Please Help, '98 Max broke down & need advice!
Hey all, unfortunately today my 98 Auto Maxima broke down as I was getting off the highway. The car had been sounding different lately & when I stopped at a light, the tranny just seemed to stop working.
Engine & power are fine as is the idling rpm (approx 700).
However, when I put it into drive/reverse, the rpm would fluctuate around 1,000 (normal is 500) & the gas would not work; it was also accompanied by quite a strange clicking sound. I had to have a police car bump me out of the intersection & call a tow truck. Not even the P worked anymore as I had to put the ebrake on.
Anywho the tow company up here is AAA certified & will take a look to see whats wrong. I'm pretty sure it's the tranny. I'm hoping they will do right by me since they said STS (my normal mechanic) isn't the best place to do a tranny job.
To provide a little background history, I just had the front axles changed as well as the belts replaced previously. The check engine light has gone on & off over the course of a few months because I stupidly left the gas cap loose after a fill up. Autozone decoded it & said the one of the O2 sensors has gone bad but since the light went back off I left well enough alone. It's also passed inspection.
Wat do you guys think can be wrong here, the tranny or something else? Do you think me ignoring the check engine light had anything to do with it (it was off at the time of the breakdown). If it is the tranny, what would be a good price to get it fixed. I live on Long Island, NY if anyone has any recommendations.
The car is a 98 GLE Auto with only 64,444 on the odometer so it would be a shame to lose it so young. It's been so good up until this year but money is tight right now since I got laid off from my job.
