I've been here EVERY DAY for months now. Of course there was a period of time that I was gone (about 6 or 7 months) but lately I've logged on here at least 3 times a day.
And you know what? I still can't figure out what the fuck you're talking about!
If you have something to say, then say it. Don't beat around the bush or talk in strange phrases.

Ernie, there is just something about you that pisses me off! Congrats dude...I wanna ride in it when you get it. I don't know what the next car I will get will be.... everyone is pushing me toward a G35 coupe 6 speed.
Luckily I have a buddy who is an Infiniti Dealer in San Diego. I already talked to him about buying one.

I don't agree with that at all. I really like the SMG, but the manual trans is so much more satisfying to drive. I never did get used to NOT having a clutch pedal.

that statement was foolish... as i really havent a fucking clue. lol
im going strictly off reading all the white papers BMW released a year or so back on the bmw international site. sounded like the shiznit...
i dunno how watered down the american version is, nor do i know whether or not it lives up to the hype.
i just felt like arguing for the sake of arguing haha. you know how that goes...
but umm... I would still choose SMG just cuz im a lazy bastard. but I would have to drive it first sure.

they tend to do that on options that cost 2K
And tom, are they gonna get rid of the 1st gear skip when the SMG is in auto mode or do they have to keep that for gas guzzling law rules

I still don't think he has a clue what the fuck he is talking about. Apparently nobody else does either.
All I know is that funniest quote of the day goes to Tom2
"is that your wife...? If so, what the fuck is she doing with a dead muskrat on her head?"

The gap remained the same for the quarter mile as well. Which just says that the manual tranny M3 comes out of the hole better, regardless of launch control.
I believe there is a short article in Car and Driver (last months issue) that compares the SMG and manual trans M3. They also got better times in the manual trans car.

Tom, im not hip to all the details of launch control, but doesnt provide every driver a consistent launch?
Whereas a with a manual, you have to be pretty good with the stick to get the perfect launch?
Does the SMG model weigh anymore then the 6spd?

To be honest, I didn't realize that the SMG skipped 1st gear in any of the auto modes. But you're probably right......
The M3 is considered a gas guzzler anyway.......

It provides a consistent launch, but not an IDEAL launch.

BUT... how many people can say they would be able to produce a consistently IDEAL launch on their own with a manual?
not many me thinks.
granted some of you are shift kings... but most arent.
this is probably a bad comparison, but... for instance the S2000, which CAN provide a good launch.... many drivers... especially on the street... cant move that thing for the life of them.

In theory, yes. In reality, no. It depends on the available traction. The SMG computer is supposed to detect wheel spin and slip the clutch accordingly.
The Euro version allows a much harder launch (from what I've read anyway) and actually LIMITS the amount of launches before your car is no longer under warranty. I think it allows 30 launches or so.... But don't hold me to that, because I don't know for sure about the Euro cars.

Have you ever driven an M3? My E36 M3 was very easy to launch, simply because of the characteristics of the drivetrain.
They have excellent traction, even on street tires. The E46 is a little harder to launch, but still pretty easy in my opinion.
If you've ever driven a late model Mustang in a drag race, then you'll know exactly the opposite of an M3. Those cars are 10 times harder to put the power to the ground.
I'd bet that I could beat an SMG M3 with a manual M3 8 out of 10 times.
Does the SMG model weigh anymore then the 6spd?
Yes, but the difference is very small. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I think it's around 50 lbs.

BMW has something called "European delivery". You can order your car at any BMW dealer in the states and fly to Germany to take delivery of it at the factory.
They give you German plates and insurance, and you can drive all over Europe and the Autobahn and then have it shipped to your local BMW dealership.
Pretty cool and BMW gives you a price break too, to make up for having to pay airfare/accomodations in Germany.
Plus, you get to keep your German plates

OMG! they limit the amount of warranteed launches?!?!
thats nuts.
but yes... I too have read the Euro version has a much better launch system.
and no... I have not had a chance to launch a M3. I dont know how easy they are to drive.
If its anything like other BMWs I cannot imagine it is easy to launch... the one thing I HATE about 325s and 330s is the clutch travel. Fucking thing is like driving a truck...
The way the clutch behaves is identical to a Honda Passport, aka, Isuzu Rodeo I once had.
I prefer the feel of short travel short shifting trannies like the RSX for instance. That is one car I am confident I would be able to launch properly on a consistent basis.

Most S2000 owners aren't willing to do that to their cars though....

It was NOTHING like the clutch in the M3. The 328 clutch engages at nearly the top of the pedal travel. In my opinion, that makes for shitty stop and go driving.
But to race it, I could get used to it after a few runs and do well with it. The suspension on the 3 series is just a sweet set up.

yea, the car basically requires a 6500 DUMP to get going

yea your right. you do learn what to do in your car over time...
and like I said, S2k is bad comparison.
I never drove new M3 so I dont know what it feels like down low... I just knew it has high RPM and assume that meant ya might need to dump it high.
I really havent a clue... as i said before. heh
Oh, and good to hear the M3 tranny feels diff from 3-series.
I knew that the M5 has a diff feeling tranny then the 5-series. The 5-series regularly gets complaints and the M5 is supposedly the dream tranny...
I thought I had heard the opposite of the M3...... apparently not.
