Origin of "rice" cars...

Since the term "rice" is used a lot around here, this thread might be of some interest:

http://www.car-forums.com/talk/showthread.php?t=194

...so, if the Japanese want to "rice" up their cars in reference to Americans, do they call it "Burger" it up? (as in McDonald's or Burger King)

One of the best explanations on rice:

http://www.riceboypage.com/what_is_riceboy/

Summary: appearance-based mods to your car to give it the illusion of speed/performance that most people consider to be ugly/tasteless.

The one rice mod that bothers me the most: the fire extinguisher on the A-pillar. Who the hell needs a damn fire extinguisher on their daily driver? The best part is that they're usually on a POS old civic with no performance mods, just a coffee can muffler and a spoiler that looks like something a Klingon from Star Trek would use to kill you with...

I'm done ranting now...

the worst rice mod is that coffee can exhaust

I don't understand why people do that, it just makes the car so loud and obnoxious.

WHY WOULD YOU WANT THAT??

I think its term made up by the "good 'ol boys" that drove muscle cars. They'd see this little econobox built by the japanese and automaically think it was a POS. Typically, most Japanese people are smaller in stature than Americans. I guess the mindset is small people make small, cheap POS cars. And the "almighty" American person is typically much bigger and drives much bigger and much more powerful cars. Also rice is a staple in the Japanese (Asian as a whole) diet. So to sum up the mindset: American = big, strong, powerful - powered by meat and potatoes; Japanese = little, weak, measley - powered by 'rice. IMHO its really a racist based comment. Though I think the context has changed a little over the years. Hope this makes since.

and my car sounds FAR from loud and obnoxious, probably the best sounding exhaust available for imports out there, nice deep and quiet until you step on it. Hell you can't even here it half the time.

Generic mufflers are what sound like crap and I agree w/ you 100%

From what I've been told it's a bikers term. When the Japanese started importing motorcycles into the USA, the Harley riders were calling 'em rice burners. The rest is history...

Don't get your panties all up in a bunch...I'm talking about the kids in crv's that go buzzing around my neighborhood. Sounds like a remote control plane.

And I think they actually have coffee cans on their exhaust systems...literally.

japanese motorcycle = rice rocket
