistles b/c the TSX is not our primary car.

Why do you need Bluetooth? If it's for hands-free phone then I suggest not using the GPS to take your calls. The sound fidelity for voice calls suck donkey balls.

Text-to-speech? I've heard non-English names get butchered. Up to you on that one.

I like my wife's Garmin nuvi250 ... but I believe the nuvi260 has the text-to-speech you covet but not sure about the bluetooth. It's a widescreen 4.3" so that should easily be less than $300.

I have the Garmin Nuvi 260w and love it. Nice size screen, and text to speach. I paid $280 for it.

 

Garmin 660, bought it on amazon for ~$290. idk what it is at right now but it fluctuates weekly if not daily. it's brand new and comes with everything.

 

Just pick a Garmin with the features you want and be done with it.

Just bought the Garmin 200w (same deal Ethan got). From all the reviews, it sounds like a great unit for the price. I'll post a review once I get it.

garmin's are just so damn ugly, which bothers me. And why are they all that dull looking silver?

 

the newest models coming out now have different colors, i wish my 660 was all black instead of silver though.

yeah, the bluetooth features on them are crap, you can't hear very good, they can't hear you either... you end up yelling and frustrated.

The whole idea to Text to Speech is so that you keep your eyes on the road and not have to look away in order to look at the screen... TRUST me, you'll still look at the screen... and like derrick said, they can't pronounce street names for shit.

Just get the most basic one with the 4.3 screen

 

tho, I must add... get one with the MOST POIs (Points Of Interest)

 

Nuvi 660 or 680. I have used those as well as the 350 and the 660 and 680 are great.

I just bought a Nuvi 200W. It's great. It's fairly inexpensive, especially compared to some others. I got mine for $215 before tax at wally world. It doesn't call out specific street names...it just says "Turn right" or "Turn left in X number of feet" and then again right before you are on it, so unless you absolutely need it to call street names (which you don't) I think it is great.

It's 4.3 inches too. I recommend it

 

One last request to see a pic of one mounted on a CL please.

 

Garmin NUVI 370 here. Second because the 1st was stolen in my car (broken glass of course). It doesn't get any better than this.

Last May I was in Europe... life was *so much easier*.

Otherwise, entering 20-30 points of interest manually on your GPS is less than fun.

 

Can you explain further? Don't really understand that. I decided on the nuvi200w, had a $70 dell gift card got it for $151

 

IMO all portable GPS's are ugly once they're mounted on windshields or on top of dashboards with wires hanging out of them. Same for portable satellite radio receivers.

That being said, I've had my Garmin Nuvi 350 for a few years now and have been very happy with it. I rarely use it in my own car except for road trips, I have used it in a lot of rental cars.

 

Does anyone use this instead of the windshield mount. I have a radar detector so it'll get in the way.

Hand typing your places/addresses to drive to on the touchsceen can be a pain. Before travelling for example, I would do this for the places I knew I needed/wanted to visit ahead of time.

....and for about $15 you can get a cord that'll hook/power the RD from the rearview mirror.

 

I have to use that mount for my Garmin Ique 3600. It is the palm model, and I love it because it is very portable. I picked it up on sale for about $150.

In MY experience, I used a tom tom in Vegas last month, I didn't like it at all. However, when I borrowed Jizzy's Garmin, I loved it!

 

a little over 2 years ago I got this for my Treo and honestly? I've gotten every pennies worth... I still use it on a daily basis.



last Christmas, I treated myself to a TomTom 920 which... at the time, was the top of the line model (now it's 930), I did return it only because all the newer features to me were simply worthless (half the time, I couldn't understand street names pronunciations, FM transmitter was junk, couldn't hear conversation through bluetooth). Which is why I always advice people to not spend the extra on the little lame features, but just get the basic model that'll get you from point A to point B... in ANY brand.

 

i have that and love it also. i dont like using the suction because it leaves that circle mark on your windshield so thieves can see it and know you have a navi. and sometimes the suction decides not to stick to the windshield.

 

That's my only complaint with the Tom Tom...The mount sucks...
